There was plenty to talk about otherwise. He could have commented on the amazing performances of the son and mam. Talked about would coming first in hanging tough save them from the eliminator. Not realising, or pretending not to realise, for 2 minutes after it was apparent to everyone, that they won the task was daft and a total dumbing down of the show to idiotic levels. Everyone can add what beats 4min 55sec when everyone is hanging on at 1min 15sec. It's 8 year old's maths.

I was surprised Anna didn't save the day with her shoes off technique for wet ramps.

The 14- year- old twins strike again!

They are quite the force to be reckoned with!!

I reckon the young surfing lad will smash it as well - light as a feather.

They must have done all this in a very short time frame - the dad Brian still has the bandage on his chin that he had last week.

Jaysus, they made mincemeat of that!!!

I was really impressed with the the youngsters this evening the twins and young Finnegan lad really delivered for their families. This time round I think some of the parents have really struggled fitness wise. It’s always good entertainment. Sad to see it being cancelled, it doesn’t strike as being the most expensive show to make.

They looked like they were going for a nice little walk in the park for most of it. It didn’t seem to stress them at all.

Two very impressive teams last night winning the eliminators. They shot up the final ramp!!!

I’d love to see the Davern’s from Tullamore go at it again someday. They lost 2 finals.

That Fitzsimons family were absolutely brilliant. Two young seriously slim fit parents and two wee fellas a great formula for that event.

Finnegans terrific in the eliminator the young kids in this serie shave been amazing.

I would be surprised if it is cancelled I would say it gets decent viewing figures? I don't think it is produced in house...but then very little is in RTE (if they did they would have made a decent amount of money as it has been sold as a format to quite a few other places)

Epic finale, Davy does it again, can't be good for his ticker. Brilliant from the Nugent's as the Fitzsimmons are one fit family. Great drama, and they are scrapping this for what reason?

Jaysus, I'm a bit behind, so don't know the result yet - but bloody hell, that backs against the wall was epic!

I loved the twins' family* roaring and shouting at each other, and the little fella in blue* is just unbelievable - stuck it out for 1 second longer than the brother, just for the bragging rights!!

*cannot get the hang of the families' names, no matter how hard I try

I'd hate to see it cancelled great family watching.

If cutting costs think they should stop paying 'celebs' fees to be on shows such as the dancing.

Fantastic final tonight so close and weather conditions really thew it.

Well done to those families sure will hear of those teenagers having sporting success again in future like Mona McSharry

They really need to get rid of those helmet cams where cargo nets are involved - another one gets all tangled up.

OK, it didn't make any difference to the end result this time, but it absolutely could.

Ridiculous things, is there ever any decent footage from them, even?

In other news, fair dues to that Dad of the twins, he's not the most ripped or aerodynamic of men, but he fairly put in a shift that day!

If this is cancelled by RTE i'd be certain TV3 would pick it up.

I'm pretty sure I've read that "Fittest Family" has been packaged and sold/distributed to other countries (Germany/Croatia/Hungary/Finland) so I don't see it not getting snapped up. The format is a winner.

What was the story with the ropes at the top of the ramp this year, did they explain why? Like were the ramps taller than last year or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,504 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

They did explain why - it was an absolute mudfest, we'd still be watching this time next week if they didn't put the ropes there!

If they're going to make the ramps "the highest ever, EVER" in every successive series, in fairness they should put ropes on them - this series was mostly family members throwing themselves at ramps and sliding back down.

What a finish though! You could see them slipping and sliding in the mud - that must have been a horrendous course to do.

Heartbreaking for whoever lost out in that final.

ok thanks, I was wondering why the ropes were there. Yeah it was a great final, its remarkable how close these finals all are year after year with only seconds in it between the teams. Its always an exciting watch.

I really enjoyed it, brilliant effort from all 4 families tonight. And I think it is RTÉ's loss if they choose not to keep the series. I'd love to know how much each of the leaders is paid. Davy's shouting does my head in, Anna wasn't as loud as usual this series. Congratulations to the 🏆 winners.

Odd that they're looking for contestants again?

As I've always thought, the key to winning this is having two young boys, a slim tough father and a mother who is able do a bit of running.

The show is mostly running. There's very little sheer strength. Any hanging or climbing is much easier for light lads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,784 ✭✭✭✭whelan2

Davy's reaction to his family winning was brilliant. Great final

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,504 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

In the early days, when they use to categorise the families by sport, the "cross-country runners"" used to always destroy the opposition - so yes, no surprise that a lean family, with a fit mother (no giggling down the back) constituted the two teams in the final event.

I wouldn't say it's mostly running though. Nor very little sheer strength. OK, there's no deadlifting, or whatever - but the bog, the backs to the wall, the tipping tyres, that's all strength and endurance, and the final event tonight was a lot more endurance than running. But yes, overall it suits light athletes a lot better than the heavier, strong types.

What a nail-biter of a finish. I was gutted for the 2 young lads on Anna's team but delighted that Davy's team won. I just couldn't warm to AG.

  • Registered Users Posts: 827 ✭✭✭farmingquestion

Most of those are not sheer strength. Tipping tyres is sheer strength. The weight doesn't change.

Hanging tough, back against the wall, walking through bog is all proportional.

The light lads have great strength to body weight ratio.

The thing is even if there is any heavy lifting, i.e carrying sandbags or whatever, it's rarely enough to knock them out. They'll have an eliminator or another round to gain it back on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,504 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Exactly - it's a spread across all disciplines.

I'm always amused by these "oh, but it suits X, because the events are all/mostly Y" - the events are varied, the teams vary, and the ones who can cope best across the board are the ones who come out on top.

Which tends to be the light, strong ones.

The Fitzsimons came across a bit arrogant at times. I am glad they lost.

I thought that youngfella was one of the best competitors I've ever seen on the show.

I hadn't even noticed the other family throughout the rounds. I was rooting for the Fitzsimons.
