Back to the tragic event, it has been picked up by most media here and he UK. It’s a tragedy that has resulted in death and devastation. It is also quite concerning for others. How does an explosion like this happen. What caused it. Could it happen again? The guards will carry out their investigation and hopefully find answers so tragedies like this can be avoided in future.

I just heard the list of names read out on the radio . No words can comfort those who lost a loved one

This is just (even more) heartbreaking.

Faces put to the numbers and names just adds to the sense of tragedy.

Terrible tradegy, condelences to all caught up in this, my heart goes out to them.

I found it quite surprising that many news outlets including RTE described it as "Accident", even as the recovery opperation was onging.

I understand what they are trying to employ, though that use of the term accident implies that there can be no attrubation of blame. I cant understand how they can come to that conclusion even before the Garda investagation can take place. Out of respect of the people involved we should be thourghly investagated and also to reduce the risk of this ever happening again.

An Gardai Siochana have a post on their Facebook with an update. It also carries a photo of all who lost their lives. The names and photos were released with the agreement of the families. it is very upsetting and heartbreaking but it is a touching and genuine acknowledgement of each person by name and age.

You can see the character of each person, as the photos are released from the families proud of their loved ones rather than taken from social media by the papers.

Has any news outlet given a breakdown of why the victims were at the petrol station / Apartments? It would be interesting to know whether they were residents in the apartment, store staff, or store visitors.

I don't see how that would be relevant outside of the garda investigation.

Why do you need to know why they were in the shop?

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,347 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

There has been some information given.

One girl who died, and her boyfriend who is seriously injured, lived in one of the apartments.

One of the deceased was working in the shop.

One man who died had just run in to use the ATM.

The father and 5-year old daughter who died were in the shop to buy a birthday cake for her mother.

Those are stories I remember off the top of my head.

Incredibly sad 😔 the poor souls and their loved ones, you never know how long you get in life

The gofund me support has been so good, their goal was 20k and they've since made 170k, people's kindness is warming

I don't see the relevance of that in the slightest. It will be, sadly, a combination of all those events. Interesting? Absolutely not.

Dear God. Just when I thought the standard couldn't get any lower.

I think it gives a very human side to the tragedy. Its shows that any one of us could have been a victim. I was in that shop 2 years ago when on holiday. Popped in for a couple of cold drinks. Tens of thousands of people all over the country and around the world have popped into the shop too just the same way. They were all doing mundane normal afternoon things and life was extinguished.

The CCTV seems to have been operated remotely and gave a great insight into the number of people there, and exactly where they were when the gas explosion occurred. It must have been harrowing for those viewing it, but also meant that everyone was accounted for very quickly.

But I still don't understand why the media is still calling it a petrol station explosion. My guess is that "gas explosion in apartment over local supermarket" doesn't have the sensationalist ring to it. Indo keeps saying it was an applegreen shop when it was a "nearby" supermarket recently rebranded from "primo" and was never a applegreen branded shop. Shows how journalistic standards are so bad these days

This thread is a depressing read in more ways than one.

Maybe that particular poster expected tears. But then they would have been of the 'crocodile' variety wouldn't they ?

When a deepset bias is involved any action however innocent can be decried and misrepresented.

I must say in passing this has been one of the most tetchy and ill-tempered threads I have ever encountered. This is all the more surprising given that the overall tone was primarily intended to be sympathetic and consolatory.

Maybe when raw emotions dominate the scene some balance and moderation tends to be lost. Let's hope it's just temporary.

One gentleman had given the dad and little girl a lift to buy the cake for her Mum , he was sitting in his car waiting for them when it struck him . Are dheis Dé go raibh a h-anamacha dilis

Somehow, these types of thread always seem to attract SOME people that have a very different attitude/mentality to those of us who normally frequent the Donegal forum.

I wonder whether it's callousness, or a lack of understanding of how Donegal people function as a community?

I suspect it may be difficult for people to understand that very few people in Donegal, and even some in surrounding Counties, have no connection to the people in Creeslough.

It might be that one of your neighbours has family from Creeslough. It might be that you've stopped off for fuel there, or to visit the deli. It might be that your kids attended school with bereaved family members. Or that they've socialised together.

Accusations of "echo Chambers" are nonsense. By and large, people all over the world have been respectful and sympathetic. For those that haven't - people frequenting this forum on a regular basis are anxious not to say or do anything that will add to the anguish. That's not being an echo chamber - that's commendable!

Personally, I'm proud to belong to a community, and a forum, that does what it can to offer support.

I'm proud of the community that rallied to help with the rescue, to bring food to those involved. To offer a few kind words to those suffering, or just a shoulder to cry on.

I'm proud of the way communities on both side of the border, and indeed, worlwide, rallied together to try and help whatever way they could.

It's a testament to our shared compassion and humanity.

An echo chamber, it is not!

For those who don't/won't understand that, I actually can't decide whether I feel sorry for you, or am just disgusted!

@Muffler. You have the patience of a saint! I've no idea how you put up with this!

Journalists require snappy headlines. It's easier to say, "Explosion at filling station", than "Explosion at apartments above shop adjacent to filling station forecourt..." I don't think it's anything to get too worked up about.

May they all rest in peace. Horrific for the local community.

I can sort of understand why somebody might notice things like the Taoiseach's demeanour during a tragedy.

What I don't get is why they feel the need to comment on it.

Not every **** little thought needs to be shared, especially not in a place where it won't be welcome. You need to be some sort of socially stunted moron not to know that instinctively.

@Patsy167 if you're that interested in the movements of the victims, rte news has just given details for almost all of them.

As others have said, doesn't matter a jot why the people were in the area at the time, it's a tragedy for family, friends and colleagues.

Relax. People being far too sensitive. The comment was one of inquisitiveness. And the investigations teams will no doubt be trying to find out all the details here.

A shocking tragedy for Ireland & Donegal, compounded with the mica disaster this is terrible for the county.

Tough thread for the mods, some very very strange posts.
