Very clever and IMHO more effective in that it covers a multitude beyond just LBGTI rights

Anecdotal of course but really feeling no WC buzz at all. No one talking about it at work, not even a company fantasy league/pool. Bumped into a Polish friend yesterday afternoon at a shop during the MEX/POL match and he usually has a big viewing party at his house.

Really interested in seeing the viewership numbers so far.

The challenge is it’s Winter and many of the games are morning and afternoon- coupled with many not wishing to support given the various controversies which is entirely understandable a personal choice, there just isn’t the opportunities to participate compared to if games were played later in the day.

I enjoyed watching a few of the games but I’ll miss most of it I’d say

I'm WFH so am enjoying the 10 and 1 kickoffs. Of course I'm not fo hosting the World Cup in the Winter or in a desert but here we are.

    Let's go Japan!!

No Government is openly criticizing Qatar. The Qatari Sovereign Wealth Fund is investing billions and everyone wants a slice of the pie.

The reason they are buying Eurofighters and a couple of A330 tankers to refuel them, is because they own 6% of EADS. They also own 16% of Volkswagen, sizeable chunks of large French companies such as Vinci and Veolia and of course, Paris St German.

That's not to mention the large parts of New York they are currently buying up.

Most of those Jap fans are fake. Easy enough to tell.

Those of us in the office also have it 😉 RTE Player on the phone with volume at a level where if I can hear anything interesting happening I can have a look.

Just made the rookie mistake of leaving LiveScore notifications on though. Equaliser popped up before the goal happened

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,344 ✭✭✭Gusser09

That's the problem with RTE Player. It's terrible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,344 ✭✭✭Gusser09

    FFS JAPAN 😀

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,438 ✭✭✭✭Collie D

Jaysus. When Japan equalised I wondered could we have a repeat of the Argentina - Saudi game.

Fair play, Japan..were fairly under the cosh in first half...very nice first touch for the goal.

I’m sitting with wife watching this. Before Germany scored we were chatting about how it reminds us of when we were in Japan in 2002 for ireland game against Germany.

Delighted for Japan , they were wonderfully friendly hosts, I hope they get the win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,324 ✭✭✭archfi

Konzentraten on ze aktuell fussball, Deutschland. Nicht der oder klappy-klappy-shtuffen.

    Well done Japan.

A thing isn't what it says it is.

A thing is what it does.

Yes it's totally fake. All these elite footballers apparently obsessed with gay rights yet there's not a single openly gay player among them, it makes no sense.

If they were protesting about the treatment of the immigrant workers who built the stadiums they're playing in THAT would be interesting. Then they'd have to look in the mirror and ask themselves and FIFA some tough questions. But this "oh let's all be nice to LGBT unlike these horrible Qataris" is just cheap virtue signalling of the worst kind, makes them look good while avoiding the blood on their own hands

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,344 ✭✭✭Gusser09

It's not just gay rights though that they are protesting against. It's discrimination in general. One Love.

Serves Germany right for covering their mouths and ruining the team photo!!

Wow, nice job, Japan! Still haven't recovered from yesterday's shock with Saudi Arabia and now this. Awesome! What's next, Serbia will beat Brasil tomorrow?

Just seen this image pop up now as I searched for the result. The absolute mortification of this farce. Get on with the feckin football and stop signaling. World cup was given 12 years ago, hardly a dicky bird since. Now that they are over there, it's like watching real life Woke Twitter Instagram in action. Who can outdo the most outspoken.

Have to say, maybe Infantino had somewhat of a point, if poorly made. Who are Europe to dictate to Middle Eastern cultures.? We may not agree with them, but is that not for their citizens to affect change if they wish.? They don't agree with certain aspects of our culture. I don't seem them coming to protest in Europe at Western values they don't agree with.

The least that can be done is to respect their laws when in their country, rather than this woke tirade.

Are we going to see similar visual protests in 4 years time against the abortion bans in the US. Are we feck.

Considering Germany are financing Putin's war in Ukraine with their gas purchases it's the height of hyprocisy.

If anyone arrives in Ireland we expect them to respect our laws and customs.

    Hypocrisy indeed

You couldn't make it up countries blasted when they don't do something and when a team does (and nobody knows what there stance is) they get blasted too hillarious

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,793 ✭✭✭FunLover18

So I'm guessing that you don't care and anyone else who does care, you can label as "preachy" or "virtue signalling" or whatever the term of the day is and they can't disprove it without further falling into your "trap".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,663 ✭✭✭Seathrun66

They're protesting against all discrimination, including that against migrant workers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,054 ✭✭✭✭Danzy

Down with bad things but nothing specific.

They will talk the talk on TV but they are not going to do anything about it, they can hardly play to a decent standard never mind take on Islam.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,054 ✭✭✭✭Danzy

Japan and Saudi Arabia for the final, after beating American Samoa and Costa Rica in the Semi.

There is no kick in the competition but nice to see the minnows getting a day out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,412 ✭✭✭Jequ0n

It is fascinating what you deducted from me simply stating that people are judged it they do not comply with the current trend.

Ah yes infantino who made a comparison to his own “affliction” of being ginger to being disabled lol. I seem remember loads of protests/condemnation over the French burqa ban and protests over the satirical cartoon depictions of Muhammad and fatwa issued as a result of those images by Danish and French magazines.

And this old tired group think shite of respect their rules. Do you respect that if a women is raped in Qatar and for a conviction to be handed down she needs 4 male witnesses to said rape. Why the absolute f should any decent person respect that? Have a word with yourself. A 3 year sentence for men having sex together and a possible death sentence for Muslims who do it. Replace gay with Christian or white and 90% of the types crying about it being woke would be going off their tits complaining about it, doesn’t affect them so they don’t care and any excuse to mention woke gets them wet.

That backward hole should never have gotten the World Cup, pointing out its a backward hole doesn’t make you woke, it’s just a fact. Respect it all you want if it aligns with your views but don’t ask decent people to shut up and do the same. In the 40s you’d probably be crying their country their rules for Germany as well. Anyway as you were

The BBC Panel for tonight is ticking all the right boxes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,793 ✭✭✭FunLover18

You said you assume most people don't care, that plus you calling John Oliver's piece "preachy" I deduced that you include yourself in that. Apologies if I'm wrong. Don't play the "judgement" card because you're doing the exact same, you judged Oliver to be too preachy and looking for clicks.

I'm trying to have a discussion without judgement; What would someone have to do for you to think they genuinely care?

Ah here, whatever about the protests being hypocritical I thought everyone agreed that Infantino is a cock of the highest order! His ridiculous rant was way more pathetic than any protest attempted so far!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,412 ✭✭✭Jequ0n

I didn’t comment on John Oliver. I commented on the general condemnation that happens once someone doesn’t comply with the expectation to follow a trend. No offence taken.

Qatar Airways are fantastic. The Dreamliner flys in/out from Dublin near every day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,344 ✭✭✭Gusser09

    Muenier looks like dick turpin.

Great hearty display from Canada. Again shows what you can do with largely inferior players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,737 ✭✭✭Tombo2001

    The thing is though...

This World Cup was announced 10 years ago.

If someone didnt care enough to say anything about it then, and they still didnt care enough about it to say anything when all the stories about migrant deaths started emerging in 2014......then what exactly is the point in suddenly finding a voice now when all the stadiums are built, when the two year qualification phase has been completed, and when the teams have arrived in Qatar and are playing the matches.

That surely indicates bandwagon jumping more than 'caring'.

The hypocrisy around these world cup protests are just off the charts as far as I'm concerned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,793 ✭✭✭FunLover18

Apologies, I need to pay more attention to usernames.

My point still stands though, you're judging those who stand by a cause as merely doing so to avoid being labelled a bigot or following a trend, no? So how would one who does genuinely care avoid that judgement?

But do you think it's something people should care about and protest?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 204 ✭✭supermans ghost

Great post and 100% on the money. where were all these people 10 years ago with their outrage and protests when it could actually have have resulted in FIFA reversing it’s decision to award the World Cup to Qatar. It is hardly surprising to see millionaire footballers who are some of the best actors in the world when it comes to conning ref’s into awarding penalties or getting their opponents sent off now expect us to believe they actually care about the fate of migrant workers or for that matter the alphabet people and their entourage. Not one player that I know off has refused to go to Qatar in protest, so that tells you all you need to know. Now for all those lefties who wake up each morning and look for something to rage against, if you really want to show how serious you are, then get your s*it together and organise future protests against any events that Qatar sponsor, say the Dubai open for example, or is that too much work. Rant over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,411 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

    Thats it entirely.

It was announced 12 years ago and I remember being shocked and disgusted at how Qatar won.

I simply couldnt believe that such a ludicrous bid could ever even be considered.

Not because of the civil rights but because of the fact the country was smaller than Munster, had no stadiums, was too hot, had no footballing history, and basically failed in every category of criteria.

It was obvious that people had been bribed and many hadnt even made a secret of it.

Guardiola was an ambassador for Qatar and Barcelona were at their peak then, he said he was an ambassador because "they looked after him" when he played in Qatar at the end of his career.

Im sure they did Pep, just like Man City are looking after him now, another filthy entity.

When Blatter and Platini were booted out I was sure that justice would be done and Qatar would be stripped as host but somehow the madness of running a Summer tournament there still persisted.

Finally they realised that this was folly and moved it to Winter instead of doing the correct thing and stripping Qatar but I guess it could have been very messy legally.

Now the virtue signallers and keyboard warriors have jumped onto the bandwagon, as inevitably they do lurching from one opportunity to another.

Where was the outrage about the golf in Dubai or the Formula 1 last weekend ?

A country where death is a penalty for homosexuality

Lets get on with the football now, I dont want to be lectured anymore by frauds such as Gary Lineker, Gary Neville and co.

    They are all utter hypocrites.

So what is to be achieved by arbitrarily deciding that some people who claim to care are actually just bandwagoners? If they are adding their voice, let them, no?

I just don't see what good pointing out hypocrisy and whataboutery does unless you're Infantino and want to deflect attention away from the situation in Qatar.

    Ah jasus.... unless you're Infantino.

    Like really.

You are not caring. You are not protesting. You are just having an online debate / argument, which is a form of media entertainment for people. Something to do while having a cup of coffee. Thats all it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,676 ✭✭✭elefant

People have been unhappy about the world cup being awarded to Qatar for years. This is amplified at the moment because the world cup is actually happening in Qatar right now - some people are considering what that means more deeply as a result, and some people are learning about it for the first time as a result.

Why is it so hard to accept that people genuinely do have major ethical concerns with the world cup being hosted in a country where women, gay people and migrant workers are treated terribly, for the purpose of sports-washing its reputation? Fair enough being naturally cynical, but there's a weird level of fury surrounding the thought that some (or even many) people's motives are performative when it comes to caring about the treatment of strangers.

Bad things are happening somewhere that everyone's eyes are on. People are unhappy about those bad things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,975 ✭✭✭growleaves

I'm starting to think teams like England and Germany should be have just boycotted the world cup if protesting is what they're about. Why are they there?

Leave the football to the footballing nations, like Brazil.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,663 ✭✭✭Seathrun66

Nope. You didn't read the article:

'this is an LGBT and human rights issue....'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,663 ✭✭✭Seathrun66

Twelve years ago plenty of people were protesting.

Ten years ago plenty of people were protesting.

Eight years ago plenty of people were protesting......

Little use though when the media doesn't give enough focus at the correct time and waits until the event is happening.
