Reference when licensee/not on lease?

    Hi all, just a quick question- Myself and my partner are currently looking for an apartment to rent. We have been licensees in our current shared house for the past year, paying rent to the lead tenant and our names are not on any lease. Have never met nor have had any communication with the landlord. How do we navigate a reference for the past year since the landlord has no knowledge of us? Hardly asking housemate/ lead tenant for reference would be any use?
