Some new toys arrived today for the new holiday house in Lithuania..

Small Enrave White Ambience ceiling light for a downstairs bathroom, an outdoor Discover White & Colour Floodlight for a deck/back garden, and I’ve also a Medium Enrave White Ambience ceiling light arriving tomorrow, for the main bathroom upstairs..

I wired both up just to test them, and I have to say the Enrave is a very pretty light…

could anyone recommend a hue compatible indoor motion sensor? (for teenager bedrooms. apparently, turning off a switch or asking the echo to turn off the lights is just too much to ask) The hue ones are expensive, so wondering if there are alternatives

    Hi Folks,

    Will post this again here as because it's Hue related, might gain more traction in the Hue thread as opposed to the general chat thread;

Looking for tips or advice on a slightly IoT related topic.... Internet/Networking..

We are buying a holiday home, in Lithuania, and I've already a fair amount of Hue lights/bulbs for the house (like here, the whole house will be Hue'd up)

In the new house, we are probably only going to have a local mobile internet dongle that connects to local 3/4/5G network. We were over there during the summer and used her mothers one which seemed fine, and should suffice for our needs....

The issue is these dongles don't have any LAN ports on them, and only have a micro USB plug to power/charge them..... and with the Philips Hue Bridge, Obviously I need a LAN port to plug the bridge into..

Question is could I buy a simple plug in Wifi extender that comes with a built in LAN port, to connect wirelessly to the WiFi network my dongle will broadcast, and then use the LAN port to plug in the Hue Bridge? (And as a bonus I probably get to put out a stronger WiFi signal than the dongle would otherwise broadcast on it's own).

As a side note, will also have a WiFi controlled AC/heating system, as well as a RoboVac, but they should both just connect via WiFi so shouldn't be a concern. I'd maybe add a few IP cameras down the line too.

Hopefully I’m getting your question - but why not get a router instead of a dongle and still use a local sim? I have a huawei version of this for a past few years in an area with no fixed line broadband and the 4 LAN ports work perfectly.

This one is unlocked also so should work with any sim. Should be able to get an EU one with an EU plug also?

TP-Link Archer MR200 AC750 733Mbps Dual Band 4G LTE Mobile Wi-Fi Router, SIM Slot Unlocked, No Configuration Required, Removable Wi-Fi Antennas, UK Plug , Black https://amzn.eu/d/ggr6zri

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,760 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

    That’s very interesting, I didn’t even know they existed….

so I could get the local sim card, forego the dongle (though it probably comes with the sim card) and just pop the sim into one of these?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 970 ✭✭✭Pete123456

Yep! This is a dongle on steroids basically - same idea but in router form. Can pick them up on Amazon handy enough or you might even get one free from whatever company you’re planning to buy the sim from but then again you’re better off with an unlocked version.

Huawei b535 is another one. Huawei make a good few and even 5G ones but 5G ones are pretty dear for not much more speed depending on the area you’re putting it. Should be able to manage it remotely with the relevant app also.

Just found out that Livarno (LIDL) GU10 bulbs are longer than standard ones and will not fit some enclosed fittings. Luckily I had some spare Hue bulbs, or I'd have been in trouble. Might help someone....

For background I was changing the fittings in the kitchen for fire rated ones.

I've got 3 colour hue bulbs with the b22 bayonet fitting but I think they are wasted in the main ceiling rose in the bedrooms/living room as the colours are too harsh for a whole room. But I'm not sure where else I can use them. Most table lamps etc seem to come with e27 Edison screw in fitting. Anyone any ideas on a lamp/fitting or shade that would make better use of them as mood lighting or something?

Has anyone made the jump from full hue/hue app compatible lights to wifi smart assistant type lights? I have at least 50 hue lights indoor and outdoor but every time we do a new project the cost annoys me and the only time they interact as a whole is via home and away routines etc. within the house everything is on a routine or sensor and normal switches. Any other control is via google home

considering moving a room or two onto something like deltaco or Philips wiz solution, mostly driven by the hue sensors appearing in google home so looks like shortly will be able to use say an existing Philips sensor to drive outdoor lights that are directly on Wi-Fi via google home routine.

gradually then would replace all the Philips direct routines etc even for the hue bulbs control.

assuming it works, only major downside would be the mesh extension of hue connection from bulb to bulb, but this seems like would only effect garden lights.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,871 ✭✭✭Alkers

You can get bayonette to e27 adaptors in IKEA for 1.50 for a pair, they do add slightly to the overall length though.

For a centre ceiling rose, you really need a shade of sorts or an enclosed fitting to get the most out of them in fairness

I am a big fan of the Hue ecosystem, most of the lights in the house are controlled by them.

Two issues that I have with them are 1) the cost and 2) the "flimsy" feel of their four button lightswitches.

I bought a Sonoff Zigbee "ZBMINI" smart switch that could solve both issues. It was just 16e on Amazon.co.uk, and had the potential to replace both a Hue light and a Hue lightswitch in one go.

You wire it in behind your old light switch backplate. You can control the on/off of the module using your old light switch. You can pair the module to your Hue Hub for use in the Hue ecosystem. One gotcha is that you need a neutral wire behind your light switch, something that many older Irish households will not have.

I was surprised to find that everything worked! 🤗

Excited, I went out and bought their zigbee relay for another project:

Unfortunately, this did not even pair with the Hue hub :-(

I also bought their ZBMINI-L, which is supposed to be the same as their ZBMINI, but not require a neutral wire, making it much more compatible with Irish households.

This paired successfully with the Hue Hub and I was able to turn it on and off in the Hue App.

One issue I noticed that I had to be selective about the bulbs that I had on the same circuit as it. I happened to have an old Philips Hue bulb on the circuit which caused an issue: The light would turn off, but not back on when instructed. I assume this is due to the following: As the module has to neutral wire, it has to extract power parasitically from the live wire: i.e. the live wire has to have some power going through it, even when "off". I assume that the Hue had very little standby current. When I swapped out the bulb for a normal LED bulb it worked fine.

However, and strangely, I found a more serious issue. if I added it to a room in the App, I could not control it by turning on and off all the devices as a room. This meant that I could not control it from Google Home, making it worthless to me 😔

Lastly, i bought the Sonoff Socket relay for 13e.

This worked great with Philips Hue.

In summary, the Sonoff ZBMINI and Sonoff Zigbee socket is great for Philips Hue, but stay away from the relay and the ZBMINI-L.

Any go to places for Hue these days?

I have the entire house outfitted over the past few years and am now looking for another outdoor 5m lightstrip. I used to default to Amazon but between Brexit and the few years passing they look to be punitively priced.

    Any consensus on good retailers?

What are the settings so that the lights don't come on following a power cut? Power came back at about 1am last night. Is it looking at each bulb and the Power On option? Had power loss - stays off or turn back on ticked.

    Hue Xmas lights incoming.

$160 for 250 bulbs. Little too rich for my blood. My tree has 3,000 bulbs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,760 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

    yeah, not for me,

I've 2 strings totalling about 1,600 warm white LED fairly lights, and that's all I'll ever want or need. don't need colour, and don't need flashing/animated....

On a separate note, I've ordered 4 of the large globe filament white ambiance bulbs for a light fitting I just bought for a dining table light...

They were €35 each down from €45 (which is what the giant globes currently cost, but I'll be happy enough with the regular sized ones!

I have 6x GU10 colour spots for the main kitchen area, a light strip for over the top of the kitchen units, and now these 4 white ambience globes in this fitting above the dining table!!!

Fcuk Me fitting out 1 house was expensive enough, but fitting out a second one!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,871 ✭✭✭Alkers

Has anyone come across a reasonably priced power extension for the hue lightstrips, to allow them be installed further from a power source?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,871 ✭✭✭Alkers

Also, has hue sync stopped working for most things for anyone else?

Rte player and netflix aren't causing my.entertainment area to interact anymore. YouTube, games and local files working fine

    Just going back to this…

I picked up a refurbished Huawei B535 on Amazon, and they ended up sending me the next version up from it, but it was branded with EE logo and wouldn’t take any of the sims I tried in it…. Got onto them and they started giving me unlock codes, but I couldn’t even get to an unlock page so I boxed it up and sent it back pronto…… I only ordered the Huawei one because it was white and might fit better in the house….

Anyway on Thursday I ordered a TP-Link Archer MR400 on Amazon for about €96 and it arrived this morning. I fired it up with a mobile SIM card and within seconds it was connected to the internet and working as required…. Happy days and cheers for the heads up on 4g routers…

Although it’s black, it’s much smaller & thinner than the Huawei one I had briefly!!

Also picked up 2 B27 White Ambience bulbs for about €33 yesterday to go behind this light…. Couldn’t justify having 2 colour bulbs behind it!!

Quite new to this home automation game but I'm getting addicted. im looking at a pack like the one attached can anyone give me a quick rundown of the pros and cons, or whether there is a better receommendation?

Philips Hue White and Colour Ambiance Smart Light Bulb Starter Kit, 75W - 1100 Lumen [E27 Edison Screw] 3 Bulbs + 2 Smart Buttons, With Bluetooth, Works with Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Homekit : Amazon.co.uk: Lighting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,760 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

That’s the starter kit you want as you get the bridge, and 3 of the colour bulbs which are the top of the range bulbs. You also get the button switch with it. Once you get this kit all you need to grow your system is additional bulbs or additional switches & sensors.

this is the starter pack I’d recommend.

    the various styles of Hue bulbs come in 3 grades;

White = warm white standard type bulb

White Ambience = warm to cold whites and everything in between

White & Colour Ambience = like the white ambience above but with the addition of colour

best place is still Amazon but always be watching for deals (2 colour e27 bulbs were €56 last week but normally over €100 for a pair)

Saw that alright but didn't pull the trigger, they had been £30 a month or two ago which I was raging to have missed. There is a newer E27 bulb out which is 1600 lumens and slightly bigger with length 130 and width 67 if brightness is important to you. The 1100 lumen bulbs are 110 in length 60 in diameter:

The bargain alerts thread is dead, nothing of value at all recently.

Suffice to say it’s all worked out quite well…

I’m in Lithuania at the moment and signed up to a 4G data plan yesterday (€11.39pm for 24 months with unlimited data), All I needed was my passport and an email address and I was out the door with the SIM card in 5 minutes!!

back to the house and plugged in the router and BANG!! Up and running in 30 seconds… and pretty impressive speeds too

Set up the Philips Hue Bridge and added it to my app and started linking up the lights I’d already installed, as well as throwing in some various bulbs here and there… to just get some automation going…

These are the 2 Enrave Hue While Ambience lights in the bathrooms, small & medium size..

    Happy Days!!

I've a fair bit of Hue throughout the house. Lightstrips, colour bulbs, warm white bulbs, dimmer switches. Have a couple of sensors but never found a need for using them.

I am about to do a re-wire and I'm not sure I'll take Hue into consideration. I think I'll rewire as normal, regular switches etc. If I want to add existing Hue stuff back in I will, but as I would have done initially, put a dimmer over a traditional switch Etc.

I guess why I'm posting is this....feels to me like Hue is at best a nice to have, and I could totally live without it.

The ask......tell.me why I am wrong!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,760 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

I got my first hue starter set 9 years ago and yeah it’s a very nice to have, but I couldn’t live without the automation of it all at this stage… all in I’ve probably bought about 150+ various Hue bulbs over the years..

As I posted above I’ve just started fitting out a holiday home we bought in Lithuania with Hue and I put a few bulbs in on Thursday after I got internet hooked up…. And found it a pain in the hole having to get the phone out to adjust lights…. By the time i flew home on Sunday night I’d already set up 2 dimmer switches and a sensor, and have since added a basic routine to turn a few lights on/off every day.

regarding sensors, for me they are by far the best aspect of the hue system…. I have one in the kitchen, bathroom, en-suite and my office (and now in the bathroom in the holiday house, and I need at least 2 more for there). They are in the rooms that aren’t controlled by any routine as they are lights that only need to come on when those rooms are in use….

overall for me the best thing about the system is the lack of user input that’s needed on a day to day basis…. I still have dimmer switches everywhere if I ever need to change a room to a brighter/dimmer scene or turn a light on/off outside of its scheduled time, but those times are few and far between example: I’ve 11 dimmer switches at least 3 years now and have only ever changed the battery on 2 of them..

id still wire the house up as normal as if you ever do leave it…. You’ll want to take your very expensive smart lighting system with you…… I reckon I must be in for over €10k with it all at this stage!!

I'd rewire to a smart home system if I was rewiring. Seems better to make the switches and plugs all smart while you are at it. I'd also run Ethernet everywhere and multiple drops for the most important rooms. Run it all back to a utility where you can have your internet/modem/switches and servers controlling everything/serving media. A raspberry pi will do for a lot of services.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭BoardsMember

Thanks. Yes I'm planning Ethernet to all rooms and POE circuit to specific spots for my Ubiquiti APs, all back to a single location.

When you say rewire to a home smart system, what do you mean?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,326 ✭✭✭OfflerCrocGod

KNX, Velbus, Loxone or Shelly who also have some interesting products. You'd have to do your research as I haven't had time to dig into them all to figure out their pros and cons.

    Quick question

I have a Sonoff 3.0 Zigbee hub connected to home assistant, I presume I can use this instead of the Philips Hue Hub to connect any Hue lights I put in...

Question to the folks that have integrated IKEA smart lighting into their Hue setup…

We just had a kitchen installed in our holiday home, and we got the led under unit lights with it, but they also came with this dimmer/remote, which the guy says isn’t working, so we just have basic on/off functionality via a wall switch….

One of the cables for a light was also missing so one of the lights wasn’t installed which is fine as I’ll do it when I’m back over there and the guy explained where it’s to go..

The question is can I integrate these kitchen unit lights into my Hue setup? Or would I need to add any additional hardware (like Ikea’s smart home bridge) to make them work with Hue?

Also not sure if the lights in the ikea extraction fan also can be remotely controlled with the same remote/smart/hue?

I've some IKEA switches controlling hue lights (and IKEA lights running on hue) at home. The switches don't show in hue, there was a third party android app I had to download and then you had to pair the switch with each light your want it to work with. Was a pain to do for downloghters but on working, had been faultless

Anyone know how to wipe Hue completely from Google Home? Utterly frustrated here. Broken bulbs impossible to remove from Google Home. Everything is set up fine on Hue App, but I want to start from scratch on Google Home and can't seem to find out how. I thought I'd managed to remove Hue from Google Home but it still has all the Lights and Rooms.

I seem to have unlinked it but Google Home still showing all the old lights.

Same issue with Nest. Neither Hue nor Nest are now linked to Google home but when I tell Google to synch devices it tells me they both failed to synch.

Anyone know how to turn on a hue smart plug automatically? I have a couple of Lidk smart plugs that I want to turn on at specific times. They are recognised by ypthe hue app and I can turn them on/off from the app. However I cannot find and way of turning them on from a routine. The on,y options I can find is turn it off or set it to a certain brightness. Am I missing something?

Whats the story with the future of Philips Hue? I read recently that they have had to be bailed out by the Agnelli family to the tune of $2.5B following a massive recall of faulty product... They are to concentrate on their medical products rather than consumer tech...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,808 ✭✭✭irelandrover

Philips don't actually own hue anymore. Signify took over a few years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,760 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

Just going back to this, we were just over in Lithuania for 3 weeks, and on the very last night I said fcuk it I want to get the rest of the kitchen counter lights working... 3 were installed but only 1 was working because Ikea didn't initially send 2 cables to plug them in.... so I finally got around to wiring them up, and said I'd give it a go pairing them to the hue hub, and low and behold they appeared when searching for them (had to toggle them on/off to get them seen by the hub... but they work and are now added to my Hue setup!!

They appear to be a white only type of colour, but I can live with that.... and I don't need to use the silly Ikea remote that came with them as they work seamlessly with my existing Hue remotes...

Any one ever experience the motion sensor always triggering their lights no matter what the light level sensitivity is set to?

Happening in my kitchen now and it's annoying.

Anyone thinking of getting the Philips cameras?

I see the app now let's you use your motion detectors to notify you if there's movement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,760 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

Nah, I’ll just stick to the bulbs…

ingot these EZVIZ cameras for the holiday house, and they also do smart plugs, so I’ve gone all in with them for cameras…

I think I'll get two for outside. One to cover the back and one for the front, possibly a third for inside but I'll only be buying when they're reduced like all my hue gear 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭BoardsMember

Anyone ever get an error - can't reach the Philips Hue - from Google Home? Hue app can control the lights but in some rooms where the Google home is on the wifi it can't seem to see the hue bridge. All on the same network. Do the Hue bulbs need to see the bridge, I would have thought being on the network is sufficient.

Have 2 white and colour light bulbs in kitchen. When I turn them on one lighter white than other even though same setting. Then after a while they flicker to match

    Anyone experience this?

I'm having difficulties connecting Philips Hue bulb to Google Home, not sure if it's even possible.

I'm not using a bridge and trying to connect with the 'works with Google ' option. Keep getting the 'could not reach Philips Hue' message.

    Any help appreciated 👍🏼

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,871 ✭✭✭Alkers

It's definitely possible, have most of the lights in my house setup with it for a couple of years now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,748 ✭✭✭Bluefoam

The hub acts as a hub, so you need to use the hub + hue app to get the light working and to then connect to Google Home. At least that's the intended out of the box... I'm sure someone on the internet has discovered another way to use them without the hub, but it's likely to be a complex matter.

    Hi everyone 👋

I have a hue light strip behind my TV that comes on with the socket for the TV. This switch is turned off at night so when the TV is put on the next day the light strip comes on. I have a hue light button, it's a round one that can detach from a faceplate. I can't see a setting to turn on the light. I can get it to turn off but nothing for turning it back on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,760 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

Are you using a Hue Bridge? If so go to the accessories section of the app and adjust what you want each press of the button to do.

with the button you need to press it quickly repeatedly to flick through the preset scenes, but if you press it when it hasn’t been pressed in the previous 5 seconds it will turn off the light.

  • Registered Users Posts: 255 ✭✭EletricMan

Ya on the hue bridge, it's only giving me four options for single press

    1) light off

    2) single scence

    3) scence cycle

    4) time based light.

    I have option 1 ticked.

And for second option press and hold four options

    1) Do nothing

    2) turn off

    3) dim up down

    4) entire home off

Does anyone have the above? If so do you know if these can be connected to a Hue Hub like some of the other IKEA smart bulbs? Was going to pick up some for the sitting room if they work.
