New driving rain index for Ireland. Dark blue areas are extreme.

Rainfall map updated as well. Mean annual rainfall (mm) for the climate normal 1991 – 2020 in the Republic of Ireland below

Having lived years in both Kerry and Mayo? Mayo is definitely a more extreme and rigorous climate than Kerry. And both pale in comparison with Orkney... And I have met overseas folk when market /street trding who come here for the rain... Yes it can be arduous but there are far worse things than bad weather... Loud wind all night again

I must be the only one who isn’t too bothered with the rain…I don’t mind as long as it doesn’t happen during the summer months. Looking forward to a break from it all the same when it does inevitably arrive…

The weather this year has gone from very dry and settled to very wet. Will be interested to see does this average out rainfall totals in various regions by year end.

I don’t mind the rain. It’s the bloody dark in winter I hate. The short days kill me. I can manage rain and wind, indeed I love a good storm but I find winter hard for the lack of light. I think that’s more depressing than anything. even if it’s mild I have to light the fire just for my mental health! That seems to make things better! Although even that’s been ruined by the cost of fuel. Anyway looking forward to the drier spell coming up!

SAD... Me too but there are special lamps that will help greatly . It is not mental but a simple physical response to lack of LUX... Bears hibernate. We insist on making no changes. SAD lamps are your friend.. At this season The lamps replace that. I can sleep up to 18 / 24 hours... Rip van Winkle ...

Met have confirmed Valentia's wettest autumn on record that I have mentioned, and Cork Airport too.

In no way surprised. Have felt every bit of it.

Reading people's reactions to the weather above is interesting and shows how much we all vary, what does and does not trigger us and what we each individually enjoy. What I get annoyed about is people telling you to get over whatever it is that you hate, be that rain or extreme heat. The effect of environmental factors on people's physical and mental health has been so well documented that it's important to give people a break and respect their views. Nobody here on boards.ie knows the back story of any poster.

Today was the kind of day I love [here in Kerry]. A still, quiet winter's day and I made hay 😀 Somebody just posted that they don't mind the rain but hate the dark. Now I'd be the opposite. I actually like the dark winter days once they're quiet and still and cold doesn't bother me in the slightest. In fact I like it. It's the incessant rain, wind and constant grey that I can't stand.

Moral of the story. We live on an island of significant weather variations. A pretty corner of the world no doubt, but an overall poor climate which actually is a deal breaker for some. Let's respect each other's differences and let's enjoy some settled weather when it returns and hopefully, according to forecasts, that will be soon.😄

I am becoming more and more nocturnal as the gales sweep in. I can now detect the airt ( Orkney for direction) from the sound.. Another wild wuthering withering wet night.. A challenging reality.

I need to get to the turf bags today that are out at the back area that faces north. Now THAT will be an interesting excursion.

And my SAD lamp is helping. Look them up? Not expensive and a real support in the darker days of winter. Natural remedy

OUCH! What a BLAST that was...old saying that what can't be cured must be endured... somehow

And it IS exhilarating and challenging.. WILD... and louder it gets...

Another day of misery here in the South East. There's a band of rain out to the Irish sea and the edge of it just won't shift away. Drier conditions look to be following from the west so hopefully it clears soon enough.

    14° on 26th November!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,227 ✭✭✭pad199207

14°c at any point in winter is not very unusual in Ireland. Also you could say that we are technically not in winter yet.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,396 ✭✭✭esposito

We’ve had 14C many times in December and January over the years. Definitely not unusual due to our geographic location and an ocean beside us.

On an optimistic note, I've been looking at the sunset times for here in Dundalk. Todays sunset is at 16:12 while the earliest sunsets are due on the 13th and 14th of December where its 16:02. So only another 10 minutes to lose in the evenings.

Interesting comments the last page or so...

But picked out Bill's comment and have to say I disagree somewhat, no way would I have preferred the rain more spread-out throughout the year! I'd much rather backend the load we get of rain into a few months like October and November and be done with it for the most part.

Of all the weather we get, relentless wind is my peeve hate. I'd hate to live in the west or up in the flatlands of the northern midlands where calm is a rarity, or so it seems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,634 ✭✭✭✭Graces7

Now we do get a lot of calm.. especially these times at night.. whole nights with not a breath and ... ocean breezes are very bracing... I would never live anywhere but the West Coast.

    West Mayo offshore..

Just read the warning for tonight. The farmer next door has had cattle out grazing... At the end of November....

Would I be right in saying that this wind event will not bring much rain? I am planning a long walk tonight but I'd prefer just wind. Galway.

And is there any way for me to remove all Grace's eagles when viewing weather threads on the mobile? 😂 I think it's an image linked to a signature link? All I see are eagles...

Off for the night now so no more birds!

    They are a protected species...

Sure don't mind me. Work away. Maybe you could tweak the link somehow that does not show the picture? I am not very technical when it comes to these things.

I think there is a setting in boards you can set to hide signatures. Or at least there used to be.

Overcast and mild in southern Laois - max of 13.0c on the AWS and not much lower than that presently. Damp day out there.

Windy on the Galway prom. High tide too so wild seas.

It might have been mild today but really it was pointless.

So windy and that horrible damp air, you wouldn't stay out in it for long.

That's why I just had to hit the shops for some Black Friday deals🤷‍♀️😉.

Gotten noticeably warmer here in Carrick, wind has pick up some gusts but not damaging

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,980 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

Today could be the last fairly mild day for quite a while. From tomorrow temperatures will begin to slide away slowly day by day, in the single digits from Monday/Tuesday and perhaps only mid single digits from next weekend onwards if the models stick with the colder theme all the way into the first half of December.

I'd say coastal regions of Kerry and Mayo have roughly the same levels of 'rigorous extremes'. Inland Kerry and Mayo would be more different, and more so felt given that Mayo, in general, is a colder county than Kerry. Strong, warm winds never feels as brutal as colder winds of same strength for example.

I would disagree slightly regarding the rain in Ireland. Rarely is it ever 'incessant'. The last known continuous rainfalls I recall here in Galway was back in November 2009. Ordinarily, singular rainfall events in Ireland rarely last no more than a few hours at most but it does often look like it is raining when isn't, given the prevalence of those slate grey low skies we endure.

Probably ,, I did not live on the coast in Kerry, but mountains an d now offshore . I enjoy it though . and the challenge is good. Keeps me alert. Mayo has always been my favourite county.

These foam ear plugs are cheap and very good to take the edge off the sound.

    Heavy hailstones in Galway.

Torrential hail shower and a gusty wind. Was a pretty benign day up until now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,634 ✭✭✭✭Graces7

Ah thanks, but I need to hear what is going on especially in bad weather with critters and all. I have ear plugs somewhere..

Bye bye autumn 2022, you won't be missed. One of my least favourites.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,066 ✭✭✭appledrop

Have to agree sryanbruen, windy and very wet is what I'll remember it for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,687 ✭✭✭Rougies

Perfect autumn for me. Mild, windy and wet is exactly what I would expect and hope for, and this one delivered that with the added bonus of thunderstorms. I really don't know what else you guys want from autumn tbh.

I agree totally. Could hardly believe the previous posts. It has been true autumn without the brutality of extremes.. especially out here. Some seasonal dramas,,, else peace and time to walk and gaze at the changes.... Perfect! Especially welcome out here...

It was a horrible autumn here in Cork. The rain was incessant from the minute the drought ended on September 3. I haven't looked at the stats yet but I can't remember a wetter one in my lifetime. Not much sunshine either. A stark contrast to autumn 2021 which was very dry.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,027 ✭✭✭Artane2002

This will be an unpopular opinion but I enjoyed Autumn 2022. It was nice to get a wet September (wettest since 1976 and 6th wettest on record) as well as a cooler one for a change. October continued with the wet theme but unlike September, it had good sunshine. It also gave a nice (for Dublin) thunderstorm on the 19th, an unusual time of year. It was also the second month in a row to breach 100mm, which is rare for Dublin. To me, November has felt sunnier than the statistics (which are good anyway) would suggest. Much of the rain that fell was by night so it could have been a lot worse. Although it was dry for November here, the rain that did fall by daytime became tedious since it's been going on for nearly three months at this stage, so I welcome a drier period with open arms.

Good autumn colours, the only reason why I look forward to this season which I rarely do as I prefer the other 3 greatly. Any leaves that didn't get blown by wind (which there was a fair bit of) were still green. Worst season I have seen for them by a mile.

Very wet, little colour, excessive mild without nice chilly nights. Rubbish.
