Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

USA need to vary their corners more.

Back to the England from before the Iran game. Really unimpressive so far.

Pulisic the best player on the pitch for me.

    Henderson coming on.

USA are playing well but I think they lack the final bit of quality to get a goal. I hope I'm wrong.

England to - inexplicably - nick it 1-0.

Game is opening up a bit now, England pushing up a lot.

Get Foden on, Saka and Mount have been poor tonight.

Expecting a Rashford late winner vs a tired US defence.

England are boring but defensively look very good.

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

Shaw has been fairly shite. Maguire has been quite good. Stones as got away with some lack of awareness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,705 ✭✭✭Schwiiing

how is that not a card for musah? did the ref leave them at home? shaw, moore, dest and musah should have 1 each

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,168 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Grealish greatest talent is buying endless frees always flinging himself around.

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

Grealish is a cheat end of. Surprised he doesn't have to go to for a check up every match the amount he throws himself to the turf

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 33,255 CMod ✭✭✭✭ShamoBuc

Best chance of the game for England, Kane wasn't too far off a better connection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,090 ✭✭✭trashcan

Oooh. Thought it was about to happen there. They wouldn’t deserve it. US have been very good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,705 ✭✭✭Schwiiing

    add maguire to that

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 33,255 CMod ✭✭✭✭ShamoBuc

Lack of quality in tonights game. USA the better team. England will be happy with the draw.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,289 ✭✭✭✭rob316

How don't you sub on foden, it's bad enough you start sterling ahead of him. England wasting a stacked squad with this manager.

That was a really poor game- very boring imo.

Not sure why the US didnt push more in the end a draw did nothing for them

The US will rue that McKennie missed chance.

You can't tell me Trippier is better than Alexander Arnold?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,914 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

I think he is an overall better player than Trent. Trent can be a liability against better sides.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Apparently tonight is the joint-lowest tally of shots (6) England have mustered in a World Cup game since the 1990 World Cup when they played...Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,501 ✭✭✭✭martyos121

A real loser's mentality from England tonight. You end the game leaving two of the best attacking players in their positions in Foden and Trent on the bench when you can wrap up top spot with just one goal.

As I said before, this stage of the competition doesn't bring the best out of England, but when it gets to the pointy end they don't have enough bravery to get them over the line either. They aren't lacking in quality this year.

Football won't be coming "home" this winter, unless they let Thiago Silva or Lloris bring the trophy home for a night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭cmac2009

Cliche after cliche from Kane and Maguire.. no easy games at a world Cup etc. You just won 6-2 a few days ago.

Boring game. Maguire for all the talk actually played well. Solid at the back. Grealish, although only on for half of second half, I’ve never seen a man fall over so much from the slightest touch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,081 ✭✭✭Fromvert

Southgate is going to get caned when they go out and he's only thrown on TAA and Foden when desperation kicks in and he's chasing a game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,501 ✭✭✭✭martyos121

You didn't see Neymar play only 24 hours ago then?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,030 ✭✭✭pavb2

It was a typical Southgate performance

USA will be delighted it was always a two game strategy and most importantly it’s still in their hands a win against Iran and they’re through

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,246 ✭✭✭Esse85

All the English talent on show and they couldn't score a goal against the US.

That's on Southgate. Had them defending way too deep from the off.

    Conservative is his middle name.

    Kane is a worry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,041 ✭✭✭Pipmae

Kane shouldn't start the next match. Neither should Saka. Foden and Rashford instead.

Trippier has been the best full back in the league probably. Nothing wrong with that selection. Trent has not been good, and he's rarely been good for england and won't be unless they drastically change their style

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,640 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Thought they were very cynical in the first half. There were 2 fouls from trippier followed by another by stones within about 5 minutes, 3 frees given but no cards. All just breaking up attacks and stopping breaks. Gareth won't be complaining about the refs not acting on those.

What? The draw nothing didn't change the chances of qualifying much over a loss like a couple of percent a win changes it massively and means they have more avenues to qualify as well as a better **** of topping the group.

Not sure what that has to do with winning the last game and they are through, the best strategic play was to go for the win but they didn't push much at all late on

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

It protected their chances of qualifying. Had they lost, it was no longer all ok their own hands.

Had they lost tonight, but beat iran and Wales won the last game they'd be out.

A draw tonight and a win v Iran and they're through regardless of other game. They kept it in their own hands.

They were out on their feet and we're starting to concede cheap free kicks. They conceded late on to Wales due to such a lazy, tired foul. They showed much better game management, against a team who despite playing poorly, still had players on the pitch who could easily transition the ball from their box to a go and score

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,795 ✭✭✭✭tom1ie

For England to play further up the pitch they need to drop mcguire- which Southgate won’t do- he’s far too conservative.

If they lost Wales need to beat england by about 4 goals to over come then and they still need to win via Iran anyways

The win trade if via the loss trade off is the smart bet every time it's very simple.

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

Not entirely. If they lost they'd be going in with a minus goal difference though and A 2-0 win for Wales (highly unlikely) puts them ahead of they win only 1-0.. they'd both the have the same goal diffence, but then be down to goals scored.

So a draw tonight and a win guarantees them. A loss and a win doesn't.

They could easily go 1-0 down and that becomes 2 with the capability of the opposition if they show up.

    They showed good game management.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,053 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

The England camp, players and manager, seemed very happy with tonight's result. They kept stressing the clean sheet. Were they annoyed at conceding 2 to Iran?

Shows their lack of ambition imho.

Dude you a missing the point I think on purpose.

Wales are -2 already and the USA will be need to be Iran so plus 1 on that game so Wales need at least a 3 0 win

The loss would cost the under 2% of there chnaces to qualify a win would add 25% maybe more and possibility at better draws in the next round.

It was far from good game management it was an oversight by the manager

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

Youre missing the point as well then.

Had USA lost tonight they're also on a minus, albeit only -1. So say they win 1-0 v iran, a 2-0 for Wales is good enough for Wales to finish 2nd on goals scored as they'll be level.

The draw makes a 1-0 a guarantees qualification no matter the other match.

They can't finish to save their lives. Points on the board and work on just winning the next game.

This last bit I'm deleting is wrong re england and Wales v each other. Wales need to win way And hope Iran v us is a draw which I don't think will be

Again the cost of about 2% chance loss at qualifying for at minimum 25% gain with possible better draws in next round is very worth it

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

You're missing the fact that they were dead on their feet. England were finally starting to poke holes and get the odd chance. They were losing the ball more carelessly in their own half a lot. Going for it and losing would've seen it out of their own hands to a certain degree.

It's tournament football. Had they been told before tournament a win in last game guarantees next round they'd take that over it might see them through.

Had they lost they'd be getting asked why they're on 1 point when they should really be on 6

None of that matters to anything I'm saying, they noticeable looked happy with the draw it was the wrong call by a large and measureable distance and the management messed up. All I'm saying is factual what you are saying isn't.

Im not going to clog up the thread anymore with anymore back and forth. So I'll leave it there

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

There was rarely a point when they dominated possesion, shaded it at times but england held on to it a bit more again the last 20 mins. USA could couldnt get a close to getting a shot in the last 30, were giving the ball away more than england , having to put in more tackles. England lumped a few balls long as they had pace to chase it and get into shape behind forcing USA to try and find someway of getting it back up.

I don't think they had anything left in the tank at all. Their final ball was just lacking for the end of it and england were looking like they could very quickly get up the pitch or draw a cheap frew

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,053 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I think USA just suffer from what a lot of countries do now....lack of a good front man.

So many pass it around well enough, but there's nothing much happening in the final third. Its corners and frees they hope for.
