irish rugby fans attend club games, and internationals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 704 ✭✭✭Ben Bailey

It may be that the Irish / IRFU provincial structure allows a more obvious connection between the casual (Internationals & big ERC games) supporter and the committed club supporter. That being said, success at International level, which funds all levels here, is key. The GP reliance on gate & TV money looks the more precarious model.

Rugby fans in ireland support their clubs very well (their provincial clubs) and its to the detriment of the AIL club game which is a pity but not a travesty, those fans also attend internationals.

In the UK the fans who support the internationals do so in large numbers but dont turn up in such numbers at club games and its to the detriment of the professional club game in the UK as we are currently seeing.

Apparently Exeter are calling an egm to get permission from the members to sell a non rugby asset to clear some debt.

It could be the hotel or some fields.

Some of the Exeter loans are LIBOR+3.5%. Good when LIBOR was 1-2% a year ago. Not good now with LIBOR around 4.5%.

I'm unsure if this is because Exeter can't meet debt payments or if its because 8% is too high interest and they want to pay expensive debt down.

JvG showing his ineptitude as a coach. A SH returning from injury who is out of his feet at 60 mins and he doesn't replace him until 78 mins, a game there for the taking and he does that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,058 ✭✭✭Digifriendly

Bath win with last play of the game despite being under the pump for most of the 80 mins. Ted Hill who joined from Worcester was player of the match.

Wasp's stadium has managed to sell to Mike Ashley for 17 million with bidding closing mere hours before a 25 million pound offer was made.

Buying a stadium that size for 17 million is a steal but for large properties like that its a question of who has the funds in place at the right time.

Ashley bid 17M, the sale closed and then someone bid 25?

So Ashley just makes 8M profit in a few hours?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

Everyone knew Ashley was getting the stadium for cheap. Sometimes that just happens in administration sales.

I don't think Ashley plans to turn around and flip the stadium although he does have the option.

A fair value sale would have seen a year long selling process and a value close to 50 million.

Not fully shocked - Russell never struck me as a guy who would be Stuart Lancaster's idea of a right-hand-man.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,920 ✭✭✭✭stephen_n

Not sure he suits JVG’s one out runner style though.

Definitely not a Lancaster style player.

JVG looks determined to make shite of yet another club. Biggest spoofer in rugby.

I wonder if vanGrann will try to grab some Munster lads? There could be some who could do well over in Bath.

Tbf, Bath were a shambles before he got there. They lost 18 of 24 last year in the league and finished bottom, came second from bottom in their 11-team pool in Europe and got absolutely hammered out of the Challenge Cup by Edinburgh.

No clue! But he did bring Clote over. Maybe John Ryan?

Finn Russell to Bath, £1m a season. Mad

Finn Russell, definitely the sort of player you could build a team around.

You’d have to assume his salary will be excluded from the cap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,424 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

He'll be on the marquee signing list alright, so not included in the cap.

Personally think that money is nuts.

Genuinely hope this doesn't work out for Bath.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when people talk about Finn Russell. How could anyone pay £1m a year for him (in pure rugby terms). I might have every other 6N outhalf ahead of him - bar Italy I suppose.

  • Subscribers Posts: 41,915 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

    Paolo garbisi says hello!

Russell is a complete luxury player at test level, who cannot grab a game by the scruff and direct it in favour of his team.

He's a lock picker that's as liable to throw a worldly defence opening pass as he is to throw a stupid interception

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,638 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

I wonder more and more about VanGrann. That's a boatload of money for a lad that's so unfocused. Of course, other signings may bump Bath. They need an enema at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

Bath seemingly recover from needing to impose paycuts across the board two years ago. Then in a year when two other clubs go into administration, they spend £1m on Finn Russell. Causality is a tricky concept to prove, but these kind of decisions, in such wider contexts, are often "heavily correlated" with pretty terrible outcomes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,638 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

Dan Biggar was also released from his contract with the Saints. It's mind boggling that it's come to this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,177 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

A lot of the premiership pay cuts are being made to fit inside the ever decreasing salary cap - which Finn will be outside. So even if a club has the money they need to make pay cuts and let players go. Bath's owner is certainly not short of cash.

I would be very surprised if the Finn Russell signing was JVG driven - doesn't seem like his type of player. This Bruce Craig's fingerprints all over it.

Finn Russell appears to be a fan favorite with Racing. Craig is probably hoping the Bath fans will be as forgiving of his many flaws. In return for moments of sheer brilliance and see it as a positive.

I see Joe 'the character' 'bit of a lad' Marler has been at it again. Bad mouthing a players mother who was in hospital allegedly.

    He really is a d**k

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,316 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

A reminder that Marler fondled the penis of Alun Wyn Jones and it was laughed off. He was banned for 10 weeks, but there were a plethora of current players rowing in behind him to defend his reputation. The man is a scumbag.

He's a man who promotes mental wellbeing for himself, but is fine with damaging that of others.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,330 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

He didn't miss a single game over the AWJ incident. He got two games for calling Samson Lee a "gypsy boy", then two more for kicking an opponent in the head in his first game back.

Hopefully he actually gets a meaningful sanction this time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,174 ✭✭✭PMC83

Yeah not a fan at all. Seems all he has to do is give a quirky post match interview and all his previous offenses are forgotten. Always thought he was a bellend.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,790 ✭✭✭✭Burkie1203

Marler banned for 6 weeks, 4 of them suspended. Given his previous thats an awful lenient ban.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,044 ✭✭✭Yeah_Right

Dont agree with that. From what I've read/heard, it was basically a "your moma" joke. Sledging is part of the game and I don't want to see it removed. As long as it isn't racist or homophobic.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,790 ✭✭✭✭Burkie1203

Marler pushes the mental health agenda on his SM and tells people to be careful what they say as they don't know what's going on in people's lives. Heenan mother is currently hospitalised.

Using opponent's families as a means of a wind up Is crass and has no part in the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

    Agreed.

Sledging happens. I'd appreciate some clarity as to what the actual offense is.

Was it the joke. Was it making it multiple times through the game after a Bristol player pulled him aside and said Lay off Jake's Mom she is in hospital (not confirmed but rumoured). Is it that sledging is now like the Italian incest law. Its legal but it becomes illegal if it provokes a scandal.

I think its hypocritical that he goes on social media talking about mental health, the importance of respect and shutting up as you don't know whats going on in someone else's life and sledges someone by talking about their hospitalised mother but its not massively atypical sledging.

I'd love if Marler's mental health charities came out and said this man doesn't represent us. His behavior doesn't fit what the behavior of ambassador for our charity should be or the message that he sends out on our behalf. That's what the sanction should be rather than anything on a rugby field.

Is this a judgement that will see sledging punished going forward or is a one off for reasons I don't understand.

Its definitely hypocritical of Marler to sledge people and be a mental health advocate. But being a hypocrite isn't worthy of a suspension.

If Marler knew Heenan's mother was in hospital when he made the comment, then he's a wanker and should apologise but still not worthy of suspension. As @CIARAN_BOYLE said, the charities he works with should call him out and even stop working with him. That would be more appropriate for sledging rather than suspension.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,631 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

So once its not homophobic or racist then Its fine because its part of the game???

Forgive me for thinking there is a long list of things that should also be left alone and a players family is one of them, unless you think its ok to poke at someones hospitalized mother, maybe wives and children are ok as well so?

Marler is a scumbag, but the media love him and give him a free ride because in an era of media trained simple soundbite chats where only some superlatives are given out joe does something different that gives some ‘personality’ to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,631 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

this shouldnt need to be explained, even a kid understands the concept of not talking sh!t about someone elses family.

An adult which joe pretends to be should have the maturity to know that you dont talk about someones family.

It doesnt matter what the situation is with the other players mother because its off limits and ignorance isnt a defence for something you should not be doing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,790 ✭✭✭✭Burkie1203

Marler wanted a reaction. He got one. Just not the one he hoped for

The 4 weeks off is a joke given his previous offences.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,631 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

he would have gotten longer if the 6 nations wasnt coming up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,044 ✭✭✭Yeah_Right

@lawrencesummers It was trash talk. A players family has always been part of trash talk. In every sport. There have been some great ones in cricket over the years. Including ones involving players' families.

Marler was trying to bait Heenan and it worked. He bought a penalty. It's now back fired on him. That's part of it, sometimes it bites you in the ass.

I see the Comms Have been translated.

Marler called Heenan's mother a "fcuking wh0re" twice, just because Heenan said "brother, youre getting mad".. this turned marler onto " I'm not your brother, I don't have them same mother as you, your mother's a fcuking wh0re"

Not very clever from a supposed quick wit, more like the utterings of a dumb stook.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,631 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

where do you draw the line? Dying wives? Sick kids?

if you think calling someone mother a whore is acceptable or excusable it says a lot about you tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,172 ✭✭✭OldRio

Interesting that some think calling a players mother a 'whore' is OK.

Is calling someone from the travelling community 'gypsy boy' OK?

I find both reprehensible to be honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,631 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

Its pretty obvious that marler has the maturity of a teenager, he gets away with it somewhat because he is operating in the environment where a lot of that behaviour is ignored / accepted or laughed off.

His problems will start post sport if he doesnt grow up fairly quickly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,330 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

Marler is an absolute muppet and if those comments are accurate, then there's absolutely no way you can call that "part of the game". That's way outside the bounds of sledging.

I think two weeks is about fair but the idea of sending this pillock into a school preaching about the values of the game is ridiculous.
