The bookies have slashed the odds on Glasgow now making it a firm favourite.

I have a range of weekends with free cancelleation booked

San Marino are going to have four semi finals!

Don't think anything will come of this, still it would be great if RTE took a risk, instead of bland middle of the road songs that always finish near the bottom every year

Does anybody know if it will be UK presenters or will Ukrainian presenters be hosting or maybe a mix?

    Viewers will deicide for semi-finals.

    Juries and Viewers for finals.

Rest of the world invited to vote online.

And they didn't get picked, bland middle of the road song that finishes bottom in the semi final again so!

Going to be the same presenters as Vidbir (Ukranian national selection)

National Final season starts today, so time to get the thread underway.

Will be hosted in Liverpool, England as Ukraine obviously aren't able to fulfil hosting duties.

37 countries will partake this year, which is the lowest since 2014. Bulgaria, Montenegro and North Macedonia have withdrawn, whilst Russia and Belarus are obviously still expelled.

    Semi-final 1: 9th May 2023

    Semi-final 2: 11th May 2023

    Final: 13th May 2023

As usual, this calendar from Eurovision World is a handy resource to have to follow National Final/song reveals throughout the season.

Here's to hoping for a less politically charged contest in 2023 😬

    Eurovision 2023.

A voting change underway for next year’s contest. The jury vote has been abolished for the SF’s, and the qualifiers will be decided by the televote only. The jury still has a 50/50 say in the final though.

    https://www.ebu.ch/news/2022/11/voting-changes-announced-for-eurovision-song-contest-2023

Apparently it’s being done as a result of some extremely unpopular songs qualifying from the SF’s, in particular Azerbaijan who somehow managed to make it to last year’s final despite getting zero in the televote. It also reduces the impact of jury vote-swapping which the aforementioned Azerbaijan greatly benefitted from.

There will also be a ‘rest of the world’ televote included this year (without a jury vote), which will consist of an online vote for non-participating countries. My guess is they’re testing the waters to potentially open up the contest to other countries outside of the EBU. Personally don’t like either of these changes, the current voting system is the best it’s ever been and doesn’t need to be changed as a result of exceedingly rare occurrences like Azerbaijan last year.

Interesting article about the Irish approach to next year.

Says our National Final will be a part of the Late Late as usual but the studio panel won’t be allowed to vote this time. They’ll also be encouraged to give their honest opinions after last year’s nonsense. Says RTE has received about 330 songs, which is currently being trimmed down. Michael Kealy is certainly saying all the right things, just remains to be seen whether we’ll end up with the same old shíte as always. In a year where Wild Youth and Cruachan have expressed an interest in taking part, I’ll be very disappointed (but ultimately unsurprised) if we end up with the usual cast of either reality tv rejects or people connected to RTE.

Ukraine will get National Final season underway tonight with Jerry Heil’s war-themed ‘When God Shut the Door’ the favourite to be picked. I suppose it begs the question of do Ukraine have this in the bag before a single song has even been picked? No doubt public sympathy isn't quite as high as it was back in May, and will probably be smaller again next May, but there's now a huge Ukrainian population spread all throughout Europe, so it's possible they'll top the televote with ease again. I struggle to see how they won’t get at least 250/300 points in the televote. Is another Ukrainian win inevitable?

I'm voting for India regardless they do all the heavy shovelling when it comes to the the tele communications part of the whole thing if ya know what I mean like

    Ukraine

Surprised they picked this. It's two minutes and forty seconds of.. nothing really. Ukraine always sell the hell out of their entries though, so it'll look and sound a lot better in Liverpool. Surely this isn't winning though... right?!

Not sure I get the appeal of that one either...

This one is a lot more interesting!

    Donna Mccaul from Eurovision 2005.

Just watched it back in full - really good (don’t know if you have a ‘Catch-Up’ option for the BBC in Ireland)!

Subwoolfer being joined onstage by Alexander Rybak, plus two from Johnny Logan (guess which songs)! :D

A lot of rumours online about who has been selected for the Irish final on the late late.

Wild youth (they seem to kinda be confirming it on Twitter...I am surprised they would want to be in a competition tbh..we have selected no name acts automatically in the past)

Surely a bit of a a shoo in with a decent song as they have a fan base...

Oh and bizarrely Public Image limited....

What's the story about getting tickets for the main event. Online it just says keep an eye on social media. Anyone know anything different or when they usually went on sale for other ones?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

One of the rumoured songs for Irish final...it's not half bad either!

Snippet of another (again just a rumour)..bit more generic but solid too

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,558 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

It varies every year, much of it depends on the floor plan of the arena and when the staging/green room/camera placements have been decided.

    Previous years:

    • Eurovision 2022: 7 April 2022
    • Eurovision 2021: No public sale
    • Eurovision 2020: 12 December 2019
    • Eurovision 2019: 18 February 2019
    • Eurovision 2018: 30 November 2017
    • Eurovision 2017: 14 February 2017
    • Eurovision 2016: 26 November 2015
    • Eurovision 2015: 15 December 2014
    • Eurovision 2014: 29 November 2013
    • Eurovision 2013: 26 November 2012

So keeping an eye on social media, the Eurovision fan sites and signing up to Eurovision email updates are really the only way to go!

    Albania

The second song picked this year, just before Christmas.

More of the same from Albania. I just can't see who'd pick up the phone and vote for this? Might qualify and finish bottom right hand side of the board, but that's it.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,558 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

There's also a snippet of Down In The Rain on YouTube, but the full song is on Spotify

Just sounds like a generic rap song you'd see on pretty much any Spotify playlist to be honest.

I think the Adgy song is the best of the potential entries released so far. That's if the above list is true of course, we see a lot of false rumours posted online every Eurovision season, but they were correct about the Norwegian songs so seems reasonably trustworthy.

Thank you appreciate your help...I'll carry on being patient then so!

Seems like Wild Youth are definitely one of the contenders then so. It seems the songs are being unveiled on Ryan Tubridys show throughout this week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Little snippets on Tubridy show now.

They are all equal...except the one he saving for the end....

ADGY first up - confirmed as same snippet I posted earlier.

CONNOLLY - midnight summer night (I really like this one)

K-muni and ND - not my thing (not song title lol)

    Leila Jane.

    Wild youth confirmed!

So the last act...public image limited..

    Well that is certainly eclectic

I like the CONNOLLY track but it might be a bit too mellow to grab the votes in the Eurovision circus.

"To follow knowledge like a sinking star..." (Tennyson's Ulysses)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

I don't think so tbh. We should be picking the best song regardless of genre. Plenty of slow/mellow songs do well just look at Portugal.

I think we have partially done so poorly recently by going for the most "Eurovision y" song we can get. The Wild Youth song is definitely in that category, swedish songwriters, pop, I am pretty sure we are one was literally a recent Eurovision slogan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

I quite like the Leila Jane song a bit like something Gabrielle Aplin would release...but is it also maybe a bit dare I say it Leslie Roy...shudder

Pil are amazing but that’s not a good example

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,990 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

    Thanks for all the links.

I'd be sending Wild Youth, but of course a lot depends on how well the song translates to live performance.

So disappointed with Wild Youth song. A generic unity song written by the same guy who wrote 'Dying to try'. We tried a similar formula in 2016 with Nicky Byrne and flopped terribly.

For me it is either Adgy or Connolly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,592 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

They're all a bit generic Eurovision, the kind of thing they've moved away from in recent years in favour of actual good music. RTE might get the memo in 25-30 years.

I'm sure PIL is worthy and all...,but scalded cat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Marty Whelan on the radio now saying all 6 songs would make the final....delusional

I love the CONNOLLY song too, plus bare in mind that seems to be a demo version so final version should be pretty different.

Wild youth song is a disappointment it sounds a bit like where the streets have no name as well...

We'll have his inevitable meltdown to look forward to at 9:57PM on the evening of the semi final then.

The Wild Youth song is like one of those crap official World Cup songs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,592 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

Might as well send Johnny Rotten for the craic. None of the rest of them will do anything anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,648 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Wild Youth sounds the one that is 'written for Eurovision' - rather bland and generic.

The others sound like they could exist outside of Eurovision at least. I don't think Wild Youth are hot favourites either, as some seem to think. They've gone off the boil and haven't had a hit in a few years....their supposed fanbase may be totally overstated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,029 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

Even at this early stage I'd happily bet a significant amount of cash on the exact opposite

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 732 ✭✭✭weadick

  • The deal clincher will be John Lydons performance on the night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,462 ✭✭✭✭WoollyRedHat

Wild Youth entry is so bland and generic, hope they don't get voted through.

Connolly and Leila Jane are best artistically, PIL entry decent enough.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,051 Mod ✭✭✭✭Say Your Number

That Leila Jane song is a bit formulaic, but pleasant enough, could have a decent chance qualifying before finishing 22nd in the final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 174 ✭✭delboy85

Have just listened to the songs.

A big improvement overall from last years offerings.

I think CONNOLLY is my favourite and the most interesting at this early stage but some of the others are decent too.

The Wild Youth song sounds very generic and dated. It sounds like an X-Factor winners song from 15 years ago. It will probably be selected.
