Well anyone looking for an old fashioned murder mystery, to tide them over before Knives Out 2, might do well here; stars Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan and looks like a lot of fun. Definitely giving off good "cup of tea and a biscuit" energy.

    A good ensemble cast

My immediate wonder has been how good Rockwell's English accent will be; wouldn't have thought of him as a voices guy.

Saoirse Ronan looks like she's having a blast here - you love to see it, especially with an actual Irish accent!

Getting released next week in the UK so I'd expect the same in Ireland. I'm very much looking forward to it, the trailer and cast are both great 😁

Oh I forgot about this; hope it's good 'cos it just looks ... cosy.

Looks like something the wife would like.

What is it about Adrien Brody that irritates me so much though? I've never been able to put my finger in it. Ever since I first saw him in 'The Thin Red Line', my skin crawls at the very sight of him. 😕

Opening this weekend, though something tells me it'll arrive on Disney+ quick enough all the same.

I was really looking forward to this(love an old murder mystery)but alas its pretty poor. It has a serious pacing issue, and I'm not sure if thats an editing or directing problem, but a lot of the scenes just end up falling flat. Sam Rockwell is very good as is Saoirse Ronan and it looks the part cinematography wise, but overall I'm sad to say that its just not very good.

Saw it last night and was a little bit underwhelmed. I always like Sam Rockwell but he was a bit underused I thought, and Saoirse grates at first, though she endears a bit more eventually. (Very slight spoiler - she still looks a bit too young to have 2 offspring - I thought they were her siblings initially). Opening half scenes have a bit of a 'Grand Hotel Budapest' feel - imitating the intensely irritating Wes Anderson is a big no-no for me. (And the actor playing Dickie Attenborough was way too tall).

It's not terrible or anything, there's a nice few comic moments, but it's all a bit light and falls the wrong side of being character- instead of plot-driven.

I'd echo the comments above. I saw it earlier this week and left a bit disappointed as well. It's by no means bad but I was expecting much more. The ingredients are all there but the final synthesis just feels a bit lacklustre.

I have to say that if you are not familiar with the plot of The Mouse Trap then a lot of the good parts of this movie are going to pass you by. It is clever at times but maybe a little too high-brow for most audiences

I caught this tonight and enjoyed it, though would acknowledge that it's not at the heights of something like Knives Out. There is something a tad off with the pacing in that the running time is 98 minutes or so, but some parts feel slower than others. The script is pretty good and there is a goo damount of humour throughout, though for me at least it's a sort of knowing humour rather than belly-laughs, which I feel is not quite how the trailer tried to sell it.

Stylistically the cinematography is clearly indebted to Wes Anderson, though doesn't reach the heights of either design or framing that Anderson has perfected. (As a fan of Anderson's work I'll admit that it's a high bar to clear, so it didn't bother me).

All in all I would say if you go in hoping for something good rather than great you'll likely enjoy it, but if you're hoping for a rival to Knives Out you might be a tad disappointed.

Enjoyed it - engaging and funny. Saoirse and Rockwell were great. Main plot and framing gels well, even if the ending is telegraphed well ahead of time for laughs.

    And just dropped on Disney+

Leaving out Saoirse, who was her usual good self, it was poor. Knives Out did it a lot better. I didn't think much of Sam Rockwell to be honest. I see Agatha Christie's husband has become black. Period dramas and black actors in the prominent roles are a complete turn off for me. I can only suspend reality so far.

Totally agree. So many examples of this kind of casting:-

Jake Gyllenhaal - Prince of Persia

    Elizabeth Taylor - Cleopatra

    Johnny Depp - Tonto

    Laurence Olivier - Othello

    Burt Lancaster - Apache

Don't forget my personal favourite ... ... John Wayne as Genghis Khan.

Finally caught this, having missed it in the cinemas then forgot it was on Disney.

I mentioned the whole "Sunday afternoon with a cup of tea" kind of movies and this was precisely that sort; mild peril and danger, bags of wit and charm, reasonable running length and just solid entertainment without fuss. Very much a knockabout wheeze.

Fysh mentioned Wes Anderson and yeah, I can see it; there were definite moments you felt the director was angling for that kind of vibe and aesthetic - albeit without the kind of constant ruler-precision you get with the American director. I saw a touch of Edgar Wright in there too, with a slightly calmer version of his whiplash editing.

Saoirse Ronan just owned the screen, her bumbling but enthusiastic copper reminding that among all her other talents, she has a head for comedy as well. I'd love to see her do more in that field. Sam Rockwell I normally love but I'll admit wasn't sure why he was even in this; his accent wasn't bad, and he seemed perfectly game given the character, but he was so subdued compared with what I know him for.

Oh yes. See below; fun fact, they filmed in an area near where nuclear tests were taking place so there has been a persistent belief this caused cancers in the production.

I don't know what's more ridiculous; Wayne as Temujin or the cancer thing. Wikipedia seems a bit vague on whether or not it's a horrific coincidence as many of the cast had horrific lifestyles. Wayne was on six packs of cigarettes a day apparently.

That said, it's a shame we never see epic historical films any more.

What are you talking about? It was a nuanced, respectful performance 🤡

As to See How They Run, honestly the diverse casting never insisted upon itself; this was such an obviously heightened, playful version of 1950s London, I think it's a bit against the tone of the thing to crib about historical accuracy.

    Presenting

Agatha Christie as a murderous psycho was more egregious than her husband being black!

I wish I liked this more than I did. But for me some of it suffers from being overwritten (the whodunnit), and other parts suffer from being underwritten (the characterisation and background colour). It gets too distracted on unsatisfying tangents to ever really work in the way a good murder mystery usually does: there's just too much going on. Especially seeing it in close proximity to the much more dynamic and vibrant Glass Onion, there's an inescapable sense that this one is a few drafts away from really working.

Full credit to Saoirse Ronan, though: she's a delightful and charismatic presence here, running rings around the rest of the cast and indeed the material she's working with.

On the whole a disappointment - Ronan is brilliant, a big fan of Ruth Wilson and Brody, but the whole thing doesn't really come together.

I'm normally a big fan of Sam Rockwell but I think the "subdued" comment above nails it for me - the character didn't work or interest me and surely a bit more energy/direction would have helped that work more.

I did like the cinematography - particularly the snow scene towards the end.
