Decent first 30 mins but pretty much whistled off the pitch since. Can’t get any territory because there’s a constant stream of Munster penalties.

Connacht will get a few token penalties now that the game is over.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,341 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

Hadn’t realised that Connacht are the lowest try and points scorers in the league. Attack has definitely taken a significant step back. Even if other areas have improved.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,050 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

I have been a constant in the fact that Carty is AIL at best and tonight was another example of how out of his league he is. When will this stop. I did say prior to the game that the Connacht 9 and 10 were better than the Munster 9 and 10. But this was only to point out how rubbish the Munster 9 and 10 are

You are being overly harsh as normal and being dreadfully unfair to both Carty and many AIL players. He wasnt out of his league tonight though some of the missed kicks to touch etc were very poor.

    Who is Connacht's goalkicking coach.

I'm not sure if I should believe the URC website but it lists the kicking success of 12 goalkickers in the league in the stats section. Jack Carty is one of the 12 and is in 12th place with a goal kicking percentage of 33%.

There was nothing at all in attack last night. Don’t know how a team who have shown serious attacking intent in recent seasons can go to looking so clueless.

  • Registered Users Posts: 220 ✭✭AccidentallyOnside

Wilkins has gone from attack to defence I think.

I've wondered about him I the past but the players really seem to rate him and the defence has really improved this year, Munster had us in the maul yesterday where we've really improved but in open play were going nowhere.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,450 ✭✭✭Wegians89

Yeah the defence has picked up a lot this season. If they could talk Nigel back into the coaching staff could have a nice balance

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,965 ✭✭✭connachta

McPhillips back from Bristol as head coach?

Think it's too soon for nigel to come back to be honest.

If Wilkins gets the top job hopefully we get a really experienced specialist coach in for attack.

Was considering putting a bet on Connacht yesterday but didn't in the end. But it did get me thinking as to how the likes of Paddy Power provides betting odds that are normally not far off the mark.

So first thoughts is that team selection is irrelevant as the odds are generated prior to the team selections. So as a fan this is alien as many discussions prior to a match tend to relate to team selections.

So therefore what statistical data is used to generate the odds. So it all clearly comes down to historical results. It is completely dispassionate of playing styles as results identify if the style is likely to be more successful in a specific game.

So clearly home advantage has a loading weight into the algorithm. And then after that it's a simple matter of weighting historical results (this includes historical results against the different teams within the league) to generate the odds.

And I guess if you approach the game with such a dispassionate viewpoint you get a more realistic vision of what is to be expected.

So then from a passionate perspective you would say that our results begs questions of our ability to compete against certain teams and these concerns would need to be addressed if we are to improve our results

The odds often move quiet a bit after the teams are named so team selection is relevant imo.

I would like to see a Hawkshaw Bundee combo tomorrow. Any idea what time the team is out today ?

Scratch that Hawkshaw not in the team at all. I wonder is he injured.

    Strong team named.

  • Registered Users Posts: 755 ✭✭✭Zeugnis

Good to see the Murray/Dowling combination back, two very effective operators, starting pack is strong.

Not for the first time, I feel disappointed by some of the selections. Apart from Hawkshaw, I'd have liked to see Murphy on the bench and Byrne at 14. We are under much less injury pressure this year, unfortunately this means a lot of guys are going to be sitting on their hands while fit to play. Must be frustrating.

  • Registered Users Posts: 220 ✭✭AccidentallyOnside

With Europe coming up I'd expect fringe players to be given loads of time there to stake a claim. Would like to see more of:

    Hawkshaw at 10

    Illo starting

Jennings at fb (this is our main problem position atm)

    Mullins at fb or wing

    Darragh Murray in the row

    Forde anywhere from 10-13.

A few of the above could be in contention for big first team games given a proper run.

Brive in particular will be sending the reserves, may not see Arnold or Big Abe as they'll be looking to get their jiff numbers up.

Seeing Buckley And Marmion on 216 csps each hot me wondering who had the most caps for any if the provinces, its Muldoon on 327. I can't see that every being surpassed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

I agree. Its very unlikely to be surpassed.

You need a player who is good enough to break through early but not good enough to establish himself at international level.

Players who have had more professional games (like Cian Healy, Donnacha O'Callaghan, or Peter Stringer) have 90+ international caps.

Donncha has the highest for munster and Cian will have for leinster next year. Your 100% correct, if both were a little bit less talented they would have over 300 caps each. I have a good feeling about the game tomorrow. Not too bothered about Europe this year, would prefer 8th overall.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,224 ✭✭✭ClanofLams

Six changes. No major issue with any of them but seems like almost every game (bar a couple before the international game I think) since the start of last season has had five or six changes to the team. Can’t be the best way to build.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,386 ✭✭✭macslash

We don't know what's going on at training tbf, and we have a 10 game in a row run so lads will get opportunities to play. I too would love to see more of Byrne but at the same time both wings have changed since last weekend so can't complain too much.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,300 ✭✭✭freyners

Im quite happy to see Killgannen in the team. Any time hes been on the pitch I've liked his aggression with ball in hand, Stade and Ulster games come to mind

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

How much do we feel that Connacht will target Europe this season.

It certainly feels like Brive and Newcastle should be beatable targets which should make for a reasonable path to the quarter final of the challenge cup. Once in the knockouts anything can happen.

That said maybe Connacht would be better off prioritising the league. Getting to the knockout stages or European qualification is likely to be very difficult at this stage.

That said Connacht did have a very difficult start to the league and a much easier last few games. If chasing for a target the easier schedule would certainly help.

  • Registered Users Posts: 330 ✭✭ShineyShiney

Apparently bealham needs to bring his national form back to Connacht🙄 according to RTE. The laziness of it is annoying, he's played out of his skin for every second he's been on the pitch for Connacht this season.

Think We need to be on our game today Treviso are going well. This one could determine the season imo

  • Registered Users Posts: 220 ✭✭AccidentallyOnside

Who's this Wilkinson coach rte are talking about?

Does Donal Lenihan know something we don't?

The laziness of irish pundits is genuinely eye watering.

Last time he commented on us last year he kept speaking about John Pouch......let's see if he's learned his name anyway.

    Yeah I got that :)

That's a genuinely amazing tackle by Boyle. How's he's stopped a try I'll never know.
