The 2020-21 McCorry final being played this weekend.

    Belvo playing Lansdowne.

It was split into two groups. Group A was Lansdowne, Clontarf, Belvo and Barnhall

Group B was Terenure, Old Wesley, Trinity and UCD

Now we ended up conceding all our games sadly, think for one of them most of the side was away and then an ex classmate of the team sadly took his own life. I think Wesley ended up conceding v Trinity after taking a big beating v UCD in Round 1. Clonarf's results are very surprising

    Group 1

    Clontarf 10 - Belvo 44

    Barnhall 15 - Lansdowne 42

    Lansdowne 36 Clontarf 0

    Belvo 24 Barnhall 3

    Barnhall 43 Clontarf 12

    Belvo 28 Lansdowne 24

    Group 2

    UCD 48 Wesley 0

    Trinity 27 UCD 24

    Final in Lakelands this Sunday

Academy places being confirmed at the moment

Oisin Michel is joining Connacht https://twitter.com/leinsleadernews/status/1525904117977124864

Good announcement, thought he looked good in the bits I saw of him for the 20s.

Any more word on Connacht Academy places?

I presume Matthew Devine is in (doesn't seem to be atm), and had read elsewhere they'd also signed Shane Mallon.

Don't think Connacht had any 20s reps apart from Devine, but could be wrong.

Interesting stats to note on the Academies this year:

Leinster and Munster have given a good amount of game time to some academy players, but Ulster & Connacht haven't given a minute of game time to any of their academy players thus far.

Leinster have used 7 separate academy players, for a combined 17 appearances, 8 starts. It's a total of 715 minutes of game time.

Munster have used 6 separate academy players for a combined 16 appearances, 7 starts. Combined total of 689 minutes of game time.

Rob Russell has picked up the most minutes (434), starts (5) and appearances (6) for Leinster, and has also chipped in with 6 tries. After that a handful of guys have picked up decent minutes - Chris Cosgrave (90 mins, 2 appearances, 1 start & 1 try) and John McKee (95 mins, 5 apps, 1 start & two tries).

On the Munster side - minutes are more evenly spread. Edwin Edogbo has the most appearances (6), but Patrick Campbell the most starts (3) and minutes (248).

Edogbo has 219 minutes and 2 starts, Campbell 248 minutes, 4 appearances and 3 starts and Conor Philips has 160 minutes from 2 starts. Campbell also picked up a try.

Other academy players who've gotten some minutes this year are: Leinster: Charlie Tector (1 app, 19 mins), Ben Brownlee (1 app, 19 mins), Max O'Reilly (1 start, 53 mins) & Alex Soroka (1 app, 5 mins). Munster: Cian Hurley (1 app, 30 mins), Ruadhan Quinn (2 apps, 19 mins), Fionn Gibbons (1 app, 13 mins).

Leinster have also used the most players so far this season in the URC, with 47 players appearing this year, which is one more than both Ulster & Munster who have each used 46 players. Connacht have only used 38 players so far.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21 Sportsmad5

I think it's 47 Munster have used as well. Should rise over next few months, 7 Senior + 8 Academy players have not played in URC this season yet.

Rowntree in his post match interview on Saturday evening said we've used 56, could have been a slip of the tongue or maybe he's including players that were involved v SA but that still wouldn't bring it up from 46/47

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,920 ✭✭✭✭stephen_n

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,466 ✭✭✭✭phog

Didn't think of those but he might well have included them in his count

No, it's 46. I'm only counting competitive games (so just URC so far), no pre-season friendlies or the SA A game (I imagine you're including Kiran McDonald from that).

I've seen this number bandied around multiple times this year, and I genuinely don't know where he got to that number - even if you include the SA A game and the pre season friendlies against Gloucester and London Irish, the number is still just 51 (the 46 who've played in the URC plus Chris Moore, Paddy Kelly, Daniel Okeke, Tony Butler & Kiran McDonald).

It's possible he's including James French and Evan O'Connell in his numbers who were both named in match squads but didn't play, but even if he is (and including all the friendlies) it would be 53.

There are only 62 players in the full extended squad (incl academy), and indisputably all of RG Snyman, Andrew Conway, Jack Daly, Oli Morris, James French, Mark Donnelly, Darragh McSweeney, Kieran Ryan, Evan O'Connell, Ethan Coughlan and Jack Oliver haven't played.

If I count the additional squad players Leinster used in the friendly against Chile, then their players used this season climbs to 57.

Seems kind of overstocked with props in the overall squad including academy. Anyone likely to be let go?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 733 ✭✭✭Hey_Ho_Lets_Go_3

Not with 4 likely off to the world cup and Healy nearing the end.

Players will move but not this summer

  • Registered Users Posts: 21 Sportsmad5

Thanks, I looked at it many times and could not spot it, sure he was way out on the wing.

Agreed - Leinster will likely be down 5 props during the World Cup period (before, during and after)

Porter, Furlong, Healy with Ireland and Ala'alatoa with Samoa and Abaladze probably with Georgia.

They'll need as many as they can until Christmas next season at least.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,336 ✭✭✭theVersatile

Out of curiosity, are you ranking by current ability or potential? Or a combination?

    Regardless, I'd have:

    O'Tighernaigh above O'Connell

Moloney above Stephens (mind I've seen very little of the latter so could easily change)

    Devine over Gunne

    Butler over West

    Brownlee and Cooney over Gavin

Haven't seen enough of Kenny to consider moving him below O'Connor.

This is a tough time of year to do it. I’ve heard very good things about some new inductees, (BOC, Hicks, Kenny, especially) but not sure how much weight to put on that.

The only changes i’d feel strongly about are putting mccarthy at top of LH list. Also keep him one at THP. I’d put McNabney at 2 on 6/8 list and Quinn at 3 there. And also keep Quinn one on the 7 list.

Bar a few exceptions most players come from a schools/fee schools background. What would people here change to improve the rate of players making the academies and the pro game from other areas on top of whats happening already or what would people like to see happen to improve this?

At Scrum-half you haven't included Ethan Coughlan from Munster - I'd have him ahead of Ben Murphy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,466 ✭✭✭✭phog

I'm not sure how this would work but I always felt that underage coaches/team managers should be encouraged to list X number of players that have stood out to them from opponents that have played their team/s. The lists to be collated by regional/provincial talent spotters and those listed to be taken into regional/provincial training camps and further accessed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,551 ✭✭✭ulsteru20s

A 50/25/25 funding model from the irfu/club/schools to hire coaches for non traditional rugby areas. Tie a school and a club together with some irfu backing.

You would see some failures, some no changes and maybe or or two areas would really pop.

Inspired by an article i vaguely remember about this happening organically in places. I think jackman mentioned it somewhere as well. Maybe do two in each province to start. Or maybe 3 each in connacht, ulster and munster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,186 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

I dont think that is necessarily going to work because it doesnt mean the right players would be highlighted/selected anyway.

Relying on the volunteer coaches to do this work isnt right when we have full time professional coaches/development officers whos role is entirely around doing this work

By all means have more open screening sessions for age grade squads and players invited to attend but not that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,466 ✭✭✭✭phog

I'm not going to get into a 100 post reply on this but coaches seeing other players and passing their names onto the professionals that you mention can only help highlight someone to them that they may have missed.

BTW, I love your hard and fast dismissal of the very first idea posted in reply to your question, it will surely encourage others to that the time to reply.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,551 ✭✭✭ulsteru20s

I think the provinces already have this aspect covered to a large degree. They know who the good players are these days mostly. This was a problem 10/15 years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,186 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Its an interesting idea. Funding that from some schools/clubs could be an issue like Regis Sonnes coming to Bandon was a load of luck. he had a connection to the club in form of someone who knew him and they had a fee paying school in bandon grammar with €€€ that many areas mightnt have

Ballina tried it with one of their kiwi AIL players a few years back, even giving him access to a car for a while but got a sanction from IRFU about payment of player etc for it.

The provinces already do this. Its beyond this that they need to be doing more. just getting recommendations of players isnt whats needed its changing/improving what the clubs do is what the provinces should be helping with.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,336 ✭✭✭theVersatile

Agreed. For some reason, I thought Coughlan had moved onto a development deal this year.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 16,313 Mod ✭✭✭✭Quin_Dub

    Not yet anyway.

He's likely the starting Scrum-half for the start of the season with Murray/Casey with Ireland and Patterson injured so he might get upgraded.

Similarly Butler should get decent game time as there's only him and Carbery there for the moment.
