    The Watcher - utter horsehíte.

I should have known as it's a Ryan Murphy vehicle, avoid at all costs.

The issue is never the issue; the issue is always the revolution.

The Entryism process: 1) Demand access; 2) Demand accommodation; 3) Demand a seat at the table; 4) Demand to run the table; 5) Demand to run the institution; 6) Run the institution to produce more activists and policy until they run it into the ground.

Is Murphy being paid a king's ransom, cos he's heading an absolute tonne of shows ATM on Netflix.

$300 million 5 year deal in 2018. Dhamer thing is his first success for them, apparently, and it came as his deal is about to expire, so.... Good for him, I guess.

Good lord. That's some chunk of change, though as it's Netflix I shouldn't be at all surprised. Meanwhile the craft and tradespeople making the damn things don't see a fair slice.

Yeah, it's really no surprise that Netflix ended up with financial woes. I'm sure a lot of people got similar deals from them around that time. Shonda Rhimes got an initial $100 million deal, but she's given them Bridgerton, so she's maybe the rare example of someone being worth it.

Kurt Sutter has also jumped to Netflix from FX for big money.

Just finished Midnight Club, I thought that was pretty good. Had a similar sort of idea to the Fear Street trilogy in that the season takes several of Christopher Pike's books and adapts them, with the Midnight Club adaptation being a framing device.

Tonally I'd say it's somewhere between Are You Afraid Of The Dark? and Fear Street. As a series it's fairly character-focused and really that's the reason to watch it - the stories the kids tell in it are fun, and told in entertaining ways, but it's the characters in the framing story that make it an enjoyable watch.

Touching the void is an all time great

I watched The Curse of Bridge Hollow - another family friendly Halloween movie by Netflix. Wasn't expecting much and was what I expected but the kids enjoyed it.

However, there were two instances in this film where both myself and my wife's eyebrows were raised relating to Marlon Wayan's character remarks about white people, where if a white person was to say the same about a black person it would immediately be a headline.

One such remark - "This house smells like a dead white lady"

Anyone else who saw this film, did you catch these casual racism?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,313 ✭✭✭splashthecash

Dolemite Is My Name is a Netflix movie - why was that taken off in the first place? Strange...

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,625 ✭✭✭flasher0030

I know what you mean, but it's not quite as black and white as that (pardon the pun!!).

I am far from an expert on the subject of racism, but I think it generally carries with it some inference of it being towards a minority group. There is a term called racial prejusice that may apply, which is different than hostile racism.

Those few comments are at a very basic level. Maybe someone with a qualificaiton in Sociology may have something more concrete to add.

Netflix combating password-sharing with ‘Profile Transfer’ feature

Netflix has been struggling to regain subscribers and recover its revenue. Earlier this year, the company began testing new ways to prevent users from sharing their passwords with others. Now Netflix is rolling out a new “Profile Transfer” feature that will let users migrate their personal profile from someone else’s account to a new one.

How does Netflix’s “Profile Transfer” work?

The company announced on Monday (via Variety) that Netflix users can now transfer an existing profile to another Netflix account without losing content recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and other personal settings.

Netflix says the “much requested” feature will help users in many situations, such as moving out of a household and relationship endings. A Netflix user will be able to keep all their preferences and content saved while moving to a brand new account. But in the background, this is a way for Netflix to motivate those who use a friend or family member’s account to, instead, pay for their own subscription.

What is the point in migrating your profile....their recommendation system is pants!

I saw an article earlier today that said between January and September this year the number of households in the UK subscribed to at least one streaming service fell by 937,000, due to the cost of living crisis. There's still 16million with at least one, but still, that's nearly a million. And Netflix themselves only accounted for 2% of new subscribers in the third quarter of the year.

It feels like Netflix are still trying to respond to the drop off in subscribers caused by the sheer variety of competition, when the world has already moved on a step and there's other issues now affecting people's habits.

The service with ads, and now this nothing of an idea, don't really seem to be a solution to any of it.

Profile transfer is a "Much requested" feature? If you had a screen for yourself shared from a 4k sub why would you want to leave and get your own sub at extra expense? I dont get it.

Doesnt look good though. Looks like a crap idea someone came up with before eventually flat out banning password sharing.

Though there’s agreement on how impressive the number of interesting philosophical issues that are tackled here, there are wildly differing reviews on how good and bad this is put together. Looks like a Sunshine/Event Horizon mixture, with a splash of Alien tropes, so could be worth a go if sci-fi horror is your thing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 31,592 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

I could see it being a commonly enough requested thing alright… a couple breaks up, or someone moves out of a house-share situation (this would be super common id imagine), or the bill-payer is cancelling their sub and one of the shared people wants to keep their own profile, etc etc

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,373 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

I place zero value in my Netflix profile, surprised to hear people do and would benefit from the ability to transfer.

  • Registered Users Posts: 31,592 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

It definitely doesn't seem like a big deal but I mean, all things being equal, I would rather have the option to keep it than not... just the extra little convenience of the stuff already added to the watchlist, or having it remember where you are in whatever shows you're watching. No big deal if its not there, but its a reasonably handy free addition.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,705 ✭✭✭jj880

Fair enough in those cases. Just seems like suspect timing to introduce it. "We're gona force you off your shared sub but you can take your profile with you! Turn that frown upside down!" If it does go that way I can see mass binnings of netflix subs.

I'm increasingly of the belief that Netflix has absolute idiots in charge, and their success from being the Only Game In Town papered over the cracks, while the decision-makers got high on their own hype. They seem absolutely incapable of responding to adverse conditions with anything resembling sensible consideration - which seems very typical of these Late Capitalism corps with "Infinite Growth, the party'll never end!!" as their driver.

As you point out, subscriptions to streaming services will only shrink as the Cost of Living Nightmare bites further and harder; and Netflix's shovelware approach will quickly drive more people away, towards more reliable or interesting services. I'm not quite there myself, but I'm kinda hanging around at this stage for all those quirky auteur productions indulging the likes of Henry Selick or Guillermo DelToro of late, rather than the latest Character X discovers a secret sect of Pixies, Werewolves, Bog Monster trash they seem to love.

Ah here lads. Isn't all this in-depth chat about subscription service, instead of recommendation chat, for the likes of the Sofa thread?

Still think Prime is the best. I can get packages delivered on the same day sometimes, PL football tomorrow and tonight and a semi decent selection of stuff to watch.

The Sofa thread itself? It's in a sub-forum for Television (General), here:

There's probably a dedicated discussion thread about the service as well though. If not, it might well do with one, as there's lots of issues with it.
