Where are we going for protein?

Good deal if casein is your staple.

Wouldn't recommend it for people thinking it's a direct replacement for whey, simply based on mixability. It's much thicker, almost paste like. Won't mix well with food.

But for a person aware of that and just wanting a slower digesting protein, it's a decent price.

Yes, I discovered this the hard way after trying to mix up a scoop with half a cup of water; the result was terrible, in terms of both taste and texture/thickness.

But the good news is I found a solution: just use 30:70 or maybe even 50:50 casein:whey and it's grand for both texture and taste. Sorted.

Not tried the impact native whey isolate before, but for €12.80kg delivered, it's worth a shot. Sourced from French milk, but 86% protein.

The hydrolysed whey protein is unflavoured and I've used before, 78% protein and works out at €11.80kg delivered.

Couple of good deals there if anyone is looking to stock up.

What's a decent price point for protein lately? I've a few weeks supply left but trying to keep an eye out for deals when they come up. Not sure when to pull the trigger though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,855 ✭✭✭✭dahat

Need to order next week & prices are gone way up from last time i bought ( months ago).

Have i any hope of getting good value from €50 spend? max two shakes per day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,103 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

Likewise. I've resorted to eating more real food that is high in protein.

Best chance is Black Friday, and going blends rather than Whey.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,247 ✭✭✭Esse85

Black Friday is more often than not a disappointment.

It's marketing activity designed to draw in the unsavvy buyer who thinks they are getting value because they don't know any better. The protein suppliers are experts but not exclusive to this.

What's the benchmark for a deal/value you might ask?

€15 or less per kg delivered with a protein % greater than 78% is good criteria to start with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,526 ✭✭✭Macy0161

Black Friday in general yes, but while it remains to be seen this year, myprotein had deals about as good as they (myprotein) get last year. 47% is the best I regularly see, but iirc they peaked at 50%+ last year for a period.

I looked back at my order history and didn't purchase this time last year, which suggests whey protein prices for Black Friday weren't anything special.

45% off is pretty standard TBH

Would be great to exceed that this year and I hope they do but I expect the big discounts to be on the slower moving higher margin products like the multi vitamins, fish oils, bars and aminos.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,526 ✭✭✭Macy0161

Just looked there - I got 55% last Black Friday, and order included 5kg of Whey (possibly my last whey order with them!).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,247 ✭✭✭Esse85

    Cheers OmegaGene, good find.

Said I'd try a few of those fancy sounding coffee whey products too.

Banoffee and strawberry jam Roly Poly here I come!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,855 ✭✭✭✭dahat

    Top stuff folks!!!

3kgs delivered for €35 will see me right for a long time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭DukeCaboom

Cheers for the tips, just stocked up.

    Thanks also. Ordered.

It was only Limited Edition Whey, not the general whey. I assume it's short dated. Banoffee and Strawberry Jam Roly Poly, Apple and Custard were the options when I ordered earlier, in varying sizes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,368 ✭✭✭henke

Yeah I just spotted that afterwards and edited my post. Good value for the price so picked up some whatever they will taste like 😀.

The apple crumble is delicious, almost like a dessert with milk.

Regards dates, I've always found MP very good in this area, typically 12-18 months. Hope I haven't jinxed it now.

Separately, the banana/cinnamon native whey isolate i got recently is gorgeous.

Anyone find short shelf life with myprotein? I asked on chat and was told it's 6 months so went ahead and ordered 6 packets of bcaa(am Vegan so use every day) but they expired in 2 months . I was caught out a few times in last few years so always try to have months in advance, and thought was environmentally friendly to have delivered in one go. Included a different type of bcaa in my next order and again only had 2 months shelf life. Annoyed that had gone to effort of checking on chat .

Think they degrade but you're right, surely be able to use for a few months after expiry date.

Did anyone else receive notice that their order for the limited edition whey protein has been delayed? I ordered the Banoffee and Apple Crumble and both are delayed, I just hope they don't cancel.

How's the coffee whey guys, haven't gotten my delivery yet but looking forward to trying that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,526 ✭✭✭Macy0161

Having buyers regret on apple crumble and custard.... should've piled in for the max 5!

@Esse85 coffee whey was in the order I put through today.

My Protein sales are finally good. Clear whey isolate is €30. That's what i paid last year but I haven't seen it at that once this year. It's been between €50 - €60 all year.

My apple crumble order has been cancelled. I must have just missed the last of the stock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,855 ✭✭✭✭dahat

Had it earlier - caramel macchiato or something. Really nice flavour & sorry I don’t get another bag.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,855 ✭✭✭✭dahat

That’s some difference in price on the creatine, 10 months apart

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,247 ✭✭✭Esse85

This offer is available again in that flavour. About €10kg

    Great deal.

Can anyone remember what the MyProtein sales are like around Christmas / New Years in the past? Wondering if it's worthwhile holding off on buying protein until then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,247 ✭✭✭Esse85

Looking back at my order history, I didn't order from Dec to mid Feb last year.

Hard to predict, been some great deals on the limited edition whey recently.

TBH I wouldn't expect good deals around this time as I'd expect demand to be high, new year new me etc therefore no need to discount heavily.

Seems to be more emphasis placed on moving high margin products like vitamins, BCAAs and flavour drops.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,337 ✭✭✭VonLuck

I may have to buy a small amount just to keep me going until the sales so.

I received the limited edition Whey from MyProtein in the last fortnight - Banoffee and Jam Roly Poly - very happy with both. Thanks to the tip off's on this thread.

if you just want to top up then supervalu are selling myprotein now and if you have the app you get money off shopping like €5 off €30 etc so it might bring the price down and save you waiting 2 weeks for delivery

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,337 ✭✭✭VonLuck

Really? I shop in SuperValu and have never seen it on sale. What aisle would it be in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,001 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

next to the protein bars with the health food and gluten free items

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,526 ✭✭✭Macy0161

It may depend on the Supervalu though, especially the ones that aren't former Superquinn.

Can be worth having a look at some of the Irish suppliers too, in a pinch.

I ordered from ROS a few weeks back and the package arrived the next day. So maybe the rush on deliveries coming up to Christmas isn't helping

Recently ordered protein from discount supplements. You have to spend 150 euro to avail of free delivery!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,526 ✭✭✭Macy0161

Notwithstanding the local fastway issue we have on our route, you'd get myprotein orders quicker! There's a few with shops too though, if they're convenient.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,001 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

i ordered in october when myprotein sold out of creatine

€8.88kg for the limited edition apple crumble flavour impact whey and then €22.50 for 2.5kg of the strawberry flavour, brilliant prices on both.
