Rightsideitis is a common enough issues but can be difficult to treat due to its complexity.

Only joking with the above comment 😂.

Well half joking really, as you seem to have a fair bit going on,.that may or may not be related. It's important to remember that there is no perfect running form, and people with less than aesthetic pleasing from can in fact produce phenomenal performances.

That said your running gait can have a huge influence how your muscles and joint react under load, especially when you place to demands of training for a marathon on it. Getting a coach to evaluate your gait might help the situation but that is something that is hard to do in the field with the naked eye. Unfortunately there isn't many place/people that do gait assessments with follow up corrective gait retraining.

While they're not run coach's (they're physios) the guys in Functional Patterns in Donabate were excellent when it comes to gait and corrective work. Well worth a shout imo

Very helpful, much appreciated. Will look into that suggestion. Or perhaps start running with a heavy weight in my left pocket!

jktherapy.ie Has been recommended to me in the past and is not far from you. In the end, I managed to sort the issue myself so I never met the guy, or have no knowledge of him other than his recommendation was from someone highly experienced. If you google him, he comes highly recommended in the reviews. Specialises in running assessment and treatment.

If anyone has been in Decathlon over the last couple of days do you know if they've a decent stock of their soft flasks?

Will be looking for 2x 250ml.

    Can call in there tomorrow.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,232 ✭✭✭Wottle

I ordered 2x250ml online from decathlon on the 17th, shipped from Germany (I think), they arrived yesterday.

I was there yesterday and the staff had opened a new box of soft flasks and were putting them out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,417 ✭✭✭Lazare

I got in there earlier and they had stock. There were a couple of dozen, and what looked like a new box below. Just in case anyone else needs them.

I've never used him myself, but friends of mine have and strongly recommend him. I know him from his mountain running exploits. An Irish international, and Irish champion. He knows running! I also have discussed general running form matters with him in the past and would have high regard for his knowledge and opinions.

  • Subscribers Posts: 689 ✭✭✭FlipperThePriest

Good to hear, I got the impression he was highly regarded alright.

Thanks lads. Going to book in with him after DCM. Can't wait tbh. Too many injuries wrecking too many marathon blocks.

Stupid question but I’ll ask anyway . Haven't been running with any real consistently for a while . ( circa 15 mikes a week ) If a person was to target a spring half - how do you gauge a goal time ? The buddies want to go back like we never stopped with the Saturday long runs etc . Seems a tad unrealistic to me being no spring chickens . Thoughts?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,578 ✭✭✭py

I would get to a parkrun, go all out and see what you come away with. You should be able to gauge your training paces for the block ahead to get you over the line for the half.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,021 ✭✭✭Kellygirl

Yep, I agree with Py. Use a Parkrun to get a time and then calculate training paces using the Tinman calculator or similar and go from there … and build up slowly!! Maybe factor in a race during the training block to gauge where you are then too?

  • Registered Users Posts: 490 ✭✭Butterbeans

As said above, a race or 2 is great way to gauge where you're at. Parkrun is perfect.

On jumping back into mileage you were previously doing for longer runs - build it up. Your buddies might have been running more consistently than you have. Be sensible about it, if it's a big jump, do some shorter solo longer runs or join the group for part of their run. Recipe for disaster doing too much too soon.

IMO a 5k now based on inconsistent training won't tell you too much regarding a spring half and probably adds more risk than reward.

A spring half is loads of time to train, if your running has been inconsistent use November to get that consistency back.

Build back in the frequency and then the mileage for each run, and add in a few strides and light sessions (6 x 1 min strides, etc) to get the legs turning over again.

Target a parkrun at the beginning of December to establish where you are and plan from there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,314 ✭✭✭Bluesquare

Thanks all . My plan then is to use November/December to build up weekly miles and “long” run miles . There is a local 5k mid December so will aim to use that to assess fitness and maybe take those Vaporflys out of the box finally ( a year later) .

Really random one! Hit the wall in the marathon but it wasn't the legs that went. I've experienced this one before when I was at my max exertion which is basically like a stitch under both sides of the rib cage. It's not like a side stitch more like like just pressure there and eventually I had to walk to relive it. Anyone else ever experience that or similar or what would it point to? Could it just be the Core/upper-abs giving in?

Looking for some pointers in the right direction please.

DCM was my second marathon - enjoyed it but won’t be doing a marathon next year. Hoping to maybe focus on 5k,10k and ‘maybe 10 mile instead next year.

Not a huge amount of experience running outside of the marathons - did both Marathons by following the novice boards plans and virtually all pacing was easy.

Ideally looking for some direction on good plans to follow with some explanations of speed work, threshold etc. for a newbie! Have done a bit of Googling and seeing a lot of advice for 10k to marathon but not the other way around. Thanks

This book is a great place to start. It has plans for all of the distances you've mentioned and covers the theory behind the different elements of training. I've followed plans from it several times over the years and found them challenging but great.

Anyone have any recommendations for coaches currently taking on new people?

Currently running with a club and while we have a coach he's mainly coaching a different club and is stretched a bit thin which means a lot of the sessions etc is very generically aimed at the whole club.

Ran a PB in Dublin but wasn't quite where I hoped to be so looking to change things up in the new year.

I know a few people running with Stazza but feel like the approach to marathon training wouldn't suit me, know a couple who were with Gary O Hanlon and not sure that's the right fit either.

You won't go far wrong with the advice @Kellygirl gives you.

There is also a DCM Graduate thread just started up which might help you on your journey post DCM.

I had visited him for treatment , and he is good. And he's generous with his time and explains everything. Ive put a running assessment on the long finger but i might book him this winter to get to see if i can improve my strike etc

  • Registered Users Posts: 49 Bgiraffe

Good to hear. I have booked in myself for the running assessment so looking forward to the process.

Has anyone a recommendation for caffeine gels?

I've used SIS previously 75mg of Caffeine for 60 ml size.

I was interested in the SIS double expresso which is 150mg of Caffeine but it's absolutely disgusting.

Also not a fan of Mautern.

  • Registered Users Posts: 583 ✭✭✭FinnC

Have you tried Kinetica? Irish brand. Sell them in SuperValu or online.

I use them for training, the caffeine Cola flavour is good. 100mg of Caffeine I think.

Thank you for the recommendation, I'll give them a try.

I'll have a search around for a discount code.

Similar price to SIS even thought they've a 50% off sale.

How heavy is the fenix 6? I'm still using my forerunner 225 so it's probably time for an upgrade

  • Registered Users Posts: 490 ✭✭Butterbeans

Not an answer to your question so apologies, but more a general question on watches and when/if upgrading is warrented.

I'm just curious, is there any issues with your watch or are you just looking for more data on a newer model? I guess that's a question for yourself and for anyone else on here too.

I have a forerunner 35, so definitely basic, but it works perfectly and is in good nick. It gives me all the info I need/want on the app. The one option I would like is for it to be able to upload tailored sessions, like a pyramid session for example, where each rep is different in length or duration than the last, but the model doesn't allow that, so I do it manually.

I suppose I'm asking in a long winded way, are the newer, or more indepth data features on new watches worth the upgrade, and what features do people find really useful?

Yeah. I've been saying I need to upgrade for years. One of the reasons is I went to add a route to the watch and couldn't do it. Mine also came out in 2015 so almost 8 years old now. Charge isn't great either.
