Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Vast majority of the games so far have been poor. Hopefully things improve.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,129 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Its just week 1 cageyness. Next week some teams like Argentina are already in do or die games.

Ya the games where the teams who think they are 2nd and 3rd best are absolute disasters to lose for either.

    Make for awful first games.

But even still this game lacked much quality. In or around the box

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,864 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

Yeah both of these teams will be confident they can beat Canada, Croatia will be thinking they can run up a bit of a score and that should be enough to get them through unless they get hammered by Belgium...So it's not worth the risk going all out to win today

Three 0-0 draws in the last 4 matches. Not good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,948 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

One 0-0 draw in the entire 2018 World Cup

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Junya Ito starts for Japan. He's been very good for Reims this season. Reckon he can cause some problems. Germany should win with that side. Pity Sane not fit to start but Musiala is a super replacement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,874 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

I'd say Canada could be handy enough based on their qualification campaign. Think Croatia would take a 1-0 against them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

German penalty. Keeper made sure of the foul there.

    Gundogan scores.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,179 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

What a stupid and soft way to concede a goal.

Germany are really starting to string some nice passes together

Playing like a team with no pressure or expectations on them, probably the first World Cup in decades where that’s been the case for Germany.

It’s only one half of football but they’ve got dark horse written all over them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Germany well on top and it looks a matter of time before they get a second. Rudiger making it look easy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭cmac2009

Really was a tremendous world cup when you look back at some of the high scoring games and the sensational comebacks/last minute goals.

This has been abysmal so far, hopefully we might see some better performances once we get past the cagey first round of games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,036 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

What’s the craic with not starting Minamino and Tomiyasu? Is he resting them for the two games they’ve a better chance in or something?

Minamino was their joint top scorer in qualifying like (and the fella he was joint with is missing the World Cup through fitness/injury).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,129 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I was glued to that World Cup. Outside of France winning it was a great tournament for upsets and smaller nations.

My enjoyment was a bit hampered by living and working hospitality in London at the time though. I will forever owe a debt to the Croats.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Minamino has struggled at Monaco, so I can see why he has left him out. Surprised Tomiyasu isn't involved. They're looking really vulnerable at RB.

I see Japan's coach brought on Tomiyasu for Kubo. I thought Kubo looked okay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,036 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Even with his indifferent form at Monaco, he’s still the best goalscorer in their WC squad though… seems a bit mad, given they’re not exactly stacked with accomplished forwards..

Havertz has been frustrating. I'd like to see Füllkrug replace him.

Should be 1-1. Good save from Neuer but the follow-up should have been buried instead of being blazed high and wide.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

    Big save Neuer from Ito.

Now 1-1! Doan off the bench. They have been knocking on the door.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,179 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

And now Japan are level. Nice move. Good save again from Neuer but no mistake this time with the follow-up finish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,036 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Maybe he was right to spring the lads from the bench 😅

Doan scores from the rebound off a Minamino shot.

    Japan looking lively now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

If Germany lose this, they're in trouble. You don't want to be playing Spain knowing you probably need to win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,036 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Holy ****! Another sub goal! Germany in big big trouble!

Now this is a proper World Cup match! Go on Japan! 😁

    WHAT A GOAL!

    JAPAN LEAD!

Oh wait, is he onside? Yes. Goal stands. This is very interesting now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,179 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Another massive potential shock on the cards. Japan lead 2-1. They deserve it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,716 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

More than a few issues there, but expect far, far more from a keeper than the pathetic action from Neuer

What was he waiting on ?

The shot is hit into a bit of a blind spot but still he needs to make himself a lot bigger than that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Japan have been brilliant this half. Credit to their coach. He saw the problems and found a way to fix them. Hope they hold out. We might get a good bit of added time of course.

Rudiger meanwhile has been much worse this half. I remember he did a bit of showing off nonsense when he went for a sprint against one of the Japanese players. I think he got complacent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,716 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

Germans getting desperate looking for that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,179 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Another huge shock confirmed. Japan beat Germany 2-1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

All over! What a win for Japan. Well deserved after that second half.

Spain vs Germany just got very tasty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,179 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Germany can have no complaints, their only goal came from the penalty spot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,864 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

An unerring eye for an irrelevant stat has our George. How many times did he tell us there that was the first time Germany had lost consecutive games at World Cup finals? Okay given the teams in question are South Korea and Japan that is significant but the 'record' would still hold if they had lost the semi-final in 2018 and to Spain in their first game in Qatar...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,290 ✭✭✭✭rob316

That was a mad 2nd half from the Japanese considering how dominant Germany were in the first half. They'll struggle without a striker though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,914 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Jayus what happened in Germany just saw the result. Are the Japanese lads creditable dark horses ? A lot of their players seem to be on the up in general

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,129 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I wouldn't call it a huge shock. Japan are solid and Germany knew the had problems going in.

Except for Rudiger apparently, he looked like he was auditioning for Riverdance. The eejit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,290 ✭✭✭✭rob316

Asian football in general seems to be on the up, Saudi and Japan have some really technically brilliant footballers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,914 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Add in high workrate to the technical ability and any team will have to play well to beat them.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Depending on how things pan out in the Belgium group, Japan could end up doing very well if they finish second and Belgium do the same. Potentially they could face Croatia, Morocco or Canada in the last 16, and Uruguay in the quarters. Whoever tops Japan’s group will likely face Brazil in the quarters and that’s probably the end of the road for whoever that is.

I won’t be writing Costa Rica off either, while they clearly aren’t as good as the 2014 side that got as far as the quarters, Navas is still a world class keeper and that’s so often the difference between defeats and draws in international football. They could frustrate Spain if they can keep it goalless into the second half.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,914 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

I know nothing about Costa Rica anyway - except Bananas. But could Spain slip up….?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,036 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Spain going the strikerless route… feels like we might be heading for another game with ten thousand passes but no goals at the end of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,129 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Well done RTE with their "release Rodri" tagline 🤣
