Bora only 1% behind, seemingly ‘car enthusiasts’ aren’t that into having their cars roadworthy. Who’d have thought!

It's why I sweat when I'm told a car I'm looking at buying was previously owned by a mechanic.

Is200s are bought to be wreaked so it's not surprising

Statistics, statistics, statistics. Meaningless. Vauxhall Vectra has a high fail rate for instance. But how many of those, at least 12 year old imports, were tested?

Failures for blubs or tyres aren't exactly indicative of overall brand reliability.

One stat that I'd love to see in the next year or two, is how many Tesla Model 3's fail for headlight alignment.

And it's not even their rubbish auto high-beam asssit, I'm constantly blinded by their crappy dipped beam spread.

Owners of IS200s, boras and whatever sh1theap boo machines would be "car enthusiasts" in the same way England fans at international football tournaments are "sports enthusiasts".

Data's sounds incomplete to make any meaningful conclusions.

The RSA stressed that the results do not provide any information on factors such as the mileage, maintenance and service history of vehicles.

    Sounds a bit pointless.

A spokesperson for the RSA said it was very difficult to draw any conclusions or trends from the figures as research had identified that around a third of all motorists consistently use the NCT as “a diagnostic tool”. “They get a list of failure items from the NCT and then go off to their mechanic to get them fixed,” the spokesperson observed.

That points to the unpredictability and inconsistency of the test, the lack of comparable equipment in garages and mechanics, the level of lack of depth most services go.

"Lexus had the lowest failure rate at 38.4pc, although the average age of its vehicles tested was the same as those with higher failure levels."

So they win the most reliable and most unreliable score... The IS200 is one of tye top boy racer cars around aot with the most stupid mods but each to their own

1089 according to the Excel sheet the RSA provided, which is a lot more than I expected. Actually looks like there's roughly the same amount of Vauxhalls as Opels in that age band!

There are some great stats in the actually file on RSA.ie. Surprised to see so many of some cars left, 1000’s of Almeras unfortunately.

Not one Ford Granada or Scorpio left with an NCT. Few Peugeot 1007s in the list. Never seen one here. They are quite a quirky car that I wouldn’t mind having.

I think a lot of the 80s and even til mid 90s cars being tested get recorded as Other, e.g. look at the huge amount of BMW Other.

A spokes man fir the RSA says

“Our advice has always been that the NCT should not be used as a substitute for a full service as NCT testers can’t check a vehicle to the same level as a mechanic.😱

    What the hell.

There are a load of make and model unspecified entries too. For fairly recent cars too.

I’d love to clean up the data in there. Especially as older cars age out of the system, all they will be left on will be the tax database. At least as they are rolling through a NCT centre you can capture them on camera and update the file.

They can't 🤷 NCT testers have to test only the items listed and can't remove anything such as plastic covers to get a better look

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,327 ✭✭✭MightyMunster

That would be zero as none of them have been NCTd yet.

There's a max 5 second auto calibration option on them too.

Auto high beam works well, did you drive one recently?

There's an "other" category in many of the marques. But also the Granada and Scorpio (apart from the Mk2 1990s version of the latter) only need NCT every two years, as between 30 and 39 years old?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 892 ✭✭✭mazdamiatamx5

Yeah, I'd be intrigued to look at the rare stuff, eg how many Porsche 928s there are out there, but it seems they use the other category for most rare small volume models.

Impressive from the rest of the range and their owners for Lexus to be top marque with the Is200 bringing them down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,129 ✭✭✭kirving

Which is why I said "in the next year or two".

I have yep, and passed countless Model 3's in the past week driving through California, and I don't see the same thing here on the US models.

Anyway, I'm not referring to their high beam assist (which owners have been complaining about too), it's the dipped beam spread on the Model 3 that can be blinding.

As I said there's a self calibration function available for the owner, takes 10 seconds.

Apparently the issue can be caused by downloading an update when car is parked on a slope which resets the light height.

this is just common sense. performing a service is not the same as checking a preset list, and taking no action if issues are found.

does an NCT mechanic check for excess timing chain wear, for example?
