    You will be rostered to work every second weekend, Sunday Pay is based on attendance so if you are sick or on annual leave you won't get it.

    Divide your point on the scale by 35 to get hourly rate then multiply by 12 to get the value for a Sunday.

    Bank Holiday pay is slightly different in that its based on it you are rostered on or off.. Rostered off 21% of basic weekly rate, rostered on 28% of basic weekly rate. Paid irregardless if worked or not...

    The role is probably one of the best paid CO roles going. You will be on a par with the EO scale on the shift allowance alone... You will also carry this on promotion so you will benefit from it there aswell. The Sunday and Bank Holiday premiums are not reckonable for promotion just the shift.

    The job does have its negatives but also its positives... I did it for years and loved it being honest I did fall out of love with it to a point and it became time to move.. But that was down to many factors.

    It opens doors for promotion, it's interesting and varied work with no 2 days being the same.. as cheesy as it sounds it is true.

    There aren't many other CS roles as interesting or varied.. Part of the reason people push to get back there on promotion!

    @emcfarl i was 14 after test for interview then placed at 11 after interview. I'd say there be a lot of late drop offs from the list and also considering the place is a revolving door as per the messages here ... your number will come soon.

    @cw67irl There is a clause in the booklet which states :

    Staff retained beyond the initial probation period (of 12 months) minimum period are required to then serve a minimum of 3 years at the airport, unless promoted.

    So does that mean that after 2 years as an ICO (1 year probation 1 year service) one cannot apply for internal civil service competitions in other departments? Because correct me if I am worng, it is usually after 2 years a civil servant at any role can apply for internal competitions. Could you or anyone please clarify.

    The restriction applies to things like mobility, secondment or visa offices essentially anything at the same grade. You can move on internal competitions once you meet the requirements for the competition and move on open anytime.

    To move elsewhere as a CO you would have to come off an open panel to escape the contract so to speak.

    @emcfarl I am assuming it will be at the airport. Excerpt from the ICO Info Booklet in regards to Training...

    "Officers will be required to undergo a combination of online, classroom-style training and on-the-job coaching and mentoring for a period of several weeks. Candidates will need to be available for the duration of this training period. A shift roster and a shift rate of pay will not apply to this or any such period of assignment. Office hours, Monday to Friday will apply. Performance during training and mentoring will be considered in the context of the probation process".

    One thing which doesn't sit easy is the use of the wording "Several Weeks".

    How long is a piece of string?

    @cw67irl Do you know how long the training go on for. Several weeks as stated in the ICO booklet doesn't give much away. What I am trying to get to at is roughly how long before one is operational on shifts so to speak.

    Hi, does anyone have any idea of what number they are up to now in terms of taking people forward for appointment? I placed 97 after the interview - just wondering how long it could take, if ever.

    I was placed 29 after interview and got called for vetting 3 weeks later (1st Nov 22). Currently waiting on Extra Security Clearance which they said can take up to 16 weeks.


    Anyone know what the training consists of?

    Generally it's classroom format for a couple of weeks that will include some days observing in the Airport. Then you will be assigned to your teams and given a mentor to work with you and bring from the classroom phase onto the job and get you operational so to speak

    Thank you. Are the classes based in the Airport itself? I'd be commuting so handy to know the training venue in advance. In Customs, we did most of our training in an external training branch, then the rest in the Port. It's a tough decision to switch from my current post to Immigration but hopefully it will be the right move.

    Is anybody here currently in the BMU and can give accurate and helpful feedback before I make the move?

    I did my training in an airport Hotel, there are some days on site aswell, I'm not sure what the current training plan is for this group although there aren't really a lot of training rooms available on the airport campus so hotel conference facilities are the norm...


    I doubt you will get too many current BMU staff posting on here but im only recently gone from it so if you want to send me specific questions il answer anything you need.

    Thanks so much, I appreciate that. I am torn at the moment because this thread seems to have mixed reviews and I'm worried I would be leaving a handy number in Customs for a job that I might regret taking, however I specialise in Immigration so I'm eager to get into a role in that field.

    Do you mind me asking, did you leave because of the job conditions or for personal reasons (no disclosure needed obviously)?

    What would a typical day consist of?

    What is the best and worst part of the job?
