This tournament will be remember as the Qatar 0-0 World Cup. Seems these 0-0 results are the real player protests.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,172 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Afraid not, being critical of FIFA or Qatar is nothing new, it’s when one brings the US, ,Saudi, Yemen along as further references coupled with four or five posts in a row that leads one to believe there is more ‘dog whistling than on ‘One Man and his Dog’

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭Man Vs ManUre

No need for Ronaldo to come back to Europe after Portugal are knocked out. He can even thumb a lift to Saudi Arabia and join up with his new club.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭Man Vs ManUre

    Ronaldo cheating again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,662 ✭✭✭Seathrun66

Nice try, but using terms in public that you don't understand doesn't reflect well on your teacher.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,662 ✭✭✭Seathrun66

I'd take up the US and Yemen references with Fandymo who introduced them.

And how generous of you to continue to entertainingly continue to use 'dog-whistling' inappropriately. Tp paraphrase the Princess Bride, "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

An absolute shîtload of empty seats in that Portugal Vs Ghana game. Brazil vs Serbia which has just kicked off has some but a higher percentage of the seats are sold by my reckoning.

Well it was the wrong climate because they had to actually move it to the winter which is total nonsense.

Why should Qatar want to build a football profile. They don't give to shitts about football never have and never will. So why even try let them build a profile that they have zero interest in carrying on going forward. When the world cup is gone Qatar will probably bull doze the stadiums.

Small countries do host sporting events but a country the size of Qatar should never be hosting the world's largest sporting event and think even you know that. You strike me as someone who love's to argue. Well argue with yourself.

Uefa should have pulled the European teams out from the start. I think most right minded person knows this is a farce. Qatar bought the world cup. I'm watching it but you actually know like most it should not be there. If you don't i think you need to give your head a wobble and have a lie down.

Sorry, what's your problem? You said earlier it's something you think people should care about and protest, and we're agreed on that. All I wanted to know was why, when people do claim to care, other people arbitrarily decide they're just virtue signalling or they didn't care soon enough. What does that achieve? I appreciate you taking the time away from your own protests to not bother answering my question. Good luck.

It's a bit rich for some of these cocaine and dope fiends to be whining about human rights abuses, when their own behaviour directly funds criminal enterprises that are far worse.

    Its hypocrisy at its finest.

    That’s true actually.

So Qatar should have got the World Cup.

    edit - to clarify - 😂😂😂

War in Ukraine, cost of living crisis, climate catastrophe, and you know that all Ronaldo cares about are his records, reputation, money and looks. The man defines obnoxious narcissism. The Donald Trump of football - but, unfortunately, with much more talent.

I don't agree with Qatar holding the world cup, but they own Paris St Germain and have a busy football league ( I'm pretty sure Gareth Bale nearly ended up there and Pep Guardiola played there as well) so it is incorrect to say they do not care about football.

People in Qatar love football, it is pretty much their number 1 sport. But the thing is, they are fairly useless at it and always have been. They have no history of being a sporting nation. Maybe if flying an eagle around the desert is a sport, they can win gold at the olympics.

    Fantastic win for Iran!

A thing isn't what it says it is.

A thing is what it does.

Could have been 3 or 4.

Makes the England win even more impressive.

Looks like Qatar are on the way home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭Man Vs ManUre

Lol. They can take Qatar Airways one of the best airlines in the world. Takeoff from Doha, circle round the country and back down again, total flight time 30mins.

Someone from Saudi recently told me ' Westerners are not the spokesperson for humanity' and he's right. As hard as that might be to swallow..

A historical one! And another unexpected result, I'll stop counting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,545 ✭✭✭rogber

For hundreds of years westerners believed it was their job to enlighten savages around the world. Despite a few apologies here and there for colonialism, not an awful lot has changed deep down

Let’s not get carried away, there are still a good few spots where the “savages” need a bit of enlightening.?

Historic and unexpected?? Iran are ranked 20th in the world, Wales are ranked 19th. Hardly Earth-shattering.

Wait, so the US aren't taking the knee?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭Man Vs ManUre

I wonder what wud have happened if the queen had lived another month or 2 and died now during or at start of this World Cup?? I think it would have to keep going as per schedule. Would England keep playing?? I think they would. Hmmmm.

    🥴

well we know now there’s absolutely only one other nation that would. That in the shadow of England; and all the bullshit tokenry be grateful we are not here

There is a cracking story on the athletic focussed on them basically trying to buy sports people, footballers etc (including Ailton and a few other Brazilians) FIFA had to change the rules...but I still think very few of the Qatar team are Qatari citizens.

One really interesting non football one is a formerly Kenyan runner...a lot of money involved unsurprisingly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,567 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Tell the Saudis the same, because freedom of speech isn’t a thing there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,322 ✭✭✭archfi

list of players not born in country they play for, it doesn't mention if they have a connection to the country they play for though I guess most do (FIFA rules etc). Most can be guessed by their surnames.

A thing isn't what it says it is.

A thing is what it does.

Wales were called 'England B', but we've got France B, C and D in Tunisia Senegal and Cameroon ...

I can't help finding this world cup utterly intriguing. And I prefer it not being in summer. Watching soccer games in summer always felt like a waste of valuable summer time.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Why do RTE have the pundits standing around at half-time but sitting before and after the matches? Bit odd.

McKinney would do well in Croke Park.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,684 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

Kane looked like he'd just started the game nevermind played 90+ minutes in Qatar

USA Iran going to be a cracker

The US are a serious side

  • Very poor game, feel asleep during it at one point.

Pretty young US squad they look fit. Won't be easily rolled over you would think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,381 ✭✭✭Yurt2

Plenty of the US side play with good sides in Europe. Lots of people sleeping on their ability to go further. Probably lack a bit of cutting-edge but they have quality all around the park.

    Qatar 2022 ... a mixed bag for me ..

Some good games .. some surprises ... but too many 0 0 draws ... early days yet though ...

Qatar I agree is a strange place to hold it ... and it has no real history in the world cup ... I never remember them in it before ...

Some people talk of keeping football and politics separate ... some talk of FIFA corruption ... some say rewarding dictatorships or oppressive countries is wrong ... others say it will help change these places ...

One thing is for sure ... Qatar is not the first and far from the worst place it was held ... Nazi Italy had it in 1934 ... Far right military junta Argentina had it in 1978 .... Putin's Russia ... albeit before he went totally mad ... had it in 2018 ... what made Qatar different is that unlike Russia, Italy and Argentina it has no world cup history ...

    The football ...

Best performance ... Spain 7 Costa Rica 0

    Best match ... Portugal 3 Ghana 2

    Best comeback ... Iran 2 Wales 0

Best team ... I'd have said England earlier but now maybe France so far ...

Biggest surprise ... Saudi Arabia 2 Argentina 1

Worst performance ... Costa Rica 0 Spain 7

Worst match ... all the 0 0 ones esp Denmark/Tunisia and England/USA ... some really bad matches ...

Worst team ... well, Qatar so far !!

    Love the Woke hypocrisy

Corporations push BS White man so evil

Same Corporations sponsor Qatar World Cup

Qatar hellhole by all accounts for non nationals

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,172 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Why would they go there if such a “hellhole”.

Come from a worse “ hellhole “ perhaps?

Refs have enough to worry about apart from timekeeping. Make football a normal sport by having a clock that everyone can watch.

Hard to judge Iran. They came in with many other worries on their backs that other teams don’t have and they looked a lot better against Wales.

2 good games this evening. Argentina v Mexico could be a classic.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

    Lets go Australia

They are great to watch. Always a joy watching a fresh young team playing it around quickly with pull towards goal the whole time.

Unfortunately they can't seem to find finishes. It's hard to see where goals are going to come from. Their best bet is nearly someone gets knocked over for a penalty.

The England team seems to be focusing more on LGBT rights than the games at hand. The world cup is a massive achievement for a country to qualify for, and every player wants to win the world cup but football has been destroyed by political agendas.

England captain Harry Kane, led the squad from the team coach into the dressing-room at the Khalifa International Stadium before the 6-2 win over Iran wearing a $950,000 Rainbow Rolex (again a political statement).

Seven European teams had gone public with their intent to wear rainbow-coloured “One Love” armbands to promote inclusivity and LGBTQ+ rights. What about focusing on football? The reason they are there to begin with.

The German team covered their mouths for the team photo before the match in a powerful protest against FIFA’s decision to ban rainbow-themed armbands.

Belgium star Eden Hazard says Germany should focus on football rather than “political messages” after its shock World Cup loss to Japan. Hazard also stated “We’re here to play football, I’m not here to convey a political message.”

He was backed by Switzerland star Granit Xhaka, who's stated 'I don’t think we need to do anything as the Swiss team, we need to respect the rules and concentrate on our football, that’s all I intend to do."

“We’re here to play football and not hand out lessons to anyone.”

    The Rolex watch Kane wore.
