Aldi "Silverside Ham" - oven only cooking

So I have a Silverside Ham - for oven cooking as per pic.

Just wondering -

why does this ham not need the boiling in advance
Why do the instructions state "do not reheat" ????
Is "ham" already cooked (I read this somewhere) and you are just re-heating.

Given above questions, you can wish me well in cooking dinner today!

Too late for you now, but it's not clear whether that ham is cooked or not.

A ham joint usually would come uncooked and ham can be roast or boiled or a combination of both.

You should be able to tell by the ham whether it is cooked or not - it should be pretty obvious.

It's possible that is merely reheating a cooked joint. I don't know without seeing it.

I know M&S do cooked turkey joints that you heat in the oven. Perhaps this is something similar?

Perhaps. But that cooked turkey joint I mentioned recommends 20 minutes per 500g to serve. That could be argued as cooking, too, but it isn't.

As I said, I don't know but your assertion does not change that.

Looking at Aldi UK, they definitely sell cooked ham joints that have heating instructions similar to the OP's. (can't find much info on Ireland) They also sell uncooked joints, too of course, but under a different department.

Perhaps the op will tell us for sure and if you are right you can crow about it.

What I am suggesting, certainly does exist but I make no definitive claim about the OP's joint as I just don't know.

It's interesting how annoyed people are appearing to be getting on this, complete with personal insults.

What would I know about cooking and reheating, anyway 🤔

Personally, if I had made absolute ascertions about this and I was wrong, I'd be rather embarrassed.

So this is what was confusing me - I am pretty sure it wasn't cooked, as it was slimy and not cooked looking out of the package - but I had read (see e.g. from Jamie Oliver below) that "hams" come pre-cooked. Again, looking at it, it didn't have the texture of cooked ham at all, so I'm pretty sure not, though I have seen cooked meats as per 'the beer revolu's post now that he mentions it.

It went well! The ham was absolutely gorgeous after 90 mins and a bit of basting during the cooking. Turkey crown was nice too and easier to do in circa. 110 minutes than a full turkey.

So, anyway, thanks for the responses, and please, conflicting opinions and possibilities are good for debate! There was no mention of "cooked" or "uncooked" on the packaging.

Regardless, I'm still very confused about ""do not reheat" - but plan to ignore that obviously today!

It's been cooked and then vacuum sealed. You're reheating it for 90 minutes for the main meal. That's why it says you can eat it cold, and not to reheat.

Mark, can you clarify which piece you are talking about - mine (OP) does not state cooked, but does state 90 minutes. The cooked meat posted states cooked, but does not state 90 minutes.

I'm inclined to think that the OP's one was not in fact cooked as the instructions say to "cook" for 90 minutes whereas the UK aldi one I posted says to "heat" for 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Either way, both types exist.

90 mins at 170 would probably be needed to heat a pre-cooked ham to an acceptable temperature.

For years, the turkey leftovers and ham leftovers have been left (uncut remains) in our oven, not even fridge, and we have eaten them as is or slightly heated in the micro.

It's not something I'd ever do with any other food but have never gotten sick from it.

I try not to think about it truth be told.

Of course it would, or something close to it. I've posted instructions from Aldi UK for reheating a cooked ham and they suggest 80 minutes at 170 but it would obviously depend on the size.

What a certain charming person fails to understand is that to bring a large piece of meat up to temperature will take more or less as long as it takes to cook it.

On the OPs first question, ham's don't need to be boiled and can just go straight into the oven (and are, IMO, far better this way).

I think the boiling comes from how hams used to be sold, incredibly salty and a need to skim the impurities. I think you even had to pre-soak them back in the day.

I don't believe it's the case any more.

Indeed, hams are a lot less salty then they were. I never soak a ham if boiling it but I would consider soaking it if I was going to roast it.

But, even 20 years ago, bacon/ham really did require soaking to not be really salty.

My wife normally boils a ham before roasting. There are still plenty of very salty hams being sold. The texture of the ham is much better in most cases when boiled then roasted.

Usually, the roasting part is just for the glaze effect, as far as I am concerned.

But like many things, there are many ways of doing it and people have their preferences.

I've just boiled ham, I usually boil and then fairly briefly roast/glaze and I've also roast from the start. They are all good. It's hard enough to fcuk up 😁
