The UK equivalent "Premium Bonds" have steadily increased their rate from 1% to 3% over the last six months: https://www.nsandi.com/historical-interest-rates

NTMA taking Irish PB holders for granted it seems with their paltry 0.35% rate unmoved since the last reduction last year.

Nothing for me today. The €50K winner was bought in 2008.

"This week’s Prize Bond Star Prize of €50,000 goes to lucky Prize Bond number JA 015174 held in County Laois. The lucky bond was

    purchased in 2008. "

Same here. Decided to start cashing in on January 1st and buy some new bonds and significantly reduce my holding.

    Been my worst year ever.

I purchased €10,000 Prize Bonds December 2020 and have won absolutely nothing to date. My sister and I have maybe €400 worth of bonds which we got from our father, some going back to 1980’s I think. We won €75 over 10 years ago but nothing since.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,021 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

I have a bunch worth €10K which has not won since June 2018. Presently €10K with average luck would win €50 once every two years.

Glory hallelujah, €50 today. Filled out partial encashment form yesterday ready for posting on December 31st.

Will still reduce my exposure. Might reconsider going back in when they increase the number of prizes but no sign of that happening anytime soon.

Happy Christmas everybody and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2023.

We're a pair carrickbawn - €50 here today too! I have reduced my holding over the year too.

Happy and healthy Christmas and New Year to all.

We won €50 worth of prizebonds! I just assumed it would be cash!

Are things getting that tight financially?

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,021 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Nothing for me today. Assuming the same next week, a mini annual report. I had a winner or winners in every month except January, actually no win until the 25 February draw. Roughly a return of 0.33% for the year.

A happy Christmas to all, and just to show what we could aspire to. 12 x €50 in 5 months, where 4 would be expected. Fermanagh bonds.

No. Cash (cheque) prizes ended a couple of years ago. The choices now are (1) supply them with bank account details and prize winnings are transferred to your account or (2) new prize bonds are issued to the value of your winnings. If you don’t supply bank details then new prize bonds are issued.

Bonds issued as prize winning reinvestment are exempt from the three month holding rule, so if you want the cash you can return these immediately.

So at end of the year more or less and feels like a poor year for me although in reality probably more of less what is expected.

    Total bonds : €104K

    Prizes : 4 x €50 (Apr, June, Sept, Oct)

Hope everyone has a nice Christmas and hopefully there might be a bit of an increase in prizes next year!

I was wondering that myself. The interest rate used to calculate the prize fund was reduced from 0.5% to 0.35% in January 2021.

There have been several increases in the ECB rate in recent months, but the prize fund is unchanged at 0.35%. Must be overdue a change.

  • Registered Users Posts: 517 ✭✭✭Atlantis50

The rationale for cuts has always been some variation of "The new rates reflect the reductions in interest rates in the savings market and in Sovereign bond yields generally."

So there's two factors they say they consider when setting the rate:

    1. Savings market interest rates: AIB & Permanent TSB recently increased their fixed term deposit rates slightly but Raisin bank is offering up to 2.90% for 1yr fixed deposit: https://www.askaboutmoney.com/threads/term-deposits-fixed-lump-sum-savings.101813/
    2. Sovereign bond yields: At the time of the reduction to 0.35% in January 2021, the 10yr bond yield for Ireland was 0.30%, so pretty close to the PB rate. However, almost exactly 1 year later the rate exceeded 1% and did not fall below it, in fact it has been over 2% for almost 3 months now, presently just short of 3%: https://tradingeconomics.com/ireland/government-bond-yield

So on both fronts, State Savings/NTMA are failing to keep pace with bank deposit rates and sovereign bond yields. I had thought a few months ago that they would have gone back up to 0.5% by now, but considering the above, a more substantial increase is now due.

New Finance Minister Michael McGrath who is in charge of the NTMA has previously complained about cuts in state savings rates when he was in opposition: https://www.fiannafail.ie/news/savers-short-changed-as-prize-bond-pay-out-slashed-ff

He can be contacted at michael.mcgrath@oireachtas.ie should anyone wish to express their views on the current rates (I will be).
