Lightning off the coast of Cork Kerry

Torrential rain here near Tralee, would be nice to get a bit of a light show, don't know if the storms off the coast could make it inland we will see.

I wonder if Convective Weather is gone. They haven't issued a forecast in a while. That's not unusual but their Facebook page is gone and their twitter has no posts.

I found them very good, would be a pity if they are no more.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,233 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Dan Holley said on Nov 1st 'Sadly, being a voluntary organisation, no time to issue convective forecasts at the moment but @TorroUK

have flagged the squally showers/thunderstorms today with potential for isolated tornadoes and large hail' , although did put out a forecast the next day.

Dan does post on his own twitter account https://twitter.com/danholley_ and presents on TORRO https://www.torro.org.uk/ and works for the BBC

Has some very good studies that can be found on Youtube if you haven't seen them like this one..... https://youtu.be/PNP0RJ7e6fo

So he seems to be getting busier all the time, would be a big loss if it doesn't continue.

I liked them as their forecasts were straightforward and understandable for a simple layman like me!

Unstable airmass following the frontal passage overnight, heavy convective showers to follow from early morning more so along Atlantic coastal counties, thunderstorms and hail quite possible scattered along the coasts or a bit inland , some of the showers could produce locally strong blustery winds.

Very heavy gusty showers here around Tralee today, got caught out in one this morning and got soaked , went very dark at times, some hail mixed in, some sparks also on the dingle peninsula picked up on the ATD.

The second wave in the afternoon/ early evening and associated upper trough turning more negatively tilted with very cold uppers becoming quite unstable could produce a fair bit of activity along the SW, S and SE coasts and later over the Irish Sea. Possibly mostly over water but some might stray inland too. Big showers with hail at times and blustery if not squally along coastal areas.

That storm passed close by here and nothing at all showing on the Met Eireann sferic map:

Once again, we have to rely on the Americans to give a better representation of the weather in this country:

Big thunderstorm at 5am in Southwest Mayo, knocked power out over a fairly wide area. Friends of mine in the same area also lost power for 2 hours on Wednesday morning in a thunderstorm.

Another notable feature of this year's weather is the amount of thunderstorms we've had here - some years you'd barely have any in this location, this year I've lost count, plenty of them with good fork action too.

Another morning of thunder and lightning in West Mayo! 3 this week now. We seem to have become the Florida of Ireland.

Aran Islands looks like they're getting a show too.

Long rumble of thunder West of Galway now getting very dark

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,233 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Thunder near Tralee early this morning , out walking on the coast this afternoon and didn't go to far from the car watching the big clouds, some very heavy showers of rain and hail this afternoon but blows over fairly quickly.

A loud rumble of thunder here near Castlebar in the last few minutes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,238 ✭✭✭Oneiric 3

Was nearly blinded by a flash of flickering lightening there a few mins ago.

    New Moon

I think I saw that same flash of lightning from Longford.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,238 ✭✭✭Oneiric 3

Wherever the strike/s occurred, it was obviously very powerful. The thunder hit here over a minute after those blinding flashes.

We had some brilliant thunder after 3am in NW Donegal lasted a good 30/ 40 mins must have been very close a lot of sound and flashes on top of each other. It rattled the house and windows a few times!
