    Sounds like a tinder alternative.

Nice replacement for pumps, I wish I could update prices without being physically at the station.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭rockhead006

You can update within 250km of the station. Is this not enough?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,835 ✭✭✭horse7

    You sure I could,not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,835 ✭✭✭horse7

It's something to do with browser/settings/privacy etc.

Bit awkward changing location having to move the marker across the map..it automatically thinks your web provider is your location

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭rockhead006

When you first open the website/app, it asks if you want to permit telling it your location. If you decline this, then it falls back your ISPs location.

This is a choice, if you decline this, and the station you are trying to update is more than 250km away from your ISP, then you won't be able to update prices for a station.

If you want to change this permission (to allow location sharing), I believe you can go into the app settings (for Android), or the website settings (for browser).

If you see a small circle button on the bottom left, try clicking it to get your current location.

Android App - Samsung Galaxy S22

I can't change the prices to be able to update the prices.

If I tap on the numbers, I get the keyboard. I type a number and if flashes, but remains the same. So I can't update prices.

Cheapest isnt all ways the best as there is alot of yellow pack fuel out there that you only get 5 miles to the gallon so you want to be posting about quality as well call out those stations profiting out of your misery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,261 ✭✭✭Gant21

How does a end user provide accurate data of fuel purchased? I would safely say your 5mpg is pub talk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,294 ✭✭✭homingbird

I have bought from stations & only got down the road & had a big drop in fuel. We all been told of stations to stay away from.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,915 ✭✭✭masterboy123

True that. Many duplicate pumps in Limerick area.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,835 ✭✭✭horse7

What are the colour codes in the map for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭rockhead006

Do you mean the colour of the markers/fuel stations?

This depends on your search settings on the list page. The fuel stations at the top (3) of the list will be green, then I believe orange (next 3), then yellow (next 4) then red (next 10), the remaining ones are grey.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭rockhead006

Oh, and the ones with a heart in them are added favourite places.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭rockhead006

Correct. The stations are gathered from Google data, and Google has a lot of old places still.

As with the fuel prices, I need you all to notify me about duplicate stations. This is not a job I could easily do myself. You can click on an invalid station, click the Report link and select Duplicate from the list.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭rockhead006

Are you saying this is low quality fuel? E.g. 95 octane Vs 97 or 98? I'm not sure how easily this information could be added.

If you all think it would be a good feature, I could add some ratings/stars to a station for fuel quality and other things. I could also allow users to add comments/notes, but that can get messy with spammers. If you all comment what you'd like I can look into adding new features.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭rockhead006

Do you get the same functionality in the web browser as the app? Have you ever been able to update a price in the app and/or website?

Nearly always this is "pub talk" as most people don't realise that all fuel is literally identical except for the additive some put in as a marketing ploy to get people to pay extra. The only thing that can be different is if the tanks are old and not serviced properly, but that would be very rare due to regulations

If a station is getting fuel from whitegate, (Irving oil owners of TOP) the tankers literally line up and it makes no difference what livery is on the tanker you simply fill up in turn. In Dublin Applegreen took over the Topaz/Esso share in a storage facility. Valero (Texaco) are the other 50% owner. Irving Oil also have facilities in Dublin. Most fuel sold in Leinster comes from one of these two facilities. Delivery is usually by companies such as Camp freight, Reynolds or DHL Energy. Circle K have facilities in Dublin airport (jet fuel) & Galway.

Basically oil is refined into petrol & diesel in huge quantities. The fuel tankers can carry ten of millions of refined fuel and they simply unload into whatever storage facility required. It is then distributed to fuel stations. So before any marketing additives are added, ALL fuel is absolutely identical.

So adding a section for people to make defamatory statements because they heard something from some drunk in a pub on on some karen's social media page, would not be conducive to good business

There aren't 4 stations at that location on Google Maps though

I've not tried using a web browser.

I've never been able to update the fuel prices on the app. I click on the price and the keyboard appears. I type a number and the box flashes (refreshes) but the value doesn't change.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,294 ✭✭✭homingbird

If fuel is all the same ask the filling stations that have four prices up for there fuel. regular & super its wide ope to take advantage of you i can only tell you of what i experienced & others told me of stations to stay away from.

I did some updates around Limerick, removing duplicate stations. Not sure how Fine Wines managed to sell fuel! :-D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭rockhead006

If you zoom right in on the station (like the most you can do) you'll see the other stations on Google Maps.

All the data from Google is current, it's just that they don't remove/add these places on the maps, it's the companies/owners that usually add them, and they don't often bother to remove them if the close or change owner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭mikeecho

No need for a review or star rating of stations.

Silly comments by users, will get the Dev in a spot of bother.

Keep it simple, pumps , was good in its day, and it just did the basics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 616 ✭✭✭EarWig

Yes, you can just imagine a comment about the fuel somewhere being dodgy.

How do you cover the legal risks.

Comments would also probably attract contributors who may have a political angle that would spill over into prices posted. We saw this already earlier in the year.

Down the road (excuse the pun) , a feature detailing what services are at each station.

Lpg, elec charging, toilets, ATM, pay at pump, car wash , open 24hr, etc etc.

But that's something that can be looked at in the future maybe.

After you put in your price you needed to press the big green square button that says update prices.

Yes, but it won't let me put in the price! That's the problem. I try and change the price and it ignores what I type. There is no problem submitting the price, but since I can't change it, I'm just submitting the existing price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,241 ✭✭✭rameire

Ah OK. I had the initial issue of not pressing the green button and was wondering why it wasn't updating.

Is there any chance you can send me a screen record/video of when it fails for you.

You can drag down the menu from the top of your phone, and look for Screen Recorder.

    Thanks

Really loving the app, trying to keep fuel prices up to date is challenging at the moment, prices definitely going up again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭rockhead006

Thanks. We need more users using it and updating it.

I think most people still use Pumps.ie, even though it's no longer maintained, and lots of the fuel stations are wrong or missing.

If I had more active users, I spend more time developing pumphunt. But I'll keep it running either way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,835 ✭✭✭horse7

Definitely, please update the prices, even if you just remember to update one after your journey please do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,835 ✭✭✭horse7

I've been trying to add a station that's not on the map, 4 actually, 2 on the M1 Lusk, and 2 near julianstown, all apple green stations. No reply from contact at pumphunt.

Not trying to be mean or the usual Irish begrudger here, but I’m not sure how this app will be a success.

I tried it a few months ago and there were no stations at all listed in New Ross, a town of 8,000 people with a hinterland of 3 counties. Am I going to bother adding the 8 or so stations around New Ross for free? No.

I’ve been using Waze. It’s reliable, gives me navigation and alerts, gps speedo. I can log into it with my Google account. I can use it all over Europe to find stations and get prices.

More importantly, it has a lot of users.

With Google maps allowing stations to add their prices and Waze getting more popular, I just don’t think there is space for a dedicated fuel price app.

    You are probably right.

There was a lack in the market when I first made the app/website, as Pumps.ie was no longer being maintained/updated.

And Google was doing nothing for fuel prices (I don't really see many prices on their app now, but this may expand in the future).

I've not got Waze, so don't know how many prices they have updated. But they have a lot more users than PumpHunt, so if users can be bothered to update prices on Waze, then it would be better.

I had a look at New Ross, and there are stations listed, looks to be about 8. I do have to commit more time to user station updates (e.g. new stations, changes, deleting duplicates, etc), but I think it's fairly accurate. The list of stations was gathered from Google Maps initially.

There are some bugs in the app/website. Where if you open the app/website from one location and drive more than 100km away from that location, it will not list any new stations. So you need to close and re-open the app/website for them to show.

Regarding PumpHunt, what does everyone else think? Should I shut it down?

I was going to give it 1 year to test it out (as cheap domain name for 1st year).

In fairness to you, they are there now. Unfortunately, for me at the time it was enough to stop me using app and use an alternative.

The success of may apps/sites technologies is down to Metcalfe’s Law. In short, the more users something has, the moser useful it will be.

There are still several stations visible at the same location at Dock Road / Shannon Bridge end in Limerick where only one exists. This was cleaned up months ago, but they seem to have come back

Is there an email for support pumphunt?

I have used the contract us, but never a reply. I tried to add applegreen stations , without success, 2 on the M1 Lusk, north and south,. 2 at julianstown on each side of the road, petrol at 185.8 , diesel at 206.8 all stations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭rockhead006

Ok, I've gone through all the requested new/updated station requests now. Hopefully it it's done the ones you wanted.

I use Google Maps Street view to confirm is a station is actually where someone says it is. As sometimes they are submitted in the middle of no where, or there is already a station there in my app.

I'm thinking of adding a text box onto that page for users to include notes, e.g. "Station is new, not yet on Google Maps Street view". What do you think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,835 ✭✭✭horse7

Thanks you have indeed added/updated many stations, but none of the applegreen I've submitted/ mentioned in my post, you'll see them on Google maps.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,835 ✭✭✭horse7
