It hasn't been a boring start at least. A few talking points and a lovely goal. Valencia and Preciado have been strong, albeit against a poor side. Early days but not looking good for Richie Sadlier's pick of Qatar for tournament dark horse.

Jeysus, that Hyundai Steven Gerrard ad feels a bit counter-productive now - him defensively saying "the games not over yet", talking about climate change, but with his recent managerial failure in mind it really gives you the feeling all hope actually is lost!

I'm definitely missing something - they're stopping play to indicate offside when he heads the ball but surely it should be from when the ball was played in a few seconds earlier, no? Did 2 Ecuador players head the ball almost simultaneously or something, when challenging the keeper?

I don't think it was offside but what I think is been said (and I think there was a game a while ago where it was clearer) is that if as the Ecuador payer shin was behind the goalkeeper there must be 2 people between him and the goal and there was not. So could be correct

His shin appeared offside as he headed the ball, but he wasn't offside when the ball was played to him a second or two earlier. Isn't that when offsides are determined, when the ball leaves the passers foot?

Edit: ah ok, there was indeed 2 Ecuadorians beside each other in that phase of play. One passed the other. Kind of.

Looking at tv replays, it looks the new AI offside system has completely disregarded the goalkeeper in this offside situation. Going by a tv still, when the ball hits the Ecuador players head, the keepers arse and back foot are clearly playing the other Ecuadorian player onside. On the tv still, it's not even close the goalkeepers back foot look a yard or 2 behind the attacker.

Looks a completely shambolic call where the AI has got confused because of the keeper being involved or something.

I look forward to FIFA in hushed tones in the next 24 hours clarifying it was the wrong call and the AI system fecked up. A special nod to rte and BBC analysis who haven't even looked at the keepers positioning relative to the "offside" Ecuador player, just taking a simulated graphic as gospel.
