Met Eireann dialling back on the plans for the south coast by the looks of it anyway. Forecasting 1c Tuesday night and 0c Wednesday night as it stands.

There are still many good charts out there and many places will get snowfall in the coming week so not a total bust.

We don't often get snow this early and in 1981 things were a bit like this.

Still I would say coastal areas on the Atlantic will be too mild and there won't be anything 2010 like. Maybe minus 7 or 8 some night.

I really do love this crisp bright dry weather. It was long overdue. Today was absolutely stunning.

But I also love the nights just as much. The roads are dry, the air is dry/crisp and there is something lovely about putting on a coat, hat and scarf and heading out for a brisk walk. The moon was shining bright tonight and it was just wonderful. Winter is great for 'hibernating' after a busy year but any chance to get some enjoyable outdoor exercise is great. I would welcome a month of this weather, I really would.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Unfortunately, the environment is far from dry. Freezing fog in the coming days will be penetrating, unpredictable and dangerous.

Its likely to lead to ice days for some parts, daytime highs below freezing, frost and ice on some routes all through.

Light wintry showers in general, light dusting of snow in places, maybe favours down along the Eastern side of the country on Thursday.

Bitterly cold.. still and chill and silent. A deep silence over land and ocean

it is good that we do not and cannot control the weather. A force beyond us that does not follow or obey.

Many thanks for the expertise of the experts here and for met.ie who have such skill and detail as things change so rapidly...

    A challenge.

Fairly heavy snow showers been picked up for the East later Thurs into Fri by the model below, not too familiar with how accurate it is but worth keeping an eye . A fair bit of shear in the area so possibly good convection and more elevated cloud, might have hail showers there also or graupel perhaps. Again not sure, what ye reckon?

Rain, hail and sleet <150m, snow above.

    For now.

People are getting far too carried away with weather that's perfectly normal in winter.

RTE news were at it as well tonight.

Seems to be a small low pressure feature running down the Irish sea on multiple models Thurs into Fri alright. Personally I'm ignoring it, as I would even it was modeled 24hrs out, but would be quite nice for inland and higher ground east coast if it came off.

2oC here in Waterford atm, think we're in for a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs over the next while so let's enjoy it, be nice to each other, understand that some people are positive and some are negative, it's all good! Just wade through the weeds and come up with your own conclusion without throwing all the toys put of the pram! Alternatively just go to met.ie who are always fairly reliable if you can't handle the angst of the flip flopping long term predictions 😉😂

    P.S. leave grace7 alone, she's a wonderful poster 😊

Very detailed and wintry sounding update this morning from Met Eireann:

    TONIGHT

Mostly dry across Leinster and Munster overnight, but scattered showers will affect Connacht and Ulster, some turning wintry, especially over high ground. Towards dawn, a band of rain, sleet and snow will push south over Ulster. Widespread frost and ice overnight with lowest temperatures of -4 to zero degrees. Some patches of freezing fog developing also.

    TOMORROW - Thursday 8th December

An icy start on Thursday with patches of freezing fog in places. A band of wintry showers over Ulster will track gradually southwards over the country. Some accumulations of snow are possible, especially in Midland counties and over high ground leading to hazardous travel conditions. Maximum temperatures of just 0 to +3 degrees in light north or variable winds.

    National Outlook

Overview: Very cold with sub-zero temperatures by night leading to sharp to severe frost along with icy stretches. Temperatures by day hovering close to zero in most areas. Some hail, sleet or snow showers expected, but a good deal of dry weather overall.

Thursday night: A severe frost will set in quickly after dark and it will turn icy in places. There will be some wintry showers in Atlantic coastal counties of Connacht and Ulster and also for a time in parts of east Leinster. A covering of snow is possible where showers occur. Lowest temperatures of -5 to -2 degrees in a light northerly breeze. Patches of freezing fog developing also.

Friday: Friday will begin very cold with icy stretches, some lying snow and patches of freezing fog. Much of the country will be dry with sunshine developing. Wintry showers will affect some Atlantic coastal counties, possibly heavy or thundery near the coast. Maximum temperatures generally ranging from 0 to +3 degrees in light northwest or variable winds. Another very cold night on Friday night with a widespread sharp to severe frost and some icy stretches. Many areas will be dry but there will be showers affecting Atlantic coastal counties at times, many of hail and snow, but falling as rain near the coast. Lowest temperatures of -5 to zero degrees in light west or variable winds.

Saturday: A very cold day on Saturday with frost and ice lingering through much of the day along with some patches of freezing fog. Dry for many but a few wintry showers will occur. Highest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees in light, variable winds. Widespread frost and ice on Saturday night. Mostly dry with some freezing fog. Lowest temperatures of -5 to zero degrees.

Sunday: Temperatures struggling to rise above freezing for most on Sunday with frost, ice and freezing fog persisting throughout the day. Mainly dry apart from isolated showers in some coastal margins. Highest temperatures of -2 to +2 degrees in light, variable winds. Widespread frost and ice overnight with lows ranging from -6 to -2 degrees. Largely dry apart from isolated wintry showers.

Further Outlook: It looks set to stay very cold on Monday, but thereafter there is lots of uncertainty in the forecast.

That's about the height of it for now.

To be fair nobody on here was over hyping it but the media ramped it and the politicians started going on about fuel poverty etc. then it all got blown out of proportion.

Years ago storms and icy weather was something we just got on with but now there's almost a meltdown if the schools aren't closed when the wind picks up.
