Metallic Silhouette Shooting Competition- Fermoy Range- This Sunday 13th November

    The National Silhouette Shooting Association of Ireland is running a classification shoot on the Fermoy Rifle Club's range next Sunday and all licenced target shooters are welcome to take part. The range is open from 9:00 a.m. and one hour is allowed for zeroing, practise and familiarisation. The competition commences at 10:00 a.m. and last entries will be taken at 12:30. This competition uses .22LR target Velocity ammunition.

    Those of you who have not been to the club before can locate the range using the following information:

    EIRCODE P51 E951

    Address Ballydague,Ballyhooley,Fermoy,Co.Cork

    This is a great opportunity to see a formal competition taking place and to take part yourself. The fastest way to improve skills is to practise and to watch and learn from more experienced shooters.

    At what distances are the silhouettes placed.

    The chickens are at 40m followed by the pigs at 60m, the turkeys at 77m and finally the rams at 100m. 10 animal silhouettes at each distance for a maximum score of 40.

    Remember, elevation varies slightly from rifle to rifle, especially dependent on ammo. Windage depends on the day. Target sizes are as follows:

    • Chicken (2 1/2in. x 2 1/4in.), 1 Turkey (4in. x 4 1/2in.), 1 Pig (4 1/2in. x 3in.) and 1 Ram (6 1/2in. 5 1/4in.)

    Those of you who are interested in long range .22Lr shooting, may find shooting silhouettes a good introduction to handling windage and elevation adjustments. The main difference is that the long range competitions are shot rested, whereas the sill competitions are shot standing up. Real shooting!

    I should add to the above comments that the type and weight of rifle you use does not matter. There are different classes which take into account the different types of rifle. There is also a seated class which is shot sitting down, with elbows rested on a table.

    Absolutely, thoroughly enjoyed the shooting, despite the terrible weather. Fermor are great hosts, welcoming, eager to learn a new, to many of them, discipline, and loads of BBQ and food! Thanks Fermoy Rifle Club!!
