I was told that was very much a box ticking exercise.

Would be a good appointment if say, if it is properly resourced with a good backroom team.

Can't see it happening, it's either Rochford hoping to hurry up the Mayo gang, someone in Roscommon flying a kite and providing a distraction, or the least likely of all in this case the journalist just making up something to make a headline (not normally this guys form).

Smells like BS, but let's see, I'll be happy if I'm wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Noises being dropped about Pat Flanagan over the weekend.

Don't want to judge without seeing what backroom team is proposed, but would seem an underwhelming, unambitious appointment on the face of it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,074 ✭✭✭manofwisdom

His club CV speaks for itself but has struggled in county management and would be a downgrade on Anthony Cunningham.

Division 3 level coach at best, really underwhelming to say the least.

  • Registered Users Posts: 201 ✭✭Spiderpig92

Surely one of the 3 defeated Mayo tickets should be looked at? All will obviously be eager to show the Mayo county board what they were missing out on!

    Shocking event in ballyforan.

Lengthy ban coming for the team mentor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

You're right. On the face of it, it looks clearcut and a long ban could be the least of that guys worries, but best not to comment too much on it until the authorities see their processes out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 216 ✭✭BobDole22

Referees going on strike I hear this weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Actually not confirmed yet, as in the fixtures for this evening are still 'on' and haven't been cancelled.

Whatever about the action of the referees, there are a lot of young lads a little over 8 hours away from a championship game that don't know whether it's on or off - either cancel it or don't, but make the call.

  • Registered Users Posts: 971 ✭✭✭Green Peter

It's time referees made a stand, I think all refs nationally should withdraw from matches this weekend. Hard to believe the mentality of a supporter or team mentor who thinks it's acceptable to do what he did. Something is seriously wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

    And still we wait......

Over 3 full months since we were dumped out of the championship, we're still waiting on the appointment of a new management team for our footballers.

We're a fvckin laughing stock -leaks of club level managers dropping twice weekly but still not any closer to an appointment.

  • Registered Users Posts: 216 ✭✭BobDole22

    Kieran Donaghy apparently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

That rumour was knocking about over the weekend, but don't think it's true.

Gealic Life say he's staying at Armagh, and he's denied it himself.

  • Registered Users Posts: 216 ✭✭BobDole22

    Ah never mind so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Just shows, nature abhors a vacuum, and in the absence of any movement or appointment by the board after 3 months +, rumours are bound to start.

In other news, Noel Dunning confirmed as U20 boss, with Frankie and Donal Neary (Strokestown) as selectors.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,080 ✭✭✭blowitupref

Is the new Roscommon manager a current club manager and the county board are waiting for his club season to finish before appointing him? Donegal seem to be doing that Rory Kavanagh. Donegal and Roscommon the last teams to appoint managers and both in Div 1 next year.

Magnificent and unlikely raid by the northern clubs today to setup a novel county senior final. Could both intermediate and senior go north this year?

In other news, our rumoured next manager pushed out further as his club side continues to win on that respective club championship

    You don't mean O'Hara?

    I hope not.

Great wins for Strokesown and Boyle.

As a Gaels man myself, I believe we threw it away. Both goals were terrible goals to give away from a defensive point of view and gave Strokestown the belief that didn't seem to be there beforehand. Fair play to them, they made the most of it and showed tremendous determination to take it over the line.

Was very impressed with Boyle. The 'great attack, no defense' issue seems to have been cleared up. There are no longer any passengers on that team and I personally fancy them strongly to win the final. Not that it will be easy, but I think they have too much class and certainly don't seem to be lacking in the determination department either.

Either way, the pairing is good for football in the county.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

O'Hara, FFS no! I don't have any insight to be honest, but more likely to be a certain ex-clubmate of your own than the model Eamonn.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,080 ✭✭✭blowitupref

Couldn't have been a more difficult Connacht championship draw for Roscommon, Mayo in the quarter final in MacHale park had to be with McStay in charge. The winner will face defending Connacht champions and All Ireland runners up Galway and the loser of the quarter final tie will be a 3rd seed in the group stage of the All Ireland championship and over a month before they play their next game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,088 ✭✭✭rn

    No don't mean o hara.

Ya tough draw. Still you just have to put in two monumental performances and should be guaranteed connacht.

And the manager already has significant rebuilding work.

No doubt a few players will consider their 2023 plans also and opt out. I guess it creates opportunities for the great u20 team from 2021.

Heard a rumour that mc stay very impressed with mayo Co development panels. He's been looking at club games and those on development panels standing out significantly over the normal club player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

There is a lot of talent coming through at Mayo, the likes of McStay and Rochford wouldn't be tripping over other to get involved otherwise.

Anyway, we have enough to worry about within our own county, what a fvckin mess we're in.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,800 ✭✭✭Always_Running

Which one of rumoured names will be the best fit for Roscommon seniors in 2023?

Tom Cribbin, Davy Burke, Bernard Flynn, Pat Flanagan or Brendan Hackett.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,562 ✭✭✭✭yabadabado

    I expect it will be F O'D .

Whoever takes over is on a hiding to nothing next year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,800 ✭✭✭Always_Running

    Don't believe O'Donnell was interviewed.

Talk now that Bernard Flynn has opted out. Was to have Stephen O'Neill on board as a forwards coach.

If and probably a big if that Roscommon can get a new manager in with a decent defensive coach the year may not be a write off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,398 ✭✭✭megadodge

It's not attacking forward play that Roscommon need coaching in, it's coaching the forwards how to defend.

If that can be done, there's loads of football in that team and they can do damage.

I can't stand this defeatist attitude so many Roscommon people have. It's that pervasive kind of thinking that invariably infiltrates a team and ends up being a self-fulfilling prophecy. Self-belief is the most important quality of all. If we could get a manager who infuses that belief into the team I really believe Roscommon have enough quality footballers to go a long way.

    But that's a big 'if'.

The identity of the new Roscommon senior football manager will be known next week. Special county board meeting on Wednesday next where it is expected that a name will be brought forward for ratification. Pat Flanagan current Padraig Pearses still in the running and if rumours are to believed current Ballymun manager Brendan Hackett and Davy Burke who led Kildare U20s to the 2018 All Ireland title are the other candidates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,088 ✭✭✭rn

I can't believe Pat Flanagan is still in the running, this long after Pearses knocked out. I think he was great for Pearses, but not inter County level.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Interesting County Final ahead. After a horrid morning rain, looks like it'll be clear for the game if wet greasy under foot. One would imagine a bigger more physical Strokestown will be more suited to the conditions, but who knows, it's all to play for. Hoping for a good game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,088 ✭✭✭rn

Good game, 6 apiece at half time. Very unfortunate serious injuries to boyle and Strokestown.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Decent game, somewhat marred and ruined as a spectacle in the first half by bad injuries to Brogan and McKeon, hopefully they recover quickly.

Tough defeat for Boyle. 2 very even teams that were nervy enough as the game wore on - Town just held their nerve a little better and Tony Lavin coming on and getting the ball twice, the second time kicking a winning point woth his weaker foot.

Some good performances, big men like Mullooley and Butler did trojan work for the winners, Enda had a big influence but waned a bit late on, Donie with an outrageous point from 55 yards to seemingly secure a draw was a highlight. I don't know who got MOTM but Colm Neary has to be in the running, he was brilliant throughout.

Strokestown v Tourlestrane in Connacht AFAIK, they won't care this evening, but a winnable tie of they can dry out for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,398 ✭✭✭megadodge

Although I was officially neutral, I was honestly hoping for a Boyle win. Not that I begrudged Strokestown.

It was good for football in the county to have two northern sides in the final and that was reflected in the attendance. It was the biggest crowd I ever saw at a Roscommon County Final.

After the torrential rain in the morning, it turned into a perfect day for football. No wind, no rain, perfect pitch. It was a little greasy early on, but after that twas fine. The first half was full of really good football, but unfortunately the two injuries dampened the mood a bit. I honestly think McKeown's loss was huge for Boyle. I really believe he would have contributed in the second half, especially towards the end when Boyle lacked an outlet up front and someone capable of finishing off moves.

The second half was very tense but all the excitement was crammed into the last 10 minutes. I was sure Ollie (who actually had a good game) was going to blow up after Donie's massive equaliser, but he didn't and Mullooly made a fantastic burst which caused the overlap which finished with the winner.

Young Neary was just outstanding. What a prospect! He did get the MOM award and nobody was surprised.

Anyway, well done Strokestown. Hard luck Boyle.

It's the winner of Mayo or Galway champion in the semi final. One of Salthill, Moycullen (managed by a Rossie Don Connellan) Westport or Ballina.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

    OK, I stand corrected.

Don't think they'll make much impression either way, from what I hear there are a couple of lads moving away in the coming weeks so it's not a priority. Shouldn't take away from yesterday's win though.

    Davy Burke it is.

    Mark McHugh as coach apparently.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,080 ✭✭✭blowitupref

Looks like the best choice of 3 candidates. McHugh is interesting choice of coach. I Presume the selectors will be rossies.

Eddie Lohan confirmed as one, some rumours about others but nothing official yet, better to wait for confirmation I guess.

Backroom team critical, S&C and all areas of gameplay really, both defensive organisation and team attack play.

Rome wasn't built in a day, and a tough D1 campaign ahead. Win 2 games is probably the realistic target, and build during the group stages of the championship. It's a 3 year deal, and it might take at least 2 of those 3 years to see realistic progress.

Patience required, good luck to Burke and his team.

Jesus lads, very quiet tonight. Not much excitement after a good league win.

Good overall performance. Looked dodgy early in the second half when Tyrone got a run on is and they left one great goal chance behind, but we recovered well and lots of the new lads showed well. Stood up well, forwards O Carroll and Cregg were very good, goalie had a good game and is an addition, the likes of Ciaran and especially Enda contributed well when introduced, but Niall Daly was truly outstanding I thought.

A great start to the league, another big test next week though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,398 ✭✭✭megadodge

You covered pretty much everything there.

Really important win both from the points earned and psychologically. That regular Roscommon thing of playing with far too much respect for their more illustrious opposition just has to be gotten rid of. The way Roscommon responded to the early 2nd half setback was fantastic. They simply played to win! They looked like they just didn't want to be denied. That's a proper winning mentality and with it great things can be achieved.

    C'mon the Rossies !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,283 ✭✭✭gucci

Great start to the campaign, hopefully can turn in another strong showing next week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,088 ✭✭✭rn

Galway won't be as bad as Tyrone. Amazing to think that team won an all-Ireland 2 years ago. The way they stood off us in last 10+6 mins, not like Tyrone we've battled before. Not to take away from our result. It was a very good performance, a perfect start to the league, the Davy Burke era and great introduction of new talent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,398 ✭✭✭megadodge

Good win in the end, when it looked like Roscommon might fall short despite all the possession they had.

Roscommon were by some way the better team - out the field - but in the first half a number of very poor shot selections and poor execution of final handpasses in the scoring zone meant they were down by two rather than up by a few at half-time.

For once there was no wind in Pearse Stadium and Roscommon completely dominated the second half, but until Ben O'Carroll and Ciarain Murtagh got involved they were struggling to convert their dominance onto the scoreboard. Those two were key to the success, both in constantly showing and getting on the ball and their finishing.

As a unit Roscommon defended very well. Galway never looked even remotely close to creating a goal chance and had to rely on a number of very soft frees in the first half to get their points. The defending without fouling and constant communication is very evident and long may it continue.

The kickouts in the first half were a bit of a problem. Galway really pushed up on our full-back line and forced Carroll to go long. We didn't win too many in the first half. Things improved the longer the game went and it appears that Roscommon are quite fit, as they've finished their two games full of running.

Finally, and I don't like being negative on a personal level, but I honestly think the whole Cox experiment has run its course. I have thought this for quite some time. He's simply not good enough and today showed that up again. We're not lacking quality forwards and I honestly don't see what he adds to the team; in fact he slows up the play and isn't knacky enough in one-on-one situations.
