Well, assuming you got a single €50 prize, then you've underestimated the return by a factor of 100.

€50/40,000 = 0.125% (or 0.00125 if you want to express it as a fraction instead of a percentage). It's still not great, but you did better than I did with €25k for nearly 12 months last year.

As an aside: I have to say the usual trolls are very quite this year with their "I invested €5 in <<latest fad>> and I'm now a billionaire, why are you too stupid to do the same"

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,357 ✭✭✭AyeGer

Yeah it’s 0.0125% long time since I did maths 😂😂

    Still a crap return

    Congratulations!

Your saved Prize Bond numbers have won €100.00 since you last logged in.

The number of €50 prizes in the October draws is 4,642 up from 4,625 in September. The newest bond to win on 02 September was BBK 637783, newest 07 October BBU 604655. Sales of around €62 million. Sales that high and only 17 extra prizes, might indicate that a lot of bonds were cashed in.

    2x €50 in sept on €170k-9x €50 in 2022.

Can you explain what was that about? ("cock-up in the prize allocation algorithms introduced in Jan 2021")

I know someone who started with 500 euro in early 80s working up to around 1500 now

They have won just under 2k in various amounts Is that usual

The first 1250 was won when they had 500 investment

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,021 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

I'm taking that to be IR£500. Back in the early 80's interest rates were very high, e.g. Savings Certificates 61% over 5 years. Everything is possible with Prize Bonds, but I think they must have won some big prize to get that return?

Nothing here again today. A long dry spell. Going to give it 1 more week before I cash in half. Seems to be some buying opportunities in iseq at the moment. Hopefully ntma will increase percentage paid out weekly in the meantime.

I complained about the new bonds. Result - no win since!

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,021 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Nothing for me. The €50K went to a 2018 bond ALI 569122.

Hey all, I have money put aside as savings for a deposit. With work changes/etc, we won't be in a position to buy until at least early 2023. I was thinking of taking €10k from savings (just in a deposit account doing nothing at the moment) and putting it into prize bonds. My view is that it's better sitting somewhere with a chance of earning something rather than earning nothing. From what I can tell, the only caveats I need to be aware of is that your initial deposit must stay for at least 90 days, and it can take ~1 week to withdraw. Is this right?

I can't think of any other options that would allow me a chance to accrue some interest that is nice and secure and easy/quick to get the money back - is this correct assumption?

Edit: Oh, one other question - if you win, do you get the money back in cash or as additional prize bonds? Do you get notified or do you need to track yourself?

    Thanks in advance.

If you provide details of a Bank Account Prizes will be put there, otherwise new prize bonds will be issued.

You will get a notification of any win through the post but usually not till at least Wednesday of the following week, you can check for any winners on the website from the day of the draw.

It's crazy they don't just email to notify you you've won, it must cost them a fortune on postage.

They do email (if you set up online account) and send you via post.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,021 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

For some reason, even though one of the items listed in Operational Statistics (Page 23) is Printing, Postage and Stationery, there is no figure given for the cost. The postage for the number of prizes paid would be around €285,000.

Why on earth do people 'invest' in these yokes.

It's just a scam to pay lower yields to people with a propensity for gambling.

I remember them good days, the 10th issue of saving certs, it was the highest ever, 61% over 5 years, I invested IR15,000 in the early 1990s and it was worth IR21,000 after 5 years, when I cashed in the return I invested IR3,000 in Eircom shares which was a total waste, but at least my eggs were not all in 1 basket, we'll never see interest rates like that again and probably a good thing for the economy but bad for saving.

Anyway nothing for me this week.
