What kind of crowd is at this??

Trying to decide to go to this or Body and Soul. Obviously this has a much better line-up but been to Body and Soul and loved the vide and overall experience of the place.

Impressive line up but I have seen all of those acts bar Candi Staton in the last 5 years, several of them multiple times.

Will consider attending however as its only a short hop from Dublin and Body and Soul has been a malingering mess sense about 2015.

some great acts this year, I loved it last year, but then I've only been to 2 Irish festivals. Already have tickets for next year. Surely they must have more stages for BTP with all these acts?

  • Registered Users Posts: 263 ✭✭citycentre

I've to eat my words after my little rant there but you are right! They have always had the festival on the closest weekend to the Solstice whether that's the one before or after. Last time the Solstice fell on the Wednesday of the week in 2017 they had it the following weekend... This is the first time they haven't followed that rule, so it's fairly understandable why BTP felt it safe enough to schedule that particular weekend this year.

I know they are in competition but it would have been nice if they'd communicated with each other as there's a serious overlap in the target market for both festivals that will only damage them both - moreso B&S as BTP has the benefit of being the fresh new and exciting one.

I'll still be heading to B&S this year as I think Ballinlough Castle is such a beautiful and magical venue with the woodlands and walled gardens. I'm also a lot more excited to see Moderat than any of the BTP lineup so far. Hopefully BTP will hugely improve their setup and make better use of the lovely location than they did last year and the festivals will avoid clashing in future so we can go to both again!

Thats a cracking lineup on the face of it, tho a lot of "DJ sets" in there which can be really hit and miss. If we didnt already have our body and soul tickets we would definitely be giving this a go.

Anyone got a Spotify or Tidal playlist for this? The line up is quite something, made me sit up and take notice. As well as B&S being on around that time please note that Night & Day festival is on the 24th/25th of June in the wonderful Forest Park in Boyle, Co. Roscommon. I think the first announcement is on Jan 20th. LAst years festival was, in a word, lovely 😎

    Announced special announcement on Instagram

Was on it and didn't spot it. Just that it's a legend in music biz which does sound like it could be him alright.

    Not Herbie, female diva.

played ireland a bunch over the years

Grace Jones? That'd be another great name for them if so

    Grace Jones announced

That's a pretty stonking line up there now, some big hitters there.

Body and soul can’t compete on a line up front

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,068 ✭✭✭Ricosruffneck

What is the story with them. Aside from Moderat it was a pretty weak first announcement.

They just seem to be limping from year to year. Are they breaking even.

outgunned and outspent by other festivals over last few years has made it impact diminishing. Gambled on headliners over the years that just didn’t work or draw crowds hoped for.

bad programming as well. Mogwai played to a few hundred people last year on the Sunday evening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,405 ✭✭✭Fanirish

Plus people Artist expectations even though b&s 10 times smaller than EP but roughly same price.

  • Registered Users Posts: 377 ✭✭Whipping Boy

    Nice lineup.

Trying to decide between this and Otherside Festival. Doesn't seem to be many reports on the latter - was anyone there last year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,694 ✭✭✭✭bodhrandude

How can this small festival afford all these big acts, I tell you something there's going to be a lot of clashes at this one. Also the dates in the thread title are wrong its 16th - 18th June not 10th - 12th June.

New festivals lose money in their first few years, overdeliver in initial years, build up reputation and sort out organisational issues. Increase capacity year by year and then you eventually have a successful festival.

investors in festivals know this. How else do you think EP/forbidden fruit etc going. They weren’t profitable for years

  • Registered Users Posts: 992 ✭✭✭crl84

Thread was started for the 2022 festival, and those were the dates.

Can't edit it to change, and people have just used this thread for the 2023 festival....

What does free flow mean? Can bring cans into music away from campsite?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,405 ✭✭✭Fanirish

Free flow = free to bring booze wherever you like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,609 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

So to me it looks like the line up is way bigger than last year. Will there be extra stages? All I remember is the main stage and a little tent, and some kind of DJ 360 booth thingy. But then I was pretty f*cked up for 3 days.

The tent was not that small, maybe 2-3k capacity, I was there on the Sunday and saw Lisa Hannigan (it was packed), the 360 DJ thingy was pretty cool. Under pressure I bought weekend tickets , the biggest issue last year for me was the sound cutting out multiple times during Orbital. If similar happens this year I will be holding a one man picket/demonstration outside in 2024!

As far as I know, capacity is the same this year so they will hardly add more stages. I thought the site worked well.

Body and Soul have put themselves out of the competition. It's not a music festival anymore.

  • Registered Users Posts: 299 ✭✭Jambonjunior

    Is BTP free flow?

I didn't see it mentioned on the website.

More Campervan / Caravan tickets are going on sale Tuesday 10am if anyone's interested.

Big on the all mouth and trousers scene

  • Registered Users Posts: 400 ✭✭SoundOfSilence

Raged!! I'm locked into the payment plan with body and soul. I made the decision to go there due to the fact there were no camper tickets available for BTP.

Whoop whoop, Dope Lemon have been announced for BTP this week!

They've some great songs and missed then when they played Dublin recently, check them out on YouTube/ Spotify etc 👍

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,609 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

are they bothering with that "posh" camping mullarkey this year? i paid for it last year but i don't really know what it was i paid for

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,466 ✭✭✭Mrs Shuttleworth

This 100%. I've never been to B&S but really want to see Moderat so that's the decision made for better or worse. Great lineup for BTP and gutted I'm missing Grace Jones (although seen her before) and also Thundercat. Huge overlap in the demographic for both festivals and it's mad they didn't work this out. The Grace Jones announcement will probably attract a number of fairweather festival attendees on a day out who wouldn't go otherwise.

    Very quiet in here!

I was thinking maybe someone had created a 2023 thread but no sign so I'll post here

Arts / Late-Night line-up announced today - way more stuff that I'm looking forward to in here than got added to EP last week.

Ridiculously good bill for this for its 5k capacity (and a tragedy that it's clashing with Body and Soul who have also done a great job on bookings)

Mise Freshin' presents Endtroducing - god knows what it'll be like but for now I'm going to assume it will be mindblowingly fantastic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,609 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

no sign of any posh camping this year, which was a bit of a joke last year anyway, but i'm assuming it will just be a free for all RE camping with the posh area open to all?

Really looking forward to this. Does anyone have have any recommendations from the Arts lineup? Chris Kent for example is a brilliant comedian, well worth checking out

  • Registered Users Posts: 992 ✭✭✭crl84

What was the story with showers in general camping last year?

I know there were issues with water supply, but when they were working, was there many, big queues, etc?

Working through a playlist now, and liking the sound of Dope Lemon, kind of Kurt Vile vibes, would be nice on a sunny afternoon on the grass

  • Registered Users Posts: 377 ✭✭Whipping Boy

Tempting fate with the mention of a 'sunny afternoon' :) surely due some good weather after this monsoon-ridden May...

I'm doing ATN as well and - in the hullaballoo over that announcement - BTP took a back seat recently but looking at the lineup again and I'm amazed by the depth of quality on offer. Easily 20 acts I'm really looking forward to seeing.

Christion Loffler had the tent absolutely hopping at ATN last night - very different to his recorded output.

Also very interested to see what set Jape does - it's been a while...

For those there last year - was there much to do outside of the music? Would it be similar to Body & Soul in terms of aesthetics and little surprises around the place?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,806 ✭✭✭✭Pudsy33

My main issue with it last year, bar the sound system crashing during Orbital, was that there was absolutely nothing to do bar the various stages. I was only there for the Sunday so I may have missed something but the arena seemed very small.

  • Registered Users Posts: 377 ✭✭Whipping Boy

Interesting. There certainly seems to a lot going on in terms of comedy, arts, shows etc based on their latest announcement so perhaps they listened to the feedback...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,405 ✭✭✭Fanirish

always the plan to expand offerings.

year 1 was trying to get basics right.

Sure EP and B&S were bare bones in first year or two

  • Registered Users Posts: 218 ✭✭Van Doozy

Can I put in a friendly request that a mod amend the title of this thread to this year's dates?

    16th - 18th June 2023

  • Registered Users Posts: 377 ✭✭Whipping Boy

Van Doozy, will you have the can chiller at BTP this year? Was a godsend the Sunday of ATN!

  • Registered Users Posts: 218 ✭✭Van Doozy

Hi @Whipping Boy . That Sunday at ATN will live on in my memory! It was... relentless!

So yea, TurboChillers is indeed back on the road this summer. We have nothing confirmed yet though.

BTP looks great, it is definitely one I'd like to do. I'll let you know here if we confirm it.

Wherever we end up I'll be sure to include a couple of extra can coolings for any boardsies who intend to use the service...

  • Registered Users Posts: 377 ✭✭Whipping Boy

Fantastic, fingers crossed we see you guys there and that we get a repeat of that Sunday weather!
