Zappi charger

if you get a zappi charger and 2 years from now you retrofit your house with ext insulation and solar panels is it easy to remove the zappi from the side of your house to insulate and add the zappi to the solar panels etc. preferably I would have liked to get the work done first and then get the zappi but may have to get it first….

sure, leave extra power cable length in the housing of the Zappi now (there's ample space) and also run at least two CAT5/6 cables from the Zappi install point back to your consumer unit (same comment re extra length of cable)

Sorry just to clarify does the external insulation go around the zappi and it doesn’t need to be taken off the wall when the insualtion is being applied? I read somewhere that you can’t apply the zappi to ext insulation so probably better to install before insulated - is that correct ? Thanks

yes it will need to be removed along with the isolator switch.

EWI goes on and they can put some grounds in behind or just use long fixings to fix back to the structure.

Can I ask you a quick question.....I had a partial rewire 10 years ago..a new fuse box and some sockets replaced etc However the house could probably do with a full rewire in the next few years. Can I still get an ev charger like a zappi with mediocore wiring or does it matter?

Not an electrician here so take what I say with pinch of salt. The Zappi will need its own wiring from the fuseboard to the charger anyway so the rest of the house wiring shouldn't really matter anyway I would think. If you have new fusebox so long as there is space it will just need its own circuit breaker. The tails may need to be upgraded, that is the wires from meter to fusebox, they may have been upgraded as part of previous upgrade anyway.

I had partial rewire, new fuse box and new sockets about 11 years ago.

I have now just had a Zappi installed.

The tails from the meter to the fuse box were deemed to be inadequate.

The company that fitted the Zappi also installed heavier tails which necessitated a re-test/re-certification of the wiring in the house. That had to be paid for in addition to the Zappi install.

The upgrade to the tails triggered a need for ESB Networks to have to call to the house and be paid €186.

kinda depends on how long the wire run is and awkwardness of it.. and if a new earth rod is required.. you might also need earthing done to hotpress and sink if not done already.. i paid 1k for the tails upgrade and new earth rod in the summer.. wire run was probably 4 meters..

I see thanks….my meter box though is in the driveway …does that make any diff…can the ev charger be connected to the meter box instead of the fuse box….sorry I’m not very electrically minded !!

Yes, I wanted mine connected to the outside meter box rather than running cables through the house. It is possible, so i'd definitely bring it up with the installer in advance of them arriving. They'll prob ask for pics\video showing the distance from the fuseboard to where you want the charger installed...if its over a certain distance, they will do it

It basically says only allowed in exceptional circumstances where it is not feasible to to connection to the distribution board, it may well come down to the opinion of the individual electrician.

Whilst its good to ask questions and have a good idea before you get sparks no one here can answer the finer details thats up to the electrician on the day.

In my case I had asked the same but electrician said not possible, what he did was used the old tails to pull new tails and charger wiring from meter to distribution board. Then the new charger cable from distribution board he was able to get to in the cavity of the wall behind the meter and fish it out foot or so away from the meter so it follows same path as the tails but doesn't go into meter box itself. May be possible to do similar on yours but again its very much down to the electrician on the day and what they can actually see in place to then decide what is best option.
