The media seem reluctant to show the same ‘concern’ for Afghan women under the Taliban as they do for Iranian women. Why is this?

They are smart enough to know there are enough stupid people who will support them if they say stupid things. And the more stupid the things, the stronger that support will be.

It's like when you get a spam email full of typos and spelling mistakes. That's sometimes done deliberately as the spammer wants only complete idiots to reply. Not half idiots who are slow enough that they respond at the start but might cop on later. They want full idiots.

At this stage I would not be surprised if Mick and Clare became flat earthers. They would argue black is white at this stage.

Should be normal position right across political spectrum, kind of axiomatic "Hitler/Stalin were evil, their only achievements were creating piles of corpses" level stuff when it comes to politics.

If we look beyond Ireland, really only the extreme right / left politicians and the corrupted across Europe are dissenting on the Ukraine war + hold some candle out for Putin.

People who are honest-to-god straight-up fascists, the unreconstructed Soviet style communists in a coma since the 90s, and those bought by Russian money, or who the Kremlin may have some other hold over.

Wallace (+Daly I suppose) have revealed themselves as either dangerous political extremists or people who have been compromised somehow. No other possibilities there (imho).

Could not disagree more with most of that.

This is a quite black and white (or simple) situation, but people very used to conspiratorial thinking when it comes to politics, and/or many, many years of viewing US or the West as mother of all evils on Earth (both could apply to you if you somewhat admire Wallace!) just can't think out of the box they are in to see this issue clearly.

Probably should not have posted above though, as it is not the thread to debate the "rights"/Russian excuses [they are that, despite your denial] and wrongs of invasion of Ukraine, it is done to death elsewhere on site.

There's no sign whatsoever the govt. is taking us (or can take us without considerable public consultation, likely a referendum?) into NATO, but their position (consistent with other members of the EU, supporting Ukraine, apart from weaponry vs deciding to be an odd-ball outlier pushing an illusion of Ireland brokering "peace" with Putin/Russia) is the least they can do.

Anyway to stick in something related to OP at the end, I suppose Wallace criticising Iranian protesters seems maybe even more "out there" than his position on Ukraine war (!)
