Been working the night shift driving around Waterford county past two nights. It's cold but the lack of wind makes it very bearable. Lack of rain are making the roads alright too. Lowest temp I've seen is -1.5 up the hills but generally its sticking to 0c in the main county. Tonight might be a bit different.

Nice pics of the snow around Dublin. ECM looking to prolong this cold spell and there is a good chance of snow next week. Very cold across Carlow today with thick fog and temps never really getting above -2C during daylight hours. The ground has gone rock hard everywhere. Backroads are lethal in places. Take care if venturing away from salted main routes.

We'd take that 2am Sunday chart all day. 9mm/hr Precip for even half an hour would translate to 5 or 10cm of snow which would stay largely on the ground for almost a week the way things looks to be going.

(Edit: they're the orange stripes for Garaupel, sorry. Misread it as the 9-10mm/hr gradient.. still 3-5mm/hr which would be a nice top up if it fell as snow)

Any chance of the freezing fog clearing away from East coast tomorrow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,026 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Snow/graupel showers approaching the east coast this time tomorrow night on the ICON. As mentioned earlier most of what falls and settles won't be going anywhere anytime soon especially anywhere sheltered.

Down to -1 already now in cork city according to my app, it's probably colder though, paths are all glistening and car started to freeze well over an hour and a half ago

No thaw at all here in Dublin 15. The local wow.met.ie station is reading -1c. Had a fun evening out with the delighted kids who had a big snowball fight. Wore my ice grips from 2010 and didn’t slip at all. Here’s some photos of the gorgeous sunrise over the frozen lake in the park this morning.

So through the day and into the night No thaw at all in mid and north Kildare.

The council have done what I would call a very minimal “sure what harm” job - 1 slight dusting of grit on the motorways.

Nothing whatsoever on the national roads or back roads.

The main roads into north naas are treacherous black ice for example.

    Take care.

Met Éireann warns of 'long cold spell' through next week

    Updated / Friday, 9 Dec 2022 21:11

Senior Forecaster for Met Éireann Gerry Murphy said it looks like the cold weather will last through next week.

"We're really at the start of potentially a long cold spell because really this cold weather is set to last all the way through next week," he said.

Speaking on RTÉ's Six One News, he said this means freezing fog, severe ice and frost as well as very cold days and wintry showers at times will persist.

He said where it does snow, it will accumulate over time.

Most counties remain under weather warnings tonight, with a mixture of scattered sleet and showers as well as icy stretches and freezing fog adding to a day of travel disruption.

Met Éireann expects sharp frost and icy stretches to set in tonight as temperatures dip to -4C in places.

A Status Yellow freezing fog warning applies for all counties in the Republic of Ireland until midday tomorrow, causing potentially hazardous driving conditions.

That is coupled with a Status Yellow warning for ice in the same counties also in place until midday tomorrow.

An additional Status Yellow warning for snow and ice applies specifically to Donegal, with Met Éireann warning that between 9pm tonight and midday tomorrow that "scattered sleet and snow showers will give some accumulations, especially on high ground".

The UK Met Office is responsible for weather warnings in Northern Ireland and has placed Antrim, Down, Tyrone and Derry under a Status Yellow warning for Ice until midday on Sunday.

The warnings are on top of a general winter weather advisory currently in place until Wednesday next week.

That advisory states it will "remain very cold into the middle of next week due to an Arctic airmass, bringing sharp to severe frosts, and ice or black ice on roads and footpaths".

"Some showers of hail, sleet, and snow will occur, mainly in coastal counties. Freezing fog is likely at times, especially this weekend. Winds over land will remain generally light," it added.

    Travel disruption

The freezing weather has seen a total of 143 flights cancelled at Dublin Airport.

A spokesperson from daa, which operates Dublin Airport, said 74 inbound flights and 69 outbound flights have now been cancelled.

Five incoming flights were also cancelled.

A number of flights were delayed as a result of the weather.

A spokesperson for the daa said that the issue is to do with de-icing of planes which is looked after by the airlines themselves.

He said that there will be a knock-on impact felt throughout the day as a result of this.

Passengers are advised to check with their airlines directly for up-to-date information on their specific flights.

Aer Lingus has advised its customers to arrive at Dublin Airport and check in as normal.

It said that any customers whose flight has been cancelled will be contacted by the airline's customer care team.

The weather conditions caused further disruption to public transportation services, with both Dublin Bus and Irish Rail saying that a number of services this morning have been either delayed or cancelled. Delays remain on the Luas red line service.

Bus Éireann said it had to cancel a number of scheduled services and a small number of school transport services in the western region.

The lowest temperature reported at a weather station this morning was at Mount Dillon in Co Roscommon, where -7C was recorded at 8am.

    -5C expected overnight

Met Éireann said a widespread sharp to severe frost has already developed in many areas this evening and some icy stretches are possible on untreated roads as freezing fog becomes more widespread in light westerly or variable breezes.

A scattering of wintry showers are expected mostly near northern and western coasts but one or two may meander further inland at times also.

Lowest overnight temperatures of -5C to -1C, according to Met Éireann.

The forecaster said tomorrow will be generally dry with low winter sunshine, and isolated wintry showers.

Frost, freezing fog and ice will linger in some areas.

However, highest temperatures of only 0C to 4C are expected in light variables breezes.

Drivers are advised to pack essentials (Pic:RollingNews.ie)

    'Let people know your route'

AA Ireland Head of Communications Paddy Comyn advised motorists to slow down to avoid accidents.

He said people should leave a gap to the car in front and make sure their movements are "slow and deliberate".

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Comyn said people can pack some essentials in their car to make the journey safer.

He advised people that they should keep a blanket in their cars, saying that it is "great obviously if you do have a breakdown provider" as well as keeping the mobile phone charged, keeping a shovel in the car if in hilly areas and to "let people know your route as well".

Met Eireanns radar has dropped the idea of any snow in Dublin/East Coast tomorrow night, none of the showers making it onshore.

    Hopefully that changes again!

-3.1 reading here. Turned on the light outside earlier and I could see the ice crystals floating in the air. Very crunchy underfoot.

More like 6°/7° in Dublin .... Where are you going with 13°??

Dublin can get quite a bit of snow especially with east or northeast winds.... colder than many other places on the continent at times......

South of France or Northern Spain???

Looks like I'll have had a full midnight to midnight day of temps below zero (east Co. Galway)

Temp currently -4.6c, but not really falling at any great rate as it has remained more or less stagnant throughout the evening.

The freezing fog is only getting denser as the evening goes on here in Galway, didn't clear at all today albeit there was a significant thaw, however no evaporation either of the meltwater so that's all refroze making everything lethal.

Wouldn't know the exact temperature here, however NUIG have a weather station located at the engineering building I believe, which updates online here: https://weather.nuigalway.ie . It currently reads -0.5°c. However I feel that station has a tendency to read temperatures a tad high.

    Greetings from Sweden

fantastic to see all the winter landscape photos in Ireland

we had an extremely mild autumn here in the north of Gotaland which abruptly changed a few weeks back and it's been well below freezing ever since

all the lakes in the region are frozen solid and we have about 12cm of snow on the ground-daytime temps currently around minus 5 with nights down to around minus 10

the long term forecast is for the cold to continue

hopefully the rest of Ireland will get to see the snow at some stage this winter

save the trouble and jazz it up

The precip charts for tomorrow night look decent for the dubs, but at the same time so confusing, Icon starting the showers at 10PM, while APREGE starts them at 2AM, and 12AM on HAROIME, very confusing what'll happen tomorrow night but if I am correct, it's the same setup with NW winds on lower levels and NE winds over the sea

More runs needed to figure it out I guess...

    Absolutely incredible shots !!

well, hopefully all are correct ;) it does look decent… and I’m much more confident with snow already on the ground.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭waterwelly

    There's a -1 maybe 10 miles from that so I'm not sure it's correct.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,026 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

It will be a mix of grauple and snow, and some drizzle most likely. AROME high res sees some fairly heavy bursts potentially. A messy mix.

On the temperatures, not as cold here as last night, just above freezing, as pockets of ever so slightly milder air move through at times. No thaw evident though.

Sky clearing here now so will probably help a fall back in temperature.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,238 ✭✭✭Oneiric 3

Beautiful photos there Mooro, as are the others by other posters.

As I said earlier, this sort of all day dry white frost is just utterly splendid and just on another level altogether to snow, which often ends up just a mess after a time, and the fog just adds an extra layer of that atmospheric, seasonal look. One of the best days in recent Irish weather history in my humble opinion.

At least you had a thaw, not much of one out in Athenry. Although Leo was here for a while so there a little hot air around.
