Fire Brigade Charges

I was involved in a car accident back July and this week I received an invoice from Fire Brigade.

I emailed it onto my insurance company FBD because it stated on my Third Party Fire and Theft policy that Fire Brigade charges are covered up to 2000 euro.

After many calls to FBD I was getting it difficult to get a response back from FBD on what is the situation regards the invoice but a week later my claims handler emailed me to tell me that I wasn't covered for Fire Brigade charges under Third Party Fire and Theft.

Were the charges in relation to your car or another vehicle?

FBDs TPF&T fire brigade charges cover applies to claims in relation to your car only.

There was another car involved and I presume the driver also got a fire brigade invoice to cover half the costs.

But the invoice I sent to my insurance FBD was one that was for my car.

They'll get the same invoice amount from the fire brigade as you did... who's at fault at incident usually pays their bill

If you only have 3rd party fire and theft, the fire brigade cover applies to fire or theft incidents only. If you have comprehensive, it will extend to include damage claims. If the other party was responsible for the accient, they are liable for all financial losses that follow

Just to update I rang FBD insurance and a sales agent told me that fire brigade charges up to € 2000 are covered under third party fire and theft.

I emailed my claims handler to tell her that my policy covers the charges but she won't respond. It looks like they are trying to get out of paying the invoice. If I call the claims department about it the agents don't want to know and tell me I would need to talk to the claims handler about it. And then I barely can get an email response from her.

So you got the name of the sales agent who told you this, right?

Then phone back up and assertively ask for a supervisor.

Insurance company tries to wriggle out of claim shock.

Don't worry about it OP, refer any other correspondence from the fire brigade to your insurance, they'll pay it eventually.

There's an F in TP,F&T for a reason!

One of the two staff members you spoke to doesn't know their stuff. My experience is that claims handlers are generally more knowledgeable as they get to test policy wordings in real life situations, whereas sales people just have their opinion of what the cover actually is.

There is no such thing as wriggling out of a claim. Policy wording is king. It's either covered or it's not. If there is an online link to your policy, I'll have a look and give my opinion

A quick look online and their policy wording seems to state the following under the Loss or Damage to Insured Car section

"Provided YOU have a valid claim under this section, we will pay any associated fire brigade charges.....up to €2,000" . As you don't have a valid claim for own damage, it appears you dont have the associated fire brigade cover. Just my thoughts

I am still waiting for the claims handler to reply to my email I sent Friday. I do have a valid claim. They are just trying to avoid paying the invoice. Even though she is supposed to be my claims handler, I never actually spoke to the woman once even though it's 3 months since I had the accident. I thought I would recieve a phone call from her to update me on the accident report but nothing. I just got a short email reply last week from her saying I was under TPFT so Fire Brigade Charges are not covered.

Are you saying that you yourself are claiming on your own TPFT policy for them to pay for your fire brigade bill on you behalf... someone else can claim on that insurance against you but you can't claim against your current motor insurance policy.

What is the valid claim you have which triggers the fire brigade charges extension? It's not a stand alone cover

Maybe that explains it. But the claims officer never said that, she just said that the charges were not covered under TPFT and the other claims agents never explained this to me anytime I asked them about the invoice. One of them did actually tell me to send it into the claims officer.

So I would have to claim of the other drivers insurance for the fire brigade charges then ?
