Golf or passat?

I currently have a 2010 VW Golf and am looking to upgrade to a newer car in the new year.

My current Golf is a 1.2 TSI Comfortline model with 188000kms on the clock. I've owned it since Feb 2021 and since buying it have had to get some expensive jobs carried out, such as having the DSG gearbox rebuilt, front brake pads/discs replaced, as well as the two front shock absorbers. I feel that with that mileage, more things are going to go in time so it makes sense to get a new car.

I like VW and am on two minds whether to get another, new(er) Golf, or upsize to the Passat.

So far I have been looking at both Golfs and Passats from 2016 upwards, all with less than 100000kms covered. I feel however, the newer Golfs don't come as equipped as my current one, e.g. smaller engine. And while I don't need a bigger car as such, I do like the look of the Passat saloon, all of which I've looked at are much higher spec of my current Golf.

Just wondering what would the advantages/disadvantages from getting either one be? Hoping somebody can help out here 🤔 ??

    Thanks in advance.

If your willing to look at another Golf or Passat you should definitely consider looking at the Octavia as well. While it's sits on the Golf chassis is sits right in the middle in terms of size between the other two.

Or if your set on VW what about this ?

I think you need to put things in perspective here. Outside of the DSG gearbox needing a rebuild which unfortunately is a common problem on certain versions of the early DSG gearboxes, the other things are defined under general car maintenance and are general wear and tear items related to both mileage and age. Remember 188k km is not high mileage for a 12 year old car so what you have experienced in repairs is not exclusively related to mileage.

And buying a newer car with 100k km or less on the clock doesn't gurantee you anything around lower maintenance bills either. As with any second hand car it really depends on how the previous owners treated them. Depends how they were maintained and what type of roads they were driven on. Buying a newer car will not guarantee you won't be spending money on maintenance again.

Why let somebody else have the benefit of your investment? New box, new brakes and shocks - it must feel like a bloody new car!

If the car is not making peculiar noises, keep it.

Shock absorbers and break pads & discs are wear & tear items that need replacing on all cars and are not particularly expensive. Admittedly the DSG rebuild was unfortunate and is unlikely to happen again on a newer VW but you can’t completely rule it out.

What do you mean the new Golf’s don’t come as equipped as your Golf? They come in 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 2.0 engines. And they have various equipment levels like Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, etc.

Your car isn’t bad, I’d be inclined to keep it. Particularly with new shocks, breaks and gearbox. If your trading in you’ll have to spend at least €10k to get into a low spec 2016 DSG Golf

I wouldn't bother even replying, it will just be another facebook type argument. I don't think the poster even owns a car.

I don't hate everything VW. Believe it or not when the MK iV Golf was revealed I quite liked it and loved it beige interior but then they were everywhere most if them with dull black hard dash and I begin to realise what a lazy fat car it was. I still like the MK V do and think that was the best ever Golf but after that VW have just gone downhill and become so boring with no imagination. There nearly made something great with the ID3 but nope that ends up boring and sloppy looking too.

I used the like the Passet the 1997 model had nice style to it and the one after that too with the big chrome grill but since them it has just gotten boring.

Also scum driving them does not help its image either.

You should really give it a rest with the VAG thing at this stage. You've become the most boring poster here on this forum. Nothing of use to contribute. Same silly moan over and over.

It's not a moan it's my opinion. We are all entitled to our own opinion.

"It's not a moan it's my opinion. We are all entitled to our own opinion."

But when you post the same old 'opinion' over and over, it becomes a moan and to be honest

your same 'opinion' time & time again is very boring and tiresome at this stage.

That B4 Passat and B4.5 had horrendous strain on the CV boot/joints. Never seen a car to go through them so quickly
