One other thing I always found bizarre, was the fact that Howard Blake who composed the original score to the Snowman, was not involve din the sequel, the snowman & the snowdog... I always found the score to the original a wonderful piece of musical art that gave life to the story, something that the sequel lacked a tad. I've watched the original a few times, but the sequel I think I've only ever watched twice.

Its its 10th anniversary this year. Was first shown in 2012. Which means the original is 40 years old this year!! I still remember watching the original broadcast!!

Stop me too, I could have sworn the sequel aired 2 years ago not 10!!!

For me, The Snowman was a once off piece of unique film, so I never bothered watching the sequel.

Think that's a fair opinion. As I said, I've watched the original loads of times but only watched the sequel twice, first time the day it aired & again a couple of years ago to remind myself was it any good (its only okay, nowhere near as magical as the first)

I watch both every year since I started with watching both about 5 years ago. First is a masterpiece, second is ok but I still enjoy it.

Was listening to the desert islands discs podcast with Raymond Briggs today. Never knew he was such is a miserable sod. He absolutely hates Christmas. Said his ideal Christmas is locked away somewhere until it's all over. Said he can't stand the period and also said he made Santa grumpy in his other story as he said Santa would be a horrible person who would hate his job of he were real.

Listened to him being interviewed a few years back, think it was around the time the snowman sequel was being released and he sounded a right miserable old git back then too. He came across quite poorly on that interview and managed to squeeze in his dislike for christmas then too. To be fair IIRC he was more angry with the commercialisation of christmas and was saying it should be a far simpler holiday, but that pandoras box had been opened and that was that. And as grumpy as he was he did have a point.

Bit rich from him considering the commercialisation of Christmas lined his pockets really well.

I'm glad now I'm not mad about The Snowman, or I'd be a bit peeved! 😂

"Christmas Comedy Club with Lost Voice Guy 2022" is the strangest name for a tv show. Like something from the Simpsons.

Am in two minds about The Detecorists as loved the series and how it ended.

Lost voice guy was a winner from Britain’s got talent.

I'm always unsure about a TV show making a reappearance after an absence of a few years/after it wrapped up.

I've never seen the Detectorists, and they've taken it off Netflix now. 😐

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭pigtail33

I only saw the last series of The Detectorists, it's real slow paced, switch your mind off kinda telly. Just what's needed sometimes.

I'm hoping the World Cup won't interfere with the Christmas TV schedule too much. I'm not a big soccer fan and it's going to be strange having all those matches on in December!

I binge watched it in summer over one week, one episode a night at end of the day ... after one episode didn't really grab me, but it's a slow grower and then when a series ended I missed having it. Perfect unwind TV, gentle comedy.

Correct. It’s only 4 years ago. TRS finger slipped when he went to hit 4.

Is it just me or has Bake off been a let down this year?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,702 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

    It has a bit. 😖

Matt grates on me a little- he seems like a nice guy, but his strange jokes falling flat while the contestants smile politely and tumbleweed rolls by is uncomfortable every time.

Plus, Mexican week? Halloween week? That odd bread week where they made pizzas and pastries? No, no. Stick with the classics. Tacos are not baked goods, and nobody wants to cut into a lovely frosted cake to find it stuffed with shrimp and herring. 🤢 The showstoppers looked more like bush-tucker trials that week. 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,723 ✭✭✭✭DvB

I'm enjoying it but it's nowhere as near as good as last year. Standard not as high as previous years imo.

Exactly, for me it's the mexican and Halloween themed weeks that irked me, there's very little baking in Mexican week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭pigtail33

The last two years, everyone in the tent was in a bubble, so the relationships between them all came through on screen, that's missing this year. Plus, they are trying too hard to have different themed weeks every year. I think it's time to hit the reset button and go back to basics.

This looks like it will be fun and as a Marvel fan I’m very excited to see it

Food Network's online schedule is only 7 days ahead, so we should be able to see tomorrow if they bring Christmas shows in on 01/11. That really starts the serious countdown for me.

It may actually be 14 days schedule on Sky if you pay for that, but the channel is free and I don't!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,859 ✭✭✭Jude13

I am no fan of marvel but I will be watching that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭pigtail33

I updated my EPG yesterday just to check this and yes, they are starting their Christmas cookery shows from 01/11. I really hope they have some new shows this year, most of what they show, I have seen plenty of times before. It won't stop me watching them again though! I can't resist any sort of Christmas baking shows.

    Fantastic.

I've probably watched the most recent Jamie Oliver Christmas show about ten times at this stage, and I'm slightly obsessed with the decoration in one of the older Nigella ones.

I'm a Celeb back Nov 6th, earlier this year due to the World Cup.
