Cable for pir

Hi.

What cable do you use to wire a pir which has neutral, live and switched live connections?

I presume that I can't use earth wire with a brown sleeve on it. So what is the correct cabling to use?

Also, if I use 4 core wire, how should the earth be terminated if there is no connection for it and is it therefore not needed and be ignored?

You don't need 4 wires.

Incoming Neutral, Live, Earth

Outgoing Neutral, SL, Earth

The earth just passes through, you don't need to strip it.

I think that the question is more around how to wire these when the screw-contacts aren't wide enough for two T&E copper wires in the neutral or the device just isn't going to take two oval cables and remain water-resistant.

I always used 5core when doing that

It has the blue core, that 4core only has the 3 phase and earth colours

@10-10-20 - that's the cable I was planning on using - with a bit of brown sleeving on the grey wire to use it for the switched live.

How would you terminate the earth in the PIR - or would you snip it? I had thought of either putting a terminal on it or not stripping it and putting tape over the end, but if it isn't to be used why go to the bother?

What colour should be used for switched live?

Am I correct in thinking that as long as earth is only used for earth then I can sleeve the grey wire and use it as switched live? Terminate the earth in a block or Wago and it should be a suitable install?

A 5 core wired back to junction box and you'll have all your colours without sleeving or else 3-core wired in and out direct to light fitting with no jointing

Black and grey are phase colours and don't need sleeving

Earth should be connected at sensor if there is a terminal
