I think she is trying to do the "exotic" accents that the Essos people have.

Not that it matters a lot but I've thrown in the towel on this series. Eps 7, the funeral scene; was the last straw. It was so dull, full of needless longeurs and frankly annoying (was the script writer off sick?) As for the characters, I could not give a toss if they lived or died, none of them grabbed me in any shape or form.

I protest too much but hey ho. Good luck!

    Yeah that was my thinking.

Yer man kinda promised the queen.

My bigger question on that scene was ..

who was the person walking away from the fire.. seemed all black masked out for hiding effect

you think i can spell their names? (or the rest of my hastefully written post.)

Damn good series tbf and I really didn't expect it given the state of GoT Season 8 (gave the whole thing a miss until 2 days ago when I was out sick from wok and binged it). The writing reminds me of the earlier seasons of GoT in a good way - I imagine George RR Martin had a decent amount of involvement as opposed to the later seasons of GoT. Also the cast are excellent - Paddy Considine in particular fully deserves an Emmy for his performance as Viserys.

Overall I'm far happier with this series than I thought I'd be, and I'm looking forward to the next episode and the next season. I'm glad something has the chance to redeem Westeros as a big budget setting!

    When is the next series?

Yeah, and at this stage Rhaenys knows that for Rhaenyra to take the crown, they're going to need support. If Rhaenys had killed Aegon (and even all who were on the stage), Aegon was already proclaimed King which would mean succession would fall to his eldest child. The better course of action would be to call into question Aegon's coronation itself, and that they're going against Viserys' naming of Rhaenyra as his heir in order to steal the crown.

Rhaenys appears to be very well regarded throughout the Seven Kingdoms, and is essentially the head of Driftmark etc. She's as much of a danger to Team Green using her political position. By backing Rhaenyra's claim, she can have a huge influence in the battle for the throne. If she'd just torched them with her dragon, I think it would have turned huge swathes of the Kingdoms against Rhaenyra's claim, which is already tenuous with a lot of the Houses of Westeros.

I don't think has any legitimate children, the one eyed brother said he was next in line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,386 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Weren't there children in the room with Heleana and a maid took them out of the room before Alicent broke the news of Visery's death to her? I presumed they were her and Aegon's children.

I think Aemond the brother was remarking about he was next in line as Aegon's younger brother but would have made for a better King and always took more interest in their lessons and stuff than Aegon.

He has two children with his wife/sister doesn't he? I'm not sure if they are boys or girls though.

I missed until now that Aegon the terrible had married his sister & had kids. All this changing of actors is confusing.

Urgh. I really find the incest hard to stomach.

Won't be for a few years, it hasn't even started production yet. They only announced it had been renewed when we were two or three episodes into this one.

And seriously, folks, can we ditch the spoiler tags? They're cumbersome and completely unnecessary, imo. Anyone stupid enough to come into the thread before they've watched a given episode has only themselves to blame if something gets spoiled.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,625 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Yeah I don't think we should need spoilers for anything that has aired... if someone has found something out online OR bringing content in from the book that's different... and the latter shouldn't really be here.

The fella at the end is one of Larys' lads with the tongues cut out. You can see he's wearing the broach with the firefly sigil on it.

You just need to pay closer attention I think. Them being betrothed was brought up in the funeral scene at Driftmark.

  • Registered Users Posts: 580 ✭✭✭Apothic_Red

Rhaneys (???), the one on the dragon, why was she still in Kings Landing ?

Didn't her son get beheaded in the last episode, think she would have buggered off quick step.

Cole killing the guy at the high council made no sense either, he gets away with everything

Thought Rhaneyays (?) was due back on dragonback, in GOT shed of been back in 5 mins

Why did Varys lock up all the staff in the beginning ?

I need to start paying more attention

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,970 ✭✭✭✭Dial Hard

I'm convinced some people watch this show with their head in their phones.

It really does require close attention, and more than one viewing, imo.

Rhaenys was still in King's Landing as she wasn't travelling with Rhaenyra. She arrived in KL before Rhaenyra and was likely going to be leaving in the next day or so. However, it wasn't her son who was killed, it was her brother-in-law (her husband's brother). He (Vaemond) was attempting to take control of Driftmark which would essentially cast Rhaenys and her grandchildren (the legitimate ones her daughter had with Daemon) out. There was little to no love lost there with his death, even though she may not have wanted him dead/killed.

Cole killing the guy was definitely out of nowhere, but I'm not sure the intention was to kill (he slammed the guys head down on the table, but it was the ball thing they place in the tables which would have caused the slam to be fatal). Regardless, he's protected because the guy was going to act against the Hightowers, and to back Rhaenyra's claim and make her Queen before Otto and Alicent could have Aegon crowned.

Rhaenyra was due back on dragonback, however they had only just left and she was sailing back to Dragonstone with her kids. The events of this episode all took place during the course of a few hours. She doesn't even know of Viserys' death yet, and they had only left that night after the meal.

Varys locked up the staff because some of them knew Viserys had died, so they were trying to prevent any of the staff from revealing that before Otto & Alicent could plan for Aegon to be King. Though Talia (one of Alicent's maids who was a spy for the White Worm woman who had Aegon) had already signalled to her about Viserys' death by lighting the candles in the window (this isn't stated, but is the likely reason we were shown her putting those candles in the window and lighting them, and we saw her talking with the White Worm towards the end of the last episode).

It's about 4 days by ship from King's Landing to Dragonstone. And 6 hours flight on a Dragon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,292 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

4 days seems a lot for an Island in Blackwater Bay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,807 ✭✭✭Evade

Medieval ships only travelled at a speed barely above a brisk walking pace so 4 days' travel isn't that much distance from a modern perspective.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,292 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Ya I forget that Westeros is a continent not a European sized country (size of South America according to GRRM).

Blackwater Bay would be massive in that case especially seeing as Dragonstone can't be seen from Kings Landing (which sometimes doesn't even have a bay 🤣)

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,391 ✭✭✭PhiloCypher

Tbh I assumed it was Otto following through on his promise and burning the building that was holding the underage UFC tournament to the ground.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,391 ✭✭✭PhiloCypher

There are multiple possibilities as I see it.

    1. They were going to close the doors and lock her in so she didn't have time.
    2. She saw Alicent protecting Aegon and having lost(she thinks) both her adult children she didn't want to do the same to Alicent(tho alicent would have died with them of course)
    3. Shes hedging her bets incase Rheneyra loses the war, so she can say I spared you and your families life.

Helena did warn Alicent that there's a beast under the boards

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

Ah! Of course! I forgot about them a bit too quick!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,292 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Everything she says is a spoiler. She has some sort of prescient vision that none of the family seem to have picked up on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,657 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Your last question is the answer to your first question.

But mostly you probably aren't paying attention.

She was still there because when the king died, they stopped people from leaving. That was her brother in law not her son. Her Son fled for Essos a few episodes ago.

Cole got away with killing him because the old guy was vocally opposed to their treason. They were openly discussing murdering Rhaenyra and her kids. Murder of a Lord is a lesser crime at that point.

The King died the night she left. She'd still only be half way back my now. Rhaenys will most likely catch up with them and arrive at Dragonstone around the same time. I'd guess that will be the opening of the next episode.

Was that not where Rhaneys had been lodging? I had assumed the burning building was to show that she was smuggled out just before she was to be murdered.

Well saw the finale, it's nicely set up for season 2.

I've enjoyed this season, looked forward to it every Monday so that's the best compliment I could pay it, script is a bit ropey but some absolutely stellar performances as you'd expect with GOT.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,495 ✭✭✭Homelander

Yeah it was a decent finale, not sure why but Matt Smith felt off that episode to me.

As above, looked forward to it immensely every Monday, will be missed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,292 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Na that definitely wasn't anywhere someone royal was staying.

I had assumed it was the child fighting ring but the Worms house makes the most sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,292 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Ok I know we said no spoilers but how about we make an exception till Monday for people who don't know the finale was leaked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,707 ✭✭✭Citizen Six

Rhaneys room looked out to an internal courtyard/staircase. And was in the red keep I think. As she's escaping, you can see the fire lower down in King's Landing. The next scene then pans from the Red Keep in the distance, to a closer shot of the burning building.

  • Registered Users Posts: 322 ✭✭pjcb

they must be forever repairing that bridge.

  • Registered Users Posts: 580 ✭✭✭Apothic_Red

    Watched the finale:

Was expecting it to be Dragon Nuclear War, pleasantry surprised.

Obv Alicent vs Ryneary for S2 but great stuff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,800 ✭✭✭FortuneChip

A cheeky little Dragon Pad to either side would be a welcome addition. Or just have the brooding showdowns somewhere else.

That the first time we've seen Storm's End in GOT? Seems a suitable name.

Have to say the climatic scenes were superb, from a narrative POV as well as visually.

Strong finale to a very good season. Exceeded my expectations anyway.

Top performances all round - it's a shame we're already losing out on some of the cast in Season 2, namely Milly Alcock, Paddy Considine, and Ty Tennant, who I thought was an absolute riot as Aegon for his few episodes.

Wow - That was an wonderful ending to the season - I was very involved in the episode, moreso than I have any of the others - I put my head in my hands at the chomp!

Watched on a stream cast to my tv and the quality was poor but you could still tell the visual quality was superb.

Was Aemond not happy at what happened? did vhagar jut get thick and wouldnt obey coz he got a box in the jaw??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 853 ✭✭✭duffysfarm

i think aemond wanted to do something but i dont think he wanted to do that. before the fight there was officially no war. now there is no turning back and i think he realised that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,810 ✭✭✭Mr Velo

Yep that's exactly what happened. Both of them lost control of their dragons, Arrax firstly drew fire on Vhagar (Lucerys could be heard shouting "no Arrax, obey me". Vhagar then went rogue on Aemond and the rest is history.

All harks back to King Viserys warning in episode 1 where he told Rhaenyra: “The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion. They're a power men should never have trifled with"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,386 ✭✭✭✭Penn

A strong finale to the season for sure. GoT regularly went with the big showpiece episode as Episode 9, and a bit of a slower episode dealing with the aftermath and setting up the next season as the finale. This pretty much followed suit, with last episode about the Greens stealing the throne and this episode setting the stage for the war to come.

Emma Darcy was terrific this episode. Matt Smith also felt a bit off to me. I get that he's chomping at the bit to take the throne, but for someone who seemed so smart and calculated he just felt very reckless this episode. Great to see Corhys survived, really like the actor and character. Rhaenyra's sons, especially the one who died, were great. Aemond is a hell of a find though, his character is absolutely perfect.

What was Daemon doing with the dragon in the cave, and whose dragon is it? Is he trying to claim Viserys' or Laenor's dragon since they're gone?

So, do Damon and Rhaenyra have any children together now?

I can't keep count of all the kids..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,800 ✭✭✭FortuneChip

Previously Rhaenyra had two boys, and Daemon had two girls.

And together they'd two more boys, Aegon & Viserys

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,386 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Well, previously Rhaenyra had three boys (there's a younger 'Strong' son, Joffrey, who was born when Emma Darcy took over the role).

Now, she only has two boys pre-Daemon...

That's Vermithor, the dragon of King Jaehaerys (grandfather to Viserys and Rhaenys). I'm guessing since he's riderless, Daemon singing is part of how they find a rider and Vermithor getting used to humans again.
