Private burial site

I am not sure if this is a planning question or where I should ask, or if it is even feasible.

We have a few acres of former hillside grazing land which we have planning permission to build on.

There will be approx 4 acres behind the house.

I plan to plant a bit of an orchard on some of this, most of it will be left as hillside grazing for sheep etc.

I am not interested in being buried at a grave, leaving a remote place that people feel they have to visit when i am gone.

I would prefer to be somewhere I love and if people visit it would be somewhere nice.

We have areas with beautiful scenic views in private settings, are there restrictions on ashes being buried / scattered or a body

Burial? Maybe (see below), but I'd imagine it would devalue the property. Who wants to buy a house with the previous resident in situ?

Scattering ashes much better idea.

The Planning and Development Acts are the legislation that cover burials on private lands. I seen this once in the past and I was highly impressed with the grave and immediate surrounding area as it was well laid out and done to the deceased's request. No permission required for ashes that I'm aware of.

The biggest problem that particular family faced was getting a priest to perform the burial service. They had to settle for a chaplain but that's a story for another day.

In death it is no longer about you. It is about your loved ones and how they want to remember you and where they want to visit you. Leave the planning to them, it won’t make the slightest difference to you.

What happens to a grave when the ownership passes into new owners, presumably they could get it removed and reburied or more probably just let it disappear .

Even nuns graves in convents ( and they would have thought that they were there forever after their lives) subsequently ended up being dug up and re interred in town graveyard when convent was sold to developers

Even if you manage to do this the issue will be that the land won't necessarily always be in your family. New owners may not be happy with random people coming to visit their property.

It happened to a family I know - they spread grandads ashes over a tree in his back yard. A few years later the house was sold and now the best they can do to visit grandad is drive by the old house

Its a silly idea you have OP. Your loved ones will no doubt like to visit your grave after your dead and put flowers on and maintain it. How will they visit your grave if someone else owns the property? Graveyards dont have to be remote as you put it.

If you wish to be cremated your family can keep the ashes or scatter them on your property or in some public place. If they scatter the ashes though there is no dedicated place for you to be remembered which I think is the downside to cremation - it suits some though.

Im lucky in that I can still visit the graves of my great great grandparents. We still maintain their grave and I do get a sense of peace and where I came from when I visit their grave. If you opt for a grave you will be remembered by future generations which I am sure will be important to them.

Great idea OP. Its a bit of poor hillside grazing that is unlikely to get future planning permission. Its not like its a garden on a Council Estate.

While I would agree with you, having been through deaths and burials including unexpected ones I've found it helps if the loved ones know what the deceased prefers, it cuts out the second guessing at a time that there is a lot going on.

Never going to happen where I am talking, its backland, completely cut off from any road, elevated at the crest of a hill, rocky, with elevated bedrock, not arable land from a farming perspective
