I think you'd have to hand back your Elf title if you didn't dress appropriately, given the day that's in it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,516 ✭✭✭✭DvB

It was a bit of a rhetorical question, I was always going to go dressed for the most wonderful time of the year, but was interested to see the responses 😀

Should have an oven in tomorrow (house is undergoing a slow, disasterous renovation) which means we can actually do the month-early dinner. Just going to be a turkey breast, roast potatoes, roast veg and gravy I think.

Have strewn a set of 2 quid battery LEDs over this years Lego Winter Village set on the mantlepiece as the very first bit of 'decoration'

Decorations are out of the attic. It begins.

Beyond excited this year for Christmas. After the last two years I am ready for it ALL.

Very busy weekend this weekend getting everything sorted for Christmas.

Deep cleaned the house yesterday and then put up the decorations, took all day but was worth it.

Then today we cleaned both gardens and wrapped all the presents 🎁

Definitely in the mood now 😁😁

I really fear he won’t. He loves getting into EVERYTHING!! The tree has survived 2 pups over the years but I genuinely fear for it this year.

they had a turning on the christmas lights even in Midleton on friday. I'm still wondering why they couldn't do it for Cork City

The Christmas ham pot moved from the kitchen to the utility room in January I'm guessing. It never made it's way to the cupboard.

I gave the utility room a good tidy tonight and didn't see the point of putting it away.

DvB Santa hat is a must on the plane.

Got the decorations out on Friday after work, had the in laws arrive at 3am. Myself and the FIL went out to see the golf and while there my wife and MIL decorated the house. It was a clash of generations as my OH has a 'classy tree' and the MIL is very 80's style, so two very different trees.

Sunday I finished making the reindeer for outside, still have all my fingers. Me and the OH are up against it with work at the moment and I have been seriously comfort eating. Not feeling very Christmassy but I am hoping it will come.

We started our decorations prep yesterday afternoon before heading to Dublin Zoo for the wild lights display (brilliant btw, but way too many people attending this year, it was rammed)

Have decided we will stick up the external lights after all, but will take the ones that could blow over in before we leave on Christmas Eve.

Other than giving the place a vacuum before the decorations go up on Friday we're all ready.

I had forgotten how much stuff we had though, just as well we didn't buy any more this year or I reckon we'd have struggled to store them all.

    Looking forward to Friday now!!

Oooh I can't wait for the weekend decorating! I was half tempted to do it the weekend just gone, but managed to restrain myself by just putting out all the Christmas Nutcrackers instead. 😁

I must look in Dunnes this week, they seem to have lovely bits, but I just haven't had a spare minute to pop in yet!

Excitement is building here... Horrible morning out there, windy, cold and lashing rain but I am currently WFH (which is rare these days) today watching the weather. I'm in the spare room/office where I dumped all the Christmas decorations yesterday, so there is literally a smell of Christmas in the air!

Mine didn't go near the tree......they really didn't like the feel of it (fake tree) they were also afraid of grass though......little weirdos!!

    Afternoon all

    Lovely day out!!!

The hotel we were at had all their Christmas decoration out. Amazing huge light reindeers, Christmas presents and Christmas tree decoration balls. Massive red ribbon on the way in and lots of other decorations. We had a Christmas tree in our room!!! Really got me in the mood (for Christmas- get your minds out of the gutter 😂)

@DvB think you are only allowed in the airport on Christmas Eve with a Christmas jumper and Santa hat on. I'm sure I read that somewhere :)

@Jude13- great work on the reindeer and on not losing any fingers!!

First step of Operation decorations will be tonight to get them out of the attic storage and onto the attic floor. Then from there to the front room during the week in prep for Friday.

@Loughc- you might have to look into a moat around your tree 😂

Picked up a couple of more presents when away as well so just one cousin and folks left.

Hope all had a nice weekend.

I haven't officially begun to decorate since we haven't opened the attic, but we've picked up Christmas throws, cushions, a large fuzzy polar bear and some candles and instead of putting them away they're out.

It's getting most festive by degrees.

At least it was dry for the drive in this morning. Can live with the cold, in fact a cold crisp morning can be quite pleasant, miserably dull & wet is the worst IMO.

Morning all, another damp and dull start here.

Ok so the tree in Heuston is up but no lights yet....seems to be artificial but looks good

now - footlocker needs to hang their heads in Shame!!

their Christmas tree “effort” is beyond lazy - a stack of empty Adidas and Nike shoe boxes arranged in a half arsed triangle type stack

    ffs like.

It looks so cold and depressing and commercial - not 1 bit festive !!

whatever happened to a lovely deep green fir tree decked out with nice crimson ribbons and baubles and is a bit of tinsel too much to ask for these days!??

that lovely smell from a real tree is so evocative of the Christmas for so many of us - empty shoe boxes are not an adequate replacement!!

I didn’t even ask if they had a crib on display - I can guess what their response would be.....grrr

foot locker - ffs it’s the laziest most cynical effort at Christmas decoration I’ve seen in a long time.

Do any business outside of overtly christian ones like the Abbey bookshop put up cribs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,854 ✭✭✭✭Beechwoodspark

Yeah loads do - I’m all for it - after all it’s what Christmas is all about !

So many people young and old love seeing a crib

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 24,996 Mod ✭✭✭✭Loughc

Really what shops do, I'd be curious to know as I haven't seen a crib in any shop in years unless it's for resale.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,854 ✭✭✭✭Beechwoodspark

Lots of places like cafes, restaurants, pharmacies, convenience stores, post offices, pubs, bookshops etc.

you would rarely see a crib in the likes of the big supermarkets or bigger brand clothes shops, which is a shame.

Often time’s the bigger places ram home the rampant commercialism (spend spend spend) but not the real spirit of Christmas.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 24,996 Mod ✭✭✭✭Loughc

Yeah I don't blame the bigger places, their job is to make money at Christmas time, no one holds a gun to our head to spend, we choose to.

The spirit of Christmas doesn't come from shops it comes from family, friends and love.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,854 ✭✭✭✭Beechwoodspark

    Completely agree.

All the consumerism/spend spend spend winter wonderland type stuff gets old really fast.

also it puts untold pressure on families and ppl... :/ when I hear about money lenders targeting ppl this time of year - it’s awful

Christmas has a much deeper meaning to us all

Got out for a nice walk earlier, hats and scarves weather is certainly here

It was lovely to see houses decorated on our walk

Got my stamps from the post office while out, going to get my international cards wrote and posted this week, the last number of years I’ve posted by an post dates but they didn’t arrive till February

Wrote a list of food supplies we need for over the Christmas and a separate list of fresh stuff we will need nearer the big day

Picked up my Turkey trays too I couldn’t add them to an online shop they didn’t seem to appear so grabbed them when I seen them another thing ticked off the list

Getting to the stage where we are going to make a start on the decorations too, maybe next week in the evenings after work but I told the wife (she loves to shop) that the attic door is not getting opened until every cupboard in the kitchen, sitting room and bedrooms are checked because there is Christmas decorations and ornaments everywhere in the house. 😄

I swear there is bits in presses and behind furniture all over the place. Go to get a t-towel and there is ribbons in that press, there is a dresser in the sitting room and there are sets of lights etc in there and there's rolls of wrapping paper behind doors and armchairs!

Just seen the Guinness add first time this year!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,997 ✭✭✭Princess Calla

Well, I mean, ya know....you could always get a big box and gather it all up yourself 😂🤣🤣

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,045 ✭✭✭BK5

Ha ha ha, I am pretty domesticated at this stage 😄

The sitting room furniture has to be moved around to make room for the tree in one of the corners so we will have a good clean up and have the room looking lovely by this day next week.

Heard the familiar tune in the background when I was busy earlier - made me smile 🙂

Christmas tree got delivered earlier & got my lights on Sunday & some little LED ornaments to go with it.

So just waiting on my decorations to get dispatched - Given that I’m starting afresh this year, I decided that I was going to make this tree a bit more personal & ordered a mixed theme of decorations that I have various passions about, so looking forward to blending them all together on the tree when they arrive.

Absolutely bunged up here with head cold and cough. In a fitness race now to be ok for the decorations going up Friday! A dose going around everyone seems to be unwell the last few weeks.

The Dunnes shopping centre in Maynooth generally has one.

Often has the full complement of figures in it from day one!

My daughter and Mrs are the same, myself and the young lad have managed to avoid it so far. Fully expect to catch it or something like it as soon as I leave the office on Dec 22nd though! Sods law 😀

You're doing something right! Hopefully yourself and the young fella stay healthy. With a newborn here it's heartbreaking not being able to hold and kiss her. Hopefully will clear up soon.
