Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Where the car industry has really pulled the wool over people's eyes is with the enforced upgrade cycle. They'll make a car for a certain few years, discontinue, come out with slightly different incompatible model. They gatekeep the maintenance through proprietary software, planned obsolescence, poor design and witholding/discontinuing replacement parts.

You could buy a 1960's cessna or a 1980s boat and use it away grand but you'd have to be a fairly dedicated hobbyist to keep a car from the same era going.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,399 ✭✭✭McGrath5

Actually yeah the motor industry is another one that pulls the wool over both government's and consumer eyes. Cars are insanely expensive to run from a personal and societal view. Here is a good video that explains it in depth

Modern vacuum cleaners. The hair detangling thing is a great idea, but a laser so you can see invisible dust? An electronic display showing exactly how much gack was collected? All perfectly good reasons to price a Hoover at 800 quid of course.

I have a happy little fifty quid Henry and he has been perfectly hoovery and reliable for six years. I can live without knowing how many ounces of skinflakes he sucked up.

Go screw yourself, you can go live-in the inner city flats cos you love them so much.

You don't get to tell somebody who doesn't agree with you where to live. Cheeky bugger.

Another champage socialist I bet . Always lecturing others. ’We the great Oirish people, we are so generous with other people's money , with our 92 rooms in the Phoenix Park but none for you’. Life of the party 🥳

You don't represent Irish people, you are conceited and arrogant and you are just some header on Boards lol.

This is what I don't get. There's a lack of GPs and Consultants but these GPs and Consultants are absolutely minting it. Some don't even work evenings or weekends unlike other countries. They will take long breaks at Xmas etc.

I guess they have set up so many barriers to entry to keep their numbers limited and fees high .

The system of having to go through a GP to get an appointment with a consultant is legal corruption in my book, it's mostly a massive waste of time. Most patients will have a general idea of the issue already. Yes it's a skin problem, yes your back hurts , yes you have breathing issues, no we can't do anything for you here, we will write you a letter and charge you 50 quid.

In other countries I have lived in you can book an appointment with the hospital departments directly if you want. You can drop into different GPs and hospitals to get the best service.

Because it's part of a universal health system you are their valued customer and private and public hospitals are happy to see you, they both make money from treating you.

And the fee is fixed as long as it is through the universal public health system . GP visit 7 Euro, Hospital appointment 15 Euro. Meds...FREE.

Yeah it's hard to adjust to the absolute rip off and shambles that is the Irish Health Service , where even a private appointment could have you waiting months. A public appointment could be years later!!

its an interesting one at the moment because energy companies are claiming they are only hiking prices because wholesale prices are rising. yet they they make four times the profit in 6 months they did in the whole previous year. something stinks. then other companies fail like panda.

    Civil Servants and Public "Workers".

The vast majority do the minimum amount possible with no requirement to perform, and still get guaranteed jobs and golden pensions and non-merit pay raises.

All this while providing mostly worthless services to their customers.

Dont believe me?..try contacting the RTBand see what level of service you get.

And it's not just since the energy crisis.

What must the real price of a unit of electricity be ?

You have multiple companies willing to sell you that unit.

But each and every one of them have their own overheads like any other retail, marketing, call center, IT, legal, HR etc.

So how much is added on to the wholesale price of a unit of electricity to allow all these competing companies to pay for the above and also make a margin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,262 ✭✭✭Ubbquittious

The privatised electricity market and MPRN-switching scene is just an artificially created playground for capitalism really. A source of cushy office jobs for those involved but the dirty work of actually generating power, building infrastructure is optional. Pretend you are getting certified organic green renewable electrons pumped to your house when actually you'll be left in the dark if Moneypoint goes down

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,622 ✭✭✭maninasia

The whole annual switching thing they promote in Ireland for these markets is silly when only a couple of suppliers control the infrastructure e.g. energy, broadband, healthcare plans, car insurance.

I thought about this and couldn't really come up with an industry that DOESN'T have a laugh at its customers' or taxpayers' expense. We live in a world full of morkeshing bullsh*t - however much of this can be ignored/avoided if a person has some sense.

After some consideration I think the worst are those that receive state funding to provide goods or services that (vulnerable) people NEED and still provide a shocking service. Step up, Homecare agencies who are engaged by the useless HSE. Truly disgraceful stuff as described in the below thread.

You haven't heard of the 'quiet quitting' trend pervasive across all industries then? You clearly haven't heard about the current working conditions in the public service either.

It's a bit difficult to just the level of service of any public body, until you also look at the level of funding they get and the level of demand for their services. Maybe if landlords stopped expecting the RTB to be their own personal legal advisors, maybe then they might have more time to do their jobs?

People who break the law and cause distress to other. I know its not officially and industry, but people convicted of crimes ate laughing at us, the gardaí and the victims of the crime.

See this guy, caused series distressed to cabin crew & passengers during a flight to Dublin, plus broke aviation laws. 2 months suspended, no fine, no charity donatiin, zero compensation to the victims or airline. And I bet he got free legal aid. He claims he has a business, then make him pay €10k or 100k, hit him where it hurts the most.

Big laugh at the expense of the passengers, crew, the airline, airport staff and airport police.

The 'soft' drinks industry, especially Coca-Cola is having the biggest laugh at consumers.

Their flavoured, fizzy water is one of the biggest contributors to global obesity yet they are sponsors of many sporting events and teams, including Fifa and the Olympics, two of the worlds largest sporting organisations. There has to be corruption at the highest level for them to have such influence.

Then they have a Global Human Rights policy about inclusion and their employees rights to have collective bargaining but then they recently threatened employees here in Ireland with their jobs after years of bullying and intimidation from senior management.

This was their UPDATED Human Rights Policy after been fined $192m for racial discrimination against their African-American employees in the United States.

If you go into any public house or hotel bar now in this country, you can have a wide range of options if your preference is a beer, ale and even now a stout, but if you want a soft drink or mixer your options are usually down to just Coca-Cola products of which Schweppes is also one of their brands.

Then they tried to sell 'pure spring water' in Europe when they were taking water from the Thames river in the U.K. I'd assume that their brand here, River Rock, isn't exactly pure spring water either.

As if all this wasn't bad enough, they have now wormed their way in to trying to dupe the World in to believing that they are trying to be a leader in climate change and Egypt, the host for COP27 UN Climate Change Conference has announced this horrible company as its major sponsor.

This to me is like getting the KKK to be a major sponsor of the Black Lives Matter movement.

They really are having a laugh at the Global consumer.

I'll see your overpriced hoovers and raise you American style fridge freezers with a tablet built into the door. Why? Do people not have enough electrical devices already. I just see it as something else to go wrong with the appliance. I mean what do they actually even do? Now if it locked me out of the fridge to stop me picking at food when I'm bored or shouted 'step away from the fridge chubster' when I opened the door, then it might be worth it. 😂

Thank you for reminding me. This has to be up there for taking the piss award:

The anti hayfever medication Beconase has Beclometasone as the active ingredient. This is patent expired so is available as a generic.

Beconase is available over the counter, you do not need a prescription, but if you want the generic Beclometasone, you can only get that with a prescription, which means a chemist would charge a dispensing fee, so while the Beclometasone might only cost €5, add a €7 dispensing fee and your cheap generic comes in at the same price as - you guessed it - Beconase - except for the privilege of not being able to buy the generic cheaper, you first have to get a prescription for €50-60.

Rip-of Ireland at it's best. You can buy generic Beclometasone in the UK, over the counter, for a quarter of the price you pay for Beconase in Ireland. €5.12 for 200 doses in the UK vs €11 for 100 doses here
