Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Bought a traileroad of candles last September from Dealz, unused. Highly disappointed...

Thus people differ. I find it a great cold spell. Clear, dry air and invigorating weather - and doubly great because there was no snow for us. Here's hoping it stays away.

  • Registered Users Posts: 266 ✭✭ascophyllum

Moderate rain in West Mayo overnight, not sure of the temp but no frost and everything appears to have thawed. I thought some of the precipitation would be wintery last night but the snow line on the mountains appears to have moved higher to 500m+.

Met.ie are predicting that the temp will drop after 9am.

A lot of schools made the decision to close this morning - difficult decision but yesterday was like an ice rink on many of the rural roads and the council don't treat any roads back here. The forecast was for some rain and even harder freezing last night so loading buses with children in the dark this morning did not seem like a good idea.

Last big cold we saw -10 on the car and one cars batteries froze not thawing till midday.

At the moment lowest I've seen is -1.5 in the car. Obviously much colder in other parts of Ireland.

-3 at Roches Point. Not often you see temps so low there right by the coast. Dense fog here in East Cork, this morning is as cold as I can remember here, we usually avoid temperature extremes.

sarsfield bridge limerick city it says ~4 but feels like -6.

It's not doom talk to report on the well known issues with power in Ireland.

Any older people on the forum will remember power cuts being common, and always had backup candles in a press somewhere. Was no big deal.

Cold and foggy this morning. Ive had enough of this now. Burning oil and solid fuel to keep warm. Electric metre spinning like a top. Some hefty bills on their way that's for sure.

I suppose you have to laugh. Only 5 months ago it took me 1 minute to get ready on a morning. T shirt and shorts.

Now it takes about 15 minutes with all the layering. I've gone all trendy nowadays. Long John's no longer, baselayer it is. 😁

I think Met Eireann have been exceptionally balanced in relation to this cold snap.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Some of us still do.. Always candles ready to light..

Yes I agree. When was the last time we saw so many bluebird blue sky days in December? My step counter is on overdrive! Today will be trickier due to the slippy roads.

-2.5 here in Sth Kilkenny at 7.30 this morning - Fairly thick fog, no frost. Very still morning still, no wind at all.So the fog will be around for the day id say.

All the scaremongering is ridiculous as it is funny .... Youd swear some of those 'reporters' got their reports off some people in this thread !!!!

The fog is the worst part of this, it may mean slightly warmer temperatures at night but it has barely lifted during the day for several days where I am. -2 and foggy at night then similar during the day. No sun to heat the house. Depressing stuff. I'd rather have -7 at night followed by a cold sunny day than this.

Lowest temp at Met station is -8.9c in Limerick

Still -5C in Cork at 9am. As for what later today and tomorrow might hold, the below is for this evening, looks like this might be sleet for Cork:

Hopefully tomorrow will bring some more widespread snow although amounts do look small:

i really hope it is milder.. i dont mind the cold weather but a lot of people will be on the move next weekend and it would be nice to not have the worry of dangerous road conditions.. it can freeze/snow all it wants for christmas.

10° degrees on Sun, strong SE winds on Mon &Tue with rain 🌧. Back to normal routine.

Charts look more sleety now all right for the SW, S and not pushing as far inland, a fairly weak affair.

I feel so sorry for the birds. They have short lifespans so wouldn't remember 2010 or listen to Met Eireann. It must seem like end of days to them when everything freezes!

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Deep cold now in the ground here in Cork. Whatever falls here tonight/tomorrow is likely to freeze on contact. So if it doesn't snow your talking freezing rain and very dangerous set up. That's of course IF the ppn does reach Cork which is uncertain

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,700 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Roads surprisingly quiet this morning. A lot of people must have decided to stay put.

It's strange how -3 can feel warmer than +6 or +7 with a breeze.

Anyway from next weekend we'll be back to t-shirt weather!! Wouldn't be shocked to see us hitting +13 or +14 before the year is out.

No frost in this part of cork city last night, ballinlough/Douglas area. Felt every bit as cold as the previous few nights just no frost.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭waterwelly

I want to see cars driving across lakes like 2010. Then it's severe cold.

How does the water get around your system. Its called a pump. What generates the power to that pump. Go on have a guess? Then put a smiley face on the end of your answer.

The fog in cork city has... turned into mist droplet size bits of snow!

EDIT: And stopped, gave the cars and grass a bit of white covering though. Bitterly cold out

What are the well known power issues in Ireland?

I remember blackouts due to esb strikes but when were power cuts common due to supply issues?

And as you have said yourself, rolling blackout here would be no big deal once people are prewarned yet the media and opposition TD's are jumping all over it.

Sorry, I know not Ireland but I'm giddy at the snow over here and would've been a lurker in the snow threads over the years when we were still in Ireland, always hoping for some of that white gold in winter in Greystones where we used to live. The above two photos were taken a day apart on Friday and Saturday just gone where we are in the countryside. It's -6 degrees here today and two weeks ago we had 16 degrees one of the days. White winters are the best!

Freezing fog and bitter here in Galway City this morning, everything still frozen solid, including it appears our central heating. Won't fire up this morning. Very irritating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭waterwelly

A 100w pump won't send your esb meter spinning. And if its on the lowest setting it be more like 50w.

If we end up with an alternating pattern between south westerlies and north westerlies, temperatues will probably not get up that high, the milder weather won't last too long in that scenario too. We would also see some brief cold spells in such a setup ,with perhaps snow at night in places

That's not good. Your pipes should be deep enough and insulated enough to withstand this level of cold even though every cold night pushes the freezing level deeper.

When it does thaw, keep the heating running in small bursts every couple of hours to keep pipes from freezing on the very cold nights.

Still -5C in Athenry at 10am.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Like I think even the most ardent of Cold Snappers on here will agree that the above is alarmist at best and downright idiotic and incorrect at worst. Nation set to freeze? Nah lads that's not happening in most places.

250k to work from home? I'd say a lot more than that are permanently working from home.

Snow Ice and freezing fog? Maybe a little but nothing which is a danger to motorists.

22 flights in and out of Dublin Cancelled? Nothing to do with the weather in Ireland lads.

if your circulating pump is driving your energy costs you might want to replace it.. they consume very little electricity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,310 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

They generally are very balanced. It’s only ever some gutter press losing the run of themselves and then the inevitable backlash to that. Then some politician chimes in and the cycle repeats

Met Eireann themselves are nearly always pretty sensible

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,700 ✭✭✭Gusser09

It's more than likely not a piping issue. I'd imagine it's an outdoor boiler.

Get the hairdryer at it for about ten minutes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭waterwelly

    What station was that?

RTE are saying -7.2 Athenry last night.

Moderate rain now in West Mayo and temps appear to be up quite a bit, feels like 5° or so, Met were forecasting 0 for now, the problem now is tomorrow could be properly frozen and loads of water on the roads to freeze, but the schools will feel they're being too cautious as today was quite a bit warmer than forecast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,627 ✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

A water pump would not make your electricity meter show excessive use.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,265 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

Most of the power shedding in the 70s & 80s was related to fuel issues and not strikes. The popular imagination always refers to strikes but a couple of oil crisis were the real causes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭waterwelly

And in milder weather when we still have the heating on, but turned down low, the pump runs at the same level of power consumption.
