This time last year they had Mrs browns boys (🤮) on repeat, nearly every evening.

This year its Killnascully most evenings.

Do they have anything better to show? The licence fee is daylight robbery.

There is a musical about a show with toys, they could air that.

    Father Ted never gets old.

I would love to see old episodes of The late late show with Gaybo.

Might be time for the big wigs in Boards HQ to create a forum for middle-aged men to give out about RTÉ.

RTE seem to block most things on my new TV due to being from Ulster. I couldn't watch any of the films on it over Christmas for example when they had the 2 Home Alone films on back to back. It is strange as Gladiator is on now and isn't blocked. Tonight for the first time RTE news was blocked, I think this was because it was on after Killinaskully and the block never went off.

Last year we couldn't watch the Tyrone Kerry extra time as the block came on as soccer was scheduled to be on. I don't understand how any northerners can support the Republic of Ireland soccer team when RTE don't even let them watch the games. I certainly don't support them and I am glad when they lose. I don't support Northern Ireland either obviously. What has become of this island truly is a mess, as a Catholic born in Ulster I feel like such an outsider in the British isles. The only people we can trust is our own community.

@BaywatchHQ Rte isn't the entire ROI, nor does it represent us anymore (it never did, only a West Brit elite within us)

Relax, we're more similar than we are different.

Killinaskully…oh god. The Christmas special with all the leaves on the trees. Pure dung.

@glitterIsland ...none of this is news.

Might be time for the big wigs in RTE to give you a job defending it, its dreadful output, and ridiculously overpaid "talent". You might as well get paid for doing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 922 ✭✭✭Emblematic

We all like something to complain about and RTE gives us that. Well worth the license fee. The problem is that a lot of people are currently evading the fee through not having a TV.

  • Surely a series on the life and times of Bosco is long overdue?

Mrs Brown's Boys is woeful drivel ... and yes it is on a lot this year as well ... don't mind Killinaskully at all ... but that Mrs Brown stuff ... All Round to Mrs Brown's is another one .... is the most awful and most unprofessional drivel ...

Mrs Brown is so 10 years ago ... she belongs then ... those Christmas episodes year in year out are like flogging a dead horse ... nothing new is coming from this show at all ...

More bad news came my way earlier ... turned on the TV and saw an advert for both Dancing with the Stars and Operation Transformation ... 2 more dead horses being flogged ... and these 2 are the epitome of the end of Christmas season being advertised during Christmas season ...

RTE is relying on these and other useless programmes that are well past their sell by date ... I've heard that dancing thing finishes after this season but would not hold my breath ... it will return just renamed like they used to do with Your A Star becoming Ireland's Got Talent and so forth ... betcha you'll get Strictly Dancing Ireland next time round !!!

It is time all of these yokes are scrapped ... and something new and different is done instead ... I for one am sick of seeing Mrs Brown, so called stars dancing and mildly overweight people being upset by TV bullies ...

How he could tell his story about the sexual abuse he suffered in the 80's. Kept in a box. Repeatedly fisted and nobody did anything about it. The ba5stards even filmed it. Shocking.

I switched on our bog channels and they had the chase uk on one of them and the chase Australia on an other at the same time.

They play that shite all year round. The Christmas programming was complete shite.

But The Chase isn't on RTE.

    It's on Virgin Media.

Well all the whole free to air through your tv licence was dire over the Christmas. Not just rte.

It's so annoying to see that ad for dancing with the stars over and over. Never watched it and never will. I thought i read somewhere that it was finishing up, maybe that was something else, I really don't like RTE. Your always certain to get a particular narrative without fail.

I only use my Television now to watch live sport or a movie. I will only generally watch a movie on BBC, no adds. I hate watching news, it is all bad and i mind ends up completely seeing through it. I will keep n eye on the weather.

TG4 is a great station, not bad for a gang a muckers from Connemara, go h'an a mhaith ar fad, Bula Bus etc.

It is what it is. I would not be griping over it. There are lots of funny books to read, oodles of online pornography to watch, extensive volumes of online music to listen to - GO TO YOUR LOCAL FOR 5 PINTS ???? - catch a play, write something, tidy your bedroom, do some work, harass that person who deserves it most in your opinion, ring an old friend you have not heard from in a while, find a quiet space and sit in it contemplating your existence, look at a 20 year old photo album, fantasize erotically about tying an attractive colleague to an inverted sexual apparatus and molesting her extensively until they eventually submit in gratifying ecstasy to your whimsical commands?

MBB just reminds me of Extras at this stage, with Brendan o'carroll a more pathetic Andy Millman. A multimillionaire sure, but probably miserable.

Rte needs the Dancing and OT shows, as they provide so much filler material for other shows. It's all cyclical.

Tubs and Darcys radio shows are filled with 'content' and interviews about OT & DWTS for the next 6 weeks. The Late Late Show will have guests from both shows too.

Most people have even given up complaining about RTÉ which just shows how irrelevant and insignificant the organisation has become- when people stop talking about you, it really is time you need to start listening - the company complains about licence fees and then delivers sh1te programming and wonders why people don’t support them anymore.

With TSTM being able to stay off the books they could run it for 20 years without anyone ever knowing how much it makes or loses.

Mrs Browns Boys is a BBC programme. I don’t know why people are complaining about RTE showing it, it has a huge audience of people watching it (mainly in Dublin, their sense of humour is very similar to the British) and it costs fück all to show.

Do we really need another RTÉ/Late Late Show/Tubridy thread? The radio and television forums are already chocked full of them.

I, personally, am starting to get worried that I’m going to feel guilty when I hear on the news that a person who has attacked a well known “celebrity” had been ranting, and raving, on online message boards daily, fixating on that celeb, before they committed their crime.

It takes a special breed of person who will listen in, or watch, hours of “content” from a provider and presenter they absolutely despise. It just cannot be healthy. My advice to these people would be to move the dial or change the channel. Wallowing in misery is no way live.

You could be right there - only people I've met who like it are Dubs. Trash TV and an embarrassment to the country, if it was funny you could take it as comedy but it's mostly puerile toilet humour.

It’s not for everyone but you can’t deny that there isn’t an audience for it.

I honestly think that a lot of middle class Irish people in their 30s think RTE should somehow have the resources to show only brand new episodes of Futurama, South Park, and Rick and Morty every single night. Along with repeats of Ryan Tubridy and Leo Varadkar on the guillotine. There are huge swathes of the population who deserve to be catered for as well.

Rte as a state broadcaster is utterly disgusting. Zero talent, paid astronomical salary, obviously entwined with a political agenda. And forget all of that. Imagine if rte broadcasters had to start again as YouTube broadcaster with zero backing. They'd get 8 views. Rte has to be killed and lit on fire tonight and replaced with shipping forecast. I can't even believe rte exists and rotten old bitches and whatever get paid to talk about nothing. It's completely outrageous and indefensible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,028 ✭✭✭✭ButtersSuki

That is truly an epic leap to basically suggest that someone on here would physically attack one of the RTE "stars". Well done.

RTE's output, especially at Christmas is truly woeful. Endless cooking programmes, think I spotted 3 of them between 6pm and 9 one evening recently. Like I know its Christmas, but that's just taking the piss. Reality TV drivel on nearly every night, the worst offender being that fittest family thing. And then to cap it off, it's Mrs Brown on a loop over the entire Xmas schedule. I won't even get into that Eamon and Bridget thing........or any number of other vehicles for RTE non entities stealing a living in Donnybrook.

Apart from the news and the very odd Irish interest documentary, I give the state broadcaster a wide berth. I record anything decent on the British channels and watch them minus ads in my own time. BBC4 and Channel4 often have something of interest. After that, Youtube has taken over for most of my viewing needs. I've got Premium, so no ads and you are watching content of actual interest to you, often with sky high production values.

I don't expect RTE to compete with heavyweight international media giants but outside of sport and current affairs, lets not pretend they are providing a balanced, good quality service either. So much of it is lowest common denominator rubbish, they are starting to resemble TV3 in the early days.

    TLDR;

Ryan Tubridy is employed there. Enough said.

I used to defend RTE but I can't anymore. Even their political shows are completely dumbed down now.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,426 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

But that's not unique to RTE.

On BBC "Strictly Come Dancing" used to be a one night a week show.

But it has evolved into the show on Saturday, the results on Sunday, and a five day a week magazine show Monday to Friday.

I'm sure there are radio tie-ins in the UK also.

Same with all the ITV reality rubbish.

Well you send PMs to people trying to intimidate them after they disagree with you over Ryan Tubridy et al, so it certainly wouldn’t surprise me if you “went for” Mr Tubridy if you saw him in the wild.

A public service broadcaster is obliged to create programming for everyone - not just middle-aged dudes who think paying 12.99 for some video game service is great value, but the equivalent amount to fund current affairs, sport, orchestras, radio, archives, independent production is a waste of money.

There will always be shows that one thinks is rubbish - Mrs Browns Boys is dreadful but working class people from Dublin seem to love it. Callan’s Kicks is about as funny as finding a lump on your testicle but obviously people watch and listen to it (assuming people who don’t actually understand satire or humour in general).

RTE1 in particular has just seemed to have given up trying. The same programme's repeated endlessly. I watch the six one occasionally. They can't even provide a full news bulletin during the summer and Christmas, presumably because they have to do holidays. Radio 1 shuts down completely and just plays music, embarrassing.
