South tipp for a long time. Longer than I originally planned anyway, but Ireland got under my skin 😉, good way.

Packages supplied are certainly lower than here, ( but keep in mind cost of living), at the moment I'm lost a bit to find exact figures. I'll post when I get them.

Those lads that came here slept in the airport and then went to city west and were given protection status, then were told they have no beds and sent back to the airport.

I saw them quoting they "don't know what they will do"

Why can't they form into groups and pool together a few quid for a hotel room or some sort of cheap hostel until some sort of bed is sorted?

One lad said he bought a house 4 years ago and it was destroyed. We're being told these are educated people so surely they all had jobs if they were buying houses. There's money there for flights? Fair enough it's a bit expensive but how do none of these people have any money to provide anything for themselves.?

Surely all these teachers, newscasters, media workers, IT specialists, doctors, engineers etc... have a couple of quid disposable to them? Nobody has nothing in the current account or a bit of savings? I find it hard to believe.

Are they even being asked or are they just coming in expecting everything on a plate?

Thanks for the reply. I was just wondering what other countries are offering.

The cheek of that very underwhelming Ukrainian ambassador - insulting Ireland.

She should get the hell back to Kiev and see how she gets on there rather than dumping on Ireland’s efforts to house her own people coming here demanding houses

  • Registered Users Posts: 172 ✭✭Honesty Policy

I was looking at the report on RTE of the guys not being housed here. Is Amir a typical Ukrainian name??? (Serious question)!

    Very true.

she is extremely underwhelming with a terrible image and public speaking skills and then to top it off she starts insulting us for our efforts.

Let her on back to Kiev see how she gets on

I'd say Putin is delighted that people are now getting sick of uncapped refugee numbers entering their countries.

I don't like the way our politicians are embarrassed by the lack of accommodation for the Ukrainians but just don't seem to get it about us locals.

The ambassador should choose her words carefully the goodwill was always going to ease off as this war is going to last and it is terrible for the people. We have a government so eager to please the EU that all logic about numbers etc went out the window most of the average people have big cost of living issues which will get worse before they improve .But if your women mouths off any remaining goodwill will vanish and will cause problems .

Yeah he's loving it. The EU statelets speaking out of both sides of their mouths and squabbling amongst themselves. He could keep up sending his own cannon fodder into the fray for a long time yet.

The good news is he isnt winning, the bad news is neither is Ukraine.

Better discussion for the main thread on Russia. FWIW, various military types have already said Ukraine's won.

I doubt he is delighted. He has completely unified the EU and upped NATO membership by 2, one being his neighbour.

That's before we even mention the protracted war he can't win or the fact that Russia are now a pariah nation.

    Happiness is relative I suppose.

    🤷‍♂️

Amir sounds Middle Eastern not Ukrainian to me

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,010 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

The hilarious irony being, what she actually said was it was unacceptable that the information wasn't telegraphed that Ireland had no available accommodation and Ukrainians shouldn't travel here, a sentiment that has prevailed on here from day one.

But yeah bloody mouthy woman agreeing with us. 😂

You seem like good person, but no offense you seem a little out of touch about what we have done.

per capital we give one of highest Foreign aids year in year out. We have taken in many people fleeing war. Our problem is that we are taking in too many people who are not though. That comes at a serious price.

some of the countries you refer to might be happy to take in Ukraine people but they sure ain’t as welcoming to people of different colour or religion that is for sure. They are entitled to do that if people feel that way but it’s unfair to label Ireland in same sentence when simply not true.

RTE news states, at a meeting last week with the ambassador, it was flagged then that accommodation would soon become problematic. On Thursday, Roderic O' Gorman stated, the centre at City West was reaching capacity. Early Friday morning, Irish Media were announcing capacity had been reached. The message did make its way to the Embassy, as they released a statement on their website early Friday morning advising same.

What is not acceptable to many Irish Citizens, is a high level representative of the Ukrainian community coming out with what could be considered as an ungrateful and criticising statement of Ireland's strong humanitarian response to the fleeing refugees.

I'd have no problem with all the International Protection seeking males being rounded up and bunked up in some warehouse with proper security and sanitary facilities for a few months while their claims are being processed. They can be offered the option of a flight back to wherever if they realise they actually weren't in danger in their home country. It will also give them an incentive to provide information quickly to verify their legitimate claims. Put up a few big sheds out at Thornton Hall and bring them up to habitable standards

Not ideal, but needs must. That would be the non-Ukrainians. The Ukrainians already have permission to stay here temporarily.

As far as I am aware there are ex asylum seekers who are granted permission to stay and work who still live in Direct Provision. They are taking up spaces too. That should be, at the very least, discouraged.

We have to provide for the Ukrainians as best we can for as long as they keep coming. The whingers have to accept that and get over it. We also have to process asylum seekers.

    Friday morning? Super notice.

The "criticism" was this wasn't announced weeks ago.

The exact same thing people have been saying on here, but when that 'bloody ungrateful bítch' -sic says it. The same people are crying wambulance, you couldn't write it. 😂

Very wrong to not put a limit on the number we as a country could accept.

What sort of support are arrivals getting in other EU states why the huge appeal to come to Dublin. I can't imagine any other state is/was giving as much upon arrival as Ireland has been. Has anywhere else allowed pets to be brought in sans quarantine?

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,433 ✭✭✭✭Donald Trump

I think that is all in under the Directive. So likely uniform across the states. We don't have that many here. There is just a lot of them everywhere. Or at least a lot of them in lots of countries. It is some sort of paranoia that they are all mad to come here

  • Registered Users Posts: 315 ✭✭CeCe12

How could it be announced weeks ago? The numbers arriving are constantly fluctuating and not predictable.

Well we surely won't see anymore people stranded, now that the issue has been sufficiently highlighted.

Huh? The overall number was ever increasing, which by definition is predictable.

Not a hope that will happen.

bigger chance of NGOs saying they got it wrong

  • Registered Users Posts: 315 ✭✭CeCe12

You yourself are a member of the squeeze them all in brigade, that call for us to continue to accept people we can not currently provide for.

The numbers are constantly changing, mass accommodation cannot magically appear at the drop of hat or within a couple of weeks.

Anymore arriving now, knowing the state of the accommodation right now have no one else to blame. Larysa should concentrate on what is best for her citizens not biting the hand that literally feeds them. What kind of message does that send out?

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,133 ✭✭✭✭iamwhoiam

What she actually said was “ the lack of accommodation for Ukrainians was unacceptable “

The Ukrainian Ambassador to Ireland has said the lack of accommodation for Ukrainian refugees coming to Ireland is "unacceptable"

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,133 ✭✭✭✭iamwhoiam

Maybe instead of complaining she could have opened the embassy for her citizens and fed them . But no she left that to a charity who are already overwhelmed

  • Registered Users Posts: 315 ✭✭CeCe12

I agree. The Capuchin centre do an amazing job helping people. I'm curious to see over the coming week if more people arrive to nothing. That person should really be leading by example and stop the finger pointing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 34,119 ✭✭✭✭The_Kew_Tour

tbf I do think the Ukraine Ambassador has a point. It is unacceptable, the problem is she should be having a go at NGOs who are happy to stand up for the bogus claims while genuine people fleeing war are being left behind.

this was always going to happen. A blind man could see where we were going but the good of NGOs got their way. The funny thing is they still will never be happy. Just blame blame blame somebody else while they spread their horseshit around.

I can tell you, pets are supposed to be vaccinated upon entry to Ireland and then mandatory quarantine for 14 days. This is to guard against Rabies as Ireland has been Rabies free for 100 years.

I see the guy from the RTE story has a cat with him. I don't know if the cat has been previously vaccinated or if the services weren't present upon his arrival, but quarantine should still apply in either case.

What I simply cannot fathom is how our government is “deeply concerned” about 33 Ukrainians not having accommodation meanwhile there are thousands of our own citizens homeless who they could not, and have never gave a single toss about. Our own flesh and blood suffering while we move the moon and the stars for complete strangers.
