The Fall did this a lot. Off the top of my head:

    Jawbone and the air rifle

    New face in Hell

    Spectre vs Rector

    Athlete Cured

    Impression of J Temperance

    I'm into CB

My fave group ever but I appreciate they're not to everyone's taste. Give one a try if you're not familiar anyway. Lyric sheet might help, "Annotated Fall" website is your friend.

The Streets - A Grand don't come for free.

As it says in the title of the album, a young Mike Skinner loses a grand and this album goes through various scenario's as to where it may have gone.

Skinner is a fantastic storyteller and the way this album blends all into one is fantastic, from misfortunes with the ladies (dry your eyes), to boozy nights out before the days of social media (fit but you know it), Finishing with the epic 'Empty Cans', its an album that i'll never get sick off, which is surprizing as I wouldnt be big on any sort of British Rap/RnB - give it a listen!

Don't stop me now - doesn't really tell a story but apparently he wrote it about a massive cocaine fuelled sex party in Brazil, when you know the story it tells a story!

Weak Become Heroes by The Streets is the ultimate story of a good night out on the class A's and fits the criteria for this thread, can't believe I didn't think of it.A really underrated band in my opinion.

Somebody already beat me to The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The OP mentioned Billy Joel but didn't mention Scenes from an Italian restaurant which is like the basis for an 80s movie.. An English Lady of a Certain Age by Divine Comedy is also a great story song.

The story of my secondary school experience, and wheatus added the happy ending.

The Boys are Back in Town by Thin Lizzy. Maybe doesn't tell a story, but there has to be some kind of a back story to that song.

    Camouflage - Stan Ridgway

    The Partisan, Leonard Cohen

A lot of Josh Ritter is good story actually. "The Curse" and "Story of Adam" jump to mind.

A lot of earlier Tom Waits too. Burma Shave springs to mind right away as a story of a guy picking up a girl hitchiker and neither of them really have a destination other than to die. Hell of a song.

Story telling wise I think their song "Babies" strikes me more than Common People. Not sure why.
