Top three gigs you went to. Keep it to 3 no need to go beyond that.

In no particular order as they were all my favourite gig for different reasons.

    Lankum - Vicar St.

    Mountain Goats - Vicar St.

    Sparks - Vicar St.

Shout out to Foggynotions as ever for consistently putting on the best shows every year.

This is going to be tough....... In no particular order.

    Alanis Morisette - 3 Arena

I was 9 when jagged little pill came out, and even then I knew it was special, so while this was a by the numbers gig for Alanis, it was a special one for me.

    Frank Turner - Berlin

I've seen Turner 57 times now, and if you've seen him you know the drill, Audience and artist combine as one, the more the audience gives, the more he gives. Nothing captures this like his own 4 day festival Lost Evenings, and night 3 of this year's was him playing his new album in full, which could have gone very wrong, but everyone in the crowd and on stage left every bit of themselves in that venue. Top 5 Turner gig for me.

The cherry cokes - somewhere at sea

The Flogging Molly salty dog cruise is a 4 day punk rock bender on a cruise ship, open bar from Miami to the Bahamas and back again. The last band on it this year was a band called the Cherry Cokes. And despite it being 1am and them being on a stage way too small to accommodate the crowd, insanity broke out for an hour.

The cherry cokes are a celt punk band in the vein of DKM, Flogging Molly or the pogues, except all in Japanese, finishing their set with a half English/half Japanese version of the Irish rover.

You know it's a good year for gigs when you wait 25 years for Garth Brooks and he doesn't even crack your top 5 that week......

OP do you not mean 2022 or is it for gigs that haven't happened yet.

The great Alter Bridge gig in the 3Arena last Thursday ends my gigs for the year. No doubt made up for the last few years with the covid restrictions. Sadly Covid got in the way for the Hella Mega Tour for me aswell as Lindsey Buckinghams illness with the postphonement and cancellations but thats life

From Whelans, Vicar Street ,RHK, 3Arena, Malahide Castle, Pairc Ui Chaoimh and Croke Park all great occasions

So hard to pick out the best gig but I'll mention a few

Garth Brooks 9th Sep Croke Park- was a bit of an emotional one esp after the 2014 debacle but that was all vanished the minute he hit the stage. The atmosphere was electric and the performance was brilliant. Been night 1 the setlist was mostly a surprise but with the gig been part of a tour it didn't change much from the US leg.

Tool 6th May 3Arena- Outstanding gig, the visuals were amazing and with no phones allowed til the last song everyone was 100% focused

The Cure 1st Dec 3Arena- setlist amazing as was the performance. Brilliant atmosphere too

The Killers 15th Jun Malahide Castle- Bought a ticket on the whim and really enjoyed it. Weather was great and venue wasn't too manic crowdwise.

Elton John 1st July Pairc Ui Chaoimh- was a prevlidge to see such a legend live. Had a ticket originally for the 3Arena shows which were postponed over the years due to Covid and Eltons injury but glad I got a refund and went to this show instead. The stage itself was amazing and Elton was in fine form. Even though its pricy I would recommend going to see him on any of the remaining dates on the tour. Sadly too much out of my budget.

Rod Stewart 18th Nov 3Arena-another gig bought on a whim and enjoyedable night. These acts are timeless and really great too see

WWE Clash At The Castle Cardiff 3rd Sep- event itself was mediocre but it was a brilliant weekend. City was buzzing with Wrestling fans aswell as plenty of parties/conventions and other Wrestling related events

Ed Sheeran 20th Apr Vicar Street- Wasn't planning on going to see any of the Stadium shows and really lucky too of been on Ticketmaster at the right time and picked up a ticket to this 'extra show' (jumped on the bandwagon but im not the only one in Ireland too do it tbh). Good atmosphere and he sounded great. I'm doubtful I'll see such a 'big artist' in an intimate setting again

All in all great year, all full value for money (few hiccups with seating at Garth Brooks etc).

    Roll on 2023

The Gilla Band - ATN - Friday Incendiary Noise Rock influenced by the sound of mid 80s Sonic Youth.

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard - ATN Sunday. The Australian psych rock surf band's Irish debut.

Third place Pixies GIAF/EP and Fontaines DC EP in a joint position.

Strange one was Emma Ruth Rundle (St. Ann's Church) who started off absolutely stunning the place in to pin drop silence but then had a bit of a breakdown and it just felt wrong by the end. Her issues are well documented.

@Ultimate Gowlbag - I was pleasantly surprised by Perturbator - popped along with my brother who also had high praise for Devin Townsend.

Not hard, showing my age and only went to 3 gigs in 2022

Idles - Lisbon (Coliseu de Lisboa) back in March, excellent venue for sound, terrible for drinks. Great gig right up until they started d!cking around with Mariah Carey songs. Caught my first dose of COVID over there, still an good weekend.

Brian Fallon - Shepherds Bush in May. He's put on a bit of COVID weight. Good gig.

Gaslight Anthem - Manchester in August. Smashing gig but they left out a few songs I would have expected on a reunion tour. Great night out after too. I had to drive up from Essex and back because of the train strikes, worth it!

    Anthrax - O2 Academy, Birmingham

Don't worry about it, i already was that guy further upthread! I too was there!

Seeing as honourable mentions are allowed i'll put forward:

Low-Vicar St., Minami Deutsch-Whelans, Godflesh-Opium Rooms, Thumper and Gilla Band-multiple occasions this year. Plus Electric Moon, Part Chimp, Hey Colossus and Dead Sea Apes all at Heavy Psych Fest in Liverpool.

Most disappointing was Spiritualized in the Olympia. One of my all time faves on the back of their best album in 25 years (imo), playing a venue i'd always wanted to see them in and it was flat as a pancake. I was gutted afterwards.

Say only went to 3 gigs but had great time at all

    1. Pearl Jam - London night 1

Setlist with In Hiding, Low Light, Light Years after opening with Better Man was never going to be only good. Unreal weather, good catchup with mates and some great songs. Pixies supporting were great too.

    2. Tool - Dublin

1st time seeing them and it was pretty much what I expected from a Tool gig. So damn good

    3. The Darkness - Cork

It is never a bad gig with these, great stuff as always.

That was one of my favourite years for gigs after the pent up demand of the covid years. Hard to narrow it down but would go for these

    1. St Vincent - Mad cool and fairview park. What a show she put on, really tight band and totally different each tour

    2. Pavement - Primavera and vicar street. Primavera show was unreal, like a best of tune after tune

    3. Damon albarn - nch. 1st night was fine but 2nd was phenomenal. Really great album and on song, beautiful rendition of out of time to close out, all the more poignant with Ukraine situation starting

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 11,395 Mod ✭✭✭✭lordgoat

Albarn in the NCH was the only gig I'm annoyed about missing, well the haunted dancehall thing as well would have been interesting.

Low - Vicar St. Last chance to see them as it turned out, glad I took the opportunity

Caribou - Vicar St. First gig of the year on Feb 1st. A week after restrictions lifted.

Fat freddys drop - Vicar St. Always a great show when they roll into town

A few other good ones, just to show I went to venues other than Vicar st: Roisin Murphy Olympia, Kevin Morby Academy and Blindboy Jerron Paxton on a boat in Cork

couldn't in all good consciousness pick three so I'm going with..... Big Thief, War on Drugs, Low, Public Service Broadcasting, Mitski (Vicar St), Sharon Van Etten, Spiritualized, Protomartyr, Nick Cave (ATN), Arcade Fire, Sigur Ros and the Cure.

If I had to pick one it would be Cave at ATN. Some band, Some setlist. Some performance by the man himself!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,989 ✭✭✭flasher0030

Did you think Spiritualized was good. I thought it was a bit draggy. No effort by the lead singer Jason Pierce. Loved War on drugs, sigur ros, arcade fire and the Cure.

    2.Green Day - June - Marley Park

    3.Heaton and Abbott - June - St Anne's Park

The inclusion of honourable mentions skews the stats a bit, but I think this is how things stand.

Arcade Fire (8) - they may not be all the same night, but I'm grouping them together

Fontaines D.C. (5) - venue not always specified, but seems to be 5 votes overall

Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets (5)

    Pavement (5)

    Public Service Broadcasting (5)

St. Vincent (5 in total - 4 for Fairview Park)

Amyl and the Sniffers (4 in total)

Nick Cave (4 in total - 3 for ATN, 1 for Primavera)

    The Cure, Low, Tool (4)

3 votes apiece for Caribou, Róisín Murphy, Sigur Rós, Sparks, Sharon Van Etten.

2025 Gigs and Events: Stuart Murdoch, Lyle Lovett, Camera Obscura, The Corrs/Imelda May/Natalie Imbruglia, Olivia Rodrigo, Iron Maiden, Neil Young/Van Morrison, Dua Lipa, Lana Del Rey, Weezer, The Doobie Brothers, Billie Eilish (x2), Oasis, Sharon Van Etten, The Human League, Deacon Blue, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings (x2), Nerina Pallot

😂 What do you mean by effort? I take it you've never seen Spiritualized before? Jason Pierce has never engaged with the audience going right back to his Spacemen 3 days, if that's what you're on about. I'll agree it wasn't a great gig though, and i say that as an uber fan.
