Bought this 2 years ago, thanks to the Bargain Alerts thread at the time.

Laptop working a dream since until 845 am this morning.

Went to close screen this morning and heard a crunching sound from the lower left side of the screen!

Noticed the screen was coming away from the hinge and pieces of black plastic breaking off!

Seems hinge faults are a known issue with this Laptop.

Wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue and any success with repair or compensation from Lenovo.

Online can find methods for self repair (glue it, or screw through the outside of cover), also seem in USA some have gotten it repaired by manufacturer outside of warranty period.

Same thing happened me today. Ideapad 5, went to open it and the screen started to come off from the hinge on the right side. It still works but i can't close it. It's only over a year old but is out of warranty. Reading online it seems this is a common fault. Suppose I'll have to get it fixed somewhere... But it's the last Lenovo I'll buy anyway.

Long thread here of people with the same issue: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/General-Discussion/Broken-Hinge-on-IdeaPad-5-15IIL05-Laptop-Type-81YK/m-p/5063546?page=1

They seem to have some success with getting it repaired/replaced by Lenovo but they seem to be mostly Yanks.

On my old dell one hinge snapped. I bought one with a different fault and stripped it parts to fix mine. Hinges are often problematic.

i'm on my third lenova and all 3 have had broken hinges...why i keep sticking with this brand i dunno...everything else works fine but one hinge always breaks on them...def a fault that they have refused to fix over the years...i haven't bothered getting in touch with them as from looking at others on the internet, they haven't had much response. i usually take the laptops apart and drill a screw or 2 through the casing to hold things together. def have to switch brands next time though

The other common factor is you...

But hinges breaking is far from uncommon.

And apple is one of the best makes...

I have seen some youtube videos with screws or epoxy glue. I have not tried either myself, but am thinking of trying the glue first. From looking about online this issue seems to be across a range of model, not the particular one I bought.

Fwiw, I contacted Lenovo at service_IE@lenovo.com got my laptop shipped to Germany to be repaired. It arrived there yesterday so we'll see how this goes.

Laptop repaired and returned. All for free and I was out of warranty (not by a lot, couple of months).

Thank you for the response, I will give them a go with an email, though am out of guarantee, longer than yourself.

    Hi,

Apologies for delay, my experience with resolving this issue has been mixed, solving the original problem has lead to another!

I followed the advice given here and contacted Lenovo at the address given, was sent a prepaid UPS tag to ship to Germany, the documentation was a bit vague about weather the repair was free or at my expense. The laptop arrived back within 2 weeks via Parcemotel, with a working hinge and a new lid, which was a darker grey than my original one, this is not an issue for me.

However while checking the laptop I realised that the webcam was no longer functioning, which it definitely was prior to sending to Lenovo. Attached are images of the error message I get which comes when I try to use the webcam in both image and video mode.

I have google searched and contacted Lenovo, they have given me various suggestions (uninstall, reinstall, update driver ect.) but the issue remain unresolved. Latest suggestion is to factory reset the laptop and reinstall operating system, am slow to do this fearing I fail to get it back working successfully.

Laptop is on Windows 7 as originally supplied, might updating it to Windows 10 resolve the issue?

Might it be easier to just buy an external webcam.

Grateful for any advice, other than this webcam issue, the laptop is excellent.

@chrisd2019 how's your laptop hinge since you got it fixed? Did you ever get the camera to work?

This also happened me a few days ago. I have an Ideapad 5 15ARE05 from June 2020 with a 3 year warranty that ended in June 2023. The laptop still works fine but it won't close so I'm using it as a desktop attached to a monitor for now.

I haven't contacted Lenovo yet but as I'm out of warranty I'm guessing they won't do anything. Does anyone know a good laptop repair place in Dublin that might be able to fix the hinge?

    Tia.
