Stupid mistakes cost us again, should really be used to performances like this away in Europe but it isn't getting any easier.

Disappointing result bhoys. Comical error from Joe, he has been magnificent so some credit in the tank I feel. I see no reason why Celtic can’t reverse result next week, Leipzig are no where near the side they were. Celtic will never have a better chance to win two CL games as they do over next few weeks.

    OUT OF DEPTH

    SPL is the level.

2 home wins might not even be enough to go through . Might need a point in Madrid also

Predictable stuff yesterday. Ange has been brilliant since he came in with an attractive brand of football that the players have bought into. Champions League though is a completely different level. He can't set up v RB Leipzig away from home in the CL the same way as he'd set up v Motherwell or Kilmarnock. The midfield 3 that started McGregor, Hatate and Riley is far too lightweight for a game like last night. Also they're pushed too far forward, all it takes is one stray pass and Leipzig were running at the heart of the defence with the full backs probably pushed forward as well.

As said; Ange has been brilliant domestically and a breath of fresh air but this is a major step up and a steep learning curve for him as well as most of the players who are new to the CL. Big test for him and the players to see if they can get 3rd place in the Group with 3 games left. 2nd is gone at this stage I'd say.

Abildgaard did ok I thought in what was essentially his debut bar a few minutes appearance v Motherwell. He got caught very far forward losing the ball on the edge of Leipzig's 18 yard line as well same as McGregor before he went off. He was probably there under instructions though.

Ange needs to adapt and mix things up for this competition, he also needs to game manage better. He was slow making subs when 2-1 down with guys like Riley and Hatate and Maeda ineffectual or out on their feet. He and the players need to respond next week and show signs of learning on the job.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,322 ✭✭✭RoryMac

Looks like McGregor will be out for a good while, going to be a big loss. Abildgaard or Mooy most likely to fill that roll but they're going to have big boots to fill

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,607 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

McCarthty came on against Leipzig. He looked ok as he has done in several cameo appearances coming on towards the end of games. He mustn’t be able to get fit enough to start a game though which is unfortunate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,774 ✭✭✭eire4

Or it is simply the case that sadly he just isn't good enough any more to break into the team. In fact I was surprised when he didn't end up going out on loan towards the end of the last transfer window.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,322 ✭✭✭RoryMac

Apparently Ange in his interview before the game said he expects McGregor to be out for around a month so not as bad as first expected

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,607 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

McCarthy played a huge part in that crucial winner from big Giakoumakis. Nice cross from Bernabai and brilliant poachers finish.

What a roller-coaster that was,we were poor again today, still missing too many chances againbut we pulled this one out of the bag,the officials were an absolute disgrace

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,322 ✭✭✭RoryMac

Great to get the winner and it's the 3.points that matter but it was another poor performance. Going through a bit of a slump at the minute but we'll get out of it.

Glad Giakoumakis was on the end of the chance, he's clinical if we create chances for him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,296 ✭✭✭✭A Dub in Glasgo

That is what champions do - last minute winner even if playing poorly

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,607 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

Don’t like the look of that line up Ange is putting out v RB tonight. Expecting goals at both ends.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,322 ✭✭✭RoryMac

Yeah not the team I wanted to see, would've liked to see Abildgaard in to protect the back 4, Haksabanovic out wide instead of Maeda and GG up front.

Need to take our chances when they come

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,607 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

0-0 at halftime. We’ve defended better than I thought even though some of it not surprisingly was last ditch stuff. Giakoumakis is a good finisher of chances and hopefully we’ll see him on soon.

  • Registered Users Posts: 495 ✭✭polarbearhead

Ange has a big blind spot with Maeda.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,296 ✭✭✭✭A Dub in Glasgo

Terrible this half and Werner makes it 1-0 to Leipzig

2-0 now and with Shakhtar winning that will be Celtic bottom and out

Wasteful with the chances we had but ultimately we're still a good bit short of competing at this level.

Didn't like the team when it was announced, don't think Maeda is good enough for this level and GG and Abada need to be starting more games.

Almost certain to finish bottom of the group which is a big disappointment

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,093 ✭✭✭Brewster

Very disappointing bhoys. It was only a week or two I was saying they had a great chance to finish at least third, and a poster pointed out that 2nd place was well on. They have to go to Madrid now and get something, not impossible, but will be difficult. I was flicking between game and fantastic events at Hampden, and it looked a real end to end game. Thought Celtic had a couple of great chances to take the lead, thought Kyogo was very very poor. No composure at all. I read on Twitter that’s seven champions league defeats at home on the spin, a new record?? Last win was in 2013 against Ajax, hard to believe.

alive as much as a person on life support

Celtic have scored 2 goals in 4 games and shipped in 9 goals. There is no chance of overtaking Shakhtar or Leipzig

  • Registered Users Posts: 254 ✭✭dom40

That's the champions league finished early, not so much we never stop more like we never finish.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,093 ✭✭✭Brewster

It’s a long long shot; Madrid will have qualified and will likely play the reserves, so this isn’t over. But one step at a time, need to beat Shaktar first and set up last game shootout.

Finishing has cost us dearly in this campaign. Frustrating thing is creating some really good chances, more than before in Europe, but having zero composure to put them away. Should have got min 3 points from RB Leipzig for sure, and did enough to beat SD away also.

Maeda and Reo utterly frustrating tonight, and Kyogo off the boil completely.

CCV did well and is one of only a few who'd get pass marks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,044 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Simply not good enough at this level, got to take chances when they come, and Celtic have been wasteful in front of goal in this campaign.

A bit of luck might have helped the odd time too.

But need to try to find more clinical finishers for next season if they make CL.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,877 ✭✭✭Pogue eile

I thought Matt O'Reilly was our standout player, We'll be lucky to keep hold of him, top top player in the making.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,607 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

It’s a big step up from the SPL to European level and Ange and his team are miles off it. You can’t be going into a CL game without a recognised DCM. He had options, not great ones perhaps but still better than what he chose. His philosophy is to play the same way against Motherwell on a Saturday as Leipzig on a Tuesday. It’s nonsense he has to adjust the tactics and team selection for a completely different task. How Maeda is continuously picked often to start games and yesterday he played the full game when there are also several better options is beyond me.

The manager has some credit in the bank after winning the league last season with some enterprising football. He’s used up all that credit with a display of shocking naivety in this CL campaign though.

3rd place still an outside chance, he and the players need to wake up and make a decent effort of getting that. They didn’t ever really look like they even believed they had a chance last night. Some early pressing and then the tank was predictably empty.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,093 ✭✭✭Brewster

It does seem that his tactics don’t work in Europe. Maybe he is pushing his players beyond physical human capabilities, and they can’t keep it up for 90 mins?? While Celtic had their chances, they conceded so many chances on the night. It could have been 4 or 5 for them if were are being truthful. At the start, I was full sure Celtic were going to win last night. If you look back, Rangers beat RBL fairly comfortably over two legs just 5 months ago, and they didn’t really strengthen over summer. They had a poor start to season and got a new manager in. Celtic got a very favourable draw, with them and Shaktar in their pool, yet they are now struggling for 3rd place. I agree some scrutiny needs to be placed on Ange. You cannot let pride get in your way, maybe these tactics simply do not work in European football?? Thoughts?

I think the main challenge is the step up between Scottish football and the CL.

You will never get the amount of time on the ball in the latter that you do in Scotland. The question is how to fix it?

Leipzig are playing at a higher level in the Bundesliga - can't speak for Shakhtar.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,322 ✭✭✭RoryMac

You fix it by gradually increasing the quality of players we have. Bring in players with good potential and improve them, sell them for profit and bring in players with a bit more talent and repeat. Also need to actually find a way to develop our own players, the number of youth players that come through the academy and make to 1st time is near non-existent and that needs to change.

This campaign is a big disappointment and hopefully a wakeup call for the manager & staff but it's not a quick fix either, we can't spend £50m+ on players or pay them 10m in wages a year like RBL did in the summer. We need to build towards being in the CL groups every year and that's achievable which then generates the money to keep improving. I'd like to see us persevere with the style of football we're trying to play now and have that as the blueprint going forward regardless of who is in charge but we need to be a bit smarter at this level, a bit more pragmatic with our approach and the players picked when we go up against stronger teams

Lovely cross from Haksabanovic and great finish from Forrest to make it 1-0

Lovely cross from Bernabei and great finish from Giakoumakis to make it 2-0

Forrest gets his second although a howler from Marshall

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,296 ✭✭✭✭A Dub in Glasgo

Forrest gets his hat-trick and his 100th goal in his Celtic career a couple of minutes after Hibs pulled one back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,296 ✭✭✭✭A Dub in Glasgo

Giakoumakis scores his second with the help of a deflection. Kyogo hits the post

    Maeda makes it 6

Great team performance from celtic today, great too see maeda get on the scoresheet, that ref is an absolute cheating bstard.

McLean was a disgrace today and our next league game will have VAR next Saturday away to Hearts, will not make a difference if the officials are a bunch of cheats

He truly was. An utter disgrace and his bias was plain to see all game despite the 6-1 scoreline in our favour.

The SFA chairman said expect chaos for the first 3 months. They just copy what the English do. They really need their Independence.

All they are missing is John Beaton as 4th official.

Good first half from Celtic, the passing has been generally slick one touch. Plenty of chances and Abada scored just before half time

Good performance tonight. Very comfortable all night really even though it took a while for the first goal to arrive. Plenty of good performances. O'Riley looks very comfortable in the 6 role in McGregor's absence.

Forrest put Celtic 1 up at Tynecastle. Celtic had a goal disallowed but even though VAR looked at it, it was a soft foul

1-1 at half time. A penalty given after a VAR review, it looked a clear one to me anyhow Celtic were terrible in that half. The VAR reviews are taking too long and they need to quicken them up
