I would have no issue so whatsoever with AC Milan playing the Italian anthem if a sitting dignitary or head of State in Italy passed away. You would have to look at every case on it’s merits. Anyway, will say no more, we probably aren’t going to fully agree!

  • Registered Users Posts: 201 ✭✭WillmaDickfit

I'm not overly bothered that Celtic displayed the banner or that Rangers sang the anthem, actually I'm not bothered at all , why should we be. I couldn't give a s**t what head of state in whatever country dies or what the clubs from that country do or don't do (apart from Ireland) , At the end of the day Celtic and Rangers are 2 British clubs and done what they done, move on

Bayern have been brilliant this half. Poor Plzen can't live with them.

Impecable minutes silence at Anfield in fairness.

Indonesia football disaster at the weekend.

Trent can be spoken of in a positive light again - cracker of a free kick.

Nunez is very wasteful in front of goal....

Good strike by Calhanoglu to give Inter the lead against Barca.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,111 ✭✭✭✭Quazzie

    Extraordinary scenes in Porto.

Porto score on a counter attack, only for Anthony Taylor to go to the VAR screen, and give a penalty to Leverkusen before the counter attack. Then the Porto keeper saves the penalty.

Lovely symmetry in Group A right now!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Inter got fortunate there. Onana flapped at a cross and Pedri put it in the net, but VAR showed Onana had palmed it slightly on to Fati's hand so the goal is chalked off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,128 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

You just knew that Atleti penalty wasn't going in.

Some start to the tournament for Brugge.

I'm speechless that isnt a peno for Barcelona

How the hell didnt var pick that handball up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Surprised the ref wasn't at least asked to look at that. Looked a handball from Dumfries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,128 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Memories of 2010 here in the Inter Barca game.

    Looked different from every angle.

Needs to be "clear and obvious" as they say.

Barca v Inter really is very nicely set up. Would be fantastic to see Barca not getting out of the group.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Big win for Inter. Barca won't be happy with some of the decisions. Sets things up nicely for the game at the Camp Nou. Skriniar and Bastoni gave Lewandowski very little.

Just saw Napoli's result at Ajax. Great night for Italian football.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,128 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Napoli must be the form team anywhere in Europe right now.

    Boring Italian football!!

Crazy how Anfield can bring such a big atmosphere to a group stage game against Rangers but barely a whisper for league games like against Brighton.

Chalk and cheese, European nights are just a different beast.

I still don't think this group is over, Ajax still to play Rangers, and Liverpool at home

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,128 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I've seen Liverpool bring an atmosphere to an away League Cup tie in Selhurst so I wouldn't be criticizing them too much.

Certainly in the higher end of fans for atmosphere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,366 ✭✭✭✭8-10

True but most teams' travelling support bring the noise as its a small group who go to all games. Home support is different and Anfield really ups it's game for the European games but recently League games seem flat.

Anyway, off topic, good thing is that there were no new injuries last night. Rangers I though were VERY poor. No ideas, poor in possession, not even trying that hard to win the ball back. I really hope we see the same Rangers performance next week!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,128 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Fans certainly do up it for the Champions League alright.

Can't wait to see the return Milan v Chelsea match. Milan fans really making the most of being back.

Sure they were hardly going to boo that. The Rangers fans laminated a load of copies of the Sun's infamous front page after Hillsborough and distributed them around Liverpool a real bunch of charmers they are!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 33,250 CMod ✭✭✭✭ShamoBuc

And several thousand came down for a session too. Most away sections will have some sort of neanderthal element. To be fair, they sung all the way through and will create a Savage atmosphere next week. I expect a much tougher game then as they will certainly not stand off any team at home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,366 ✭✭✭✭8-10

They'll have to be a lot tougher. They were abysmal last night I thought. This is a team that were incredibly close to being Pot 1 seeds for this group remember only losing the Europa League final on penalties. And last night wasn't a million miles away from being the UEFA Super Cup with Liverpool being beaten CL finalists.

Not sure if it says more about the gulf in class between the English and Scottish divisions or the gulf between the Europa League and the big boy competition but they really have to make serious changes before the return fixture. Liverpool aren't travelling well this season so it's there for them but they need a massive improvement in performance I feel

  • Registered Users Posts: 216 ✭✭BobDole22

Yeah they'll create an atmosphere alright but it won't help the team much Napoli won handy there already and I'd fully expect Liverpool to do the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

Agreed. The gulf in quality between the SPL and the CL is massive. Any bit of pressing and Rangers will crack. If Nunez wasn't so obsessed with hitting the target, Liverpool could have had 5 last night. He hit everything straight down McGregor's throat. He will be more relaxed away from Anfield and should score at least one goal at Ibrox.

Comical by Celtic. VAR saved them from going 2-1 down, less than a minute later, Hart gifts away a goal...2-1

Spl teams struggling badly in the CL groups.

    Haalands 18th of the season

If Haaland gets another he has 4 hat-tricks in a row. Crazy. (Actually won't be in a row now that I think of it.)

Benfica equalise thanks to a Danilo O.G.

Milan should be level. Super run from Leao.

Sad to see the Ajax result. Back to the way it was before that generation of youngsters came through. Missed the boat against Spurs when they should of won the competition, and were ridiculously unlucky against Benfica last year. Torn apart now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,050 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

They don't have to sell off all their talent.

Not sure why they don't try to hold on to the spine of the team when they get a good batch of players, rather than cashing in at every opportunity.

Its not like they are a small club.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,614 ✭✭✭The Golden Miller

They're tight, thinking they're shrewd, like a lot of selling clubs. Arrogant to the point they think they'll replace anyone who leaves, with even better players. And so the conveyor belt goes on. Although they're better positioned than most to replace anyone with better talent on a whim. They just went too far

  • Registered Users Posts: 216 ✭✭BobDole22

The players all want to leave though look at Antony 100 mil from Man Utd probably getting 5x what he was on at Ajax of course he's gonna leave.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,614 ✭✭✭The Golden Miller

Ajax should have the money in abundance at this stage to give higher wages. They refuse, and in fairness they're right, as no player is worth extortionate wages. But with Ajax it really stems from the cocksure belief the next academy player is better than the last

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

    Maccaibi Haifa deservedly leading Juve.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,179 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

I don't know what took the referee so long viewing the monitor to correctly rule out that Man City goal.
