I take your point but I did say 'strengthen up'. A few of them could do with some bulk aswell. I'm not looking for a Sean Finn type physique, he's genetically top % and he's had all that s&c. Hannon is slight enough allright..kind of wiry and I guess Blanchfield is the same. He's a good prospect.

Timmy Clifford came on wearing number 15.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,747 ✭✭✭brookville

    Correct

Brassil had a slight injury. Wally and billy ryan were replaced by mikey butler and landy

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,037 ✭✭✭tbiggertycome

Timmy Clifford wore 15 instead of Brassil and came on with 15-20mins or so to go. He played midfield and got a point i think.

Good run out yesterday good to see so many new faces definetly a lot more short passing a bit over done at times but nice to see us doing different things

Although Buckley did some nice things and looked sharp I think once the ground firms up he ll get caught for legs

Thought the puck outs were a lot faster and a better trajectory on most of them less balls coming down with snow on them

Does anyone know is Gerry Fitz back working with kk again this year or is he with Offaly ?

Buckley hasnt hurl well in 4/5 years and in his 30s now. He wont be on the team

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,354 ✭✭✭Village87

Deegan was poor in last years final, very poor v Cork in the semi final the year before, Stephen Bennett destroyed him v Waterford the covid year. Eoin Larkin came out giving out about Cody for not whipping him at HT. He was cleaned by Gillane in the QF in Thurles, I think it was 2019. I think Gillane missed 4 goal chances due to great saves from Eoin Murphy and Gillane dropping the hurl

every team needs a few water carriers

  • Registered Users Posts: 131 ✭✭jamesbond2022

I agree 100% his hurling brain is still better than alot of players but his body just won’t allow him to get around the field and do things that are needed at the very top level anymore

There’s a county boards meeting tonight but I’m fairly sure that they are going to be the same as last year but could be wrong on that and should know more later

  • Registered Users Posts: 479 ✭✭Neewollah

Age grades will be same as last year with potential change back to the norm in 2024

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,354 ✭✭✭Village87

Sooner the better, Current set up is a joke. Clubs losing so many young hurlers

  • Registered Users Posts: 479 ✭✭Neewollah

In a perfect world it should be this year but seems that GAA top brass love the current set up and are trying to find a way of keeping it in someway shape or form so buying themselves some time

Yeah they’re staying at the current age groups and will be staying unless it changes at congress. They’re bring forward a motion to congress to change it back to U-14/U-16/U-18

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,354 ✭✭✭Village87

This needs to be brought in ASAP. GAA are asking lads at 17 years of age and in 5th year of school to step in a dressing room with men up to 10-15 and 20 years older than them. U18 competition was a great transition to adult hurling, keeps them hurling together for longer and that extra year is massive as they start socialising together etc at u18(still very young at 16/17).

Usually the u18s are in 5th year of school in there 1st year adult hurling and find the step up intimidating. The next year u19 they are usually doing the leaving cert, so that 2 years wasted really. Our club is losing a lot of hurlers and the players staying on are not developing

The torture he endured versus Limerick in 2018 quarter final should never have happened.

Having been torn asunder by Cathal Mannion for 6 points from play the previous week, Cody stubbornly stuck with him again at corner back just 7 days later. And both days, (predictably) Cody left Paddy Deegan on for the full 70 mins. Cody had a ruthless reputation but rarely subbed off backs, even if they were getting done. Limerick's great journey of the last 5 years may never have arrived!

Speaking of which, 13 of the current Limerick team featured in an AI qualifier loss to us in Nowlan Park in 2017, a really poor game. If you told me that team would win 4 of the following 5 All Irelands, I'd have laughed my head off. While Limerick have some outstanding born hurlers, their success has largely been built off the field. Brilliant set up, brilliant coaching.

Thanks for that. Did they announce the new Performance Manager?

  • Registered Users Posts: 479 ✭✭Neewollah

Don't think so. Pado Flynn is new coaching officer

What happened the previous coaching officer?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,278 ✭✭✭JJs Left Hand

  • Registered Users Posts: 479 ✭✭Neewollah

Correct. But their will be an external chair for the coaching committee and that performance manager role or whatever the official title is that will be above him in the pecking order. I'd imagine that is the reason Muldowney walked.

Both the above were recommendations from Mick Dempseys report.

    Sound.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,037 ✭✭✭tbiggertycome

From what I've heard from someone who interviewed for the position they might actually be splitting the role with one focused on coaching and one focused on the S&C side of things. Hopefully they managed to secure the best candidates as this is a vital role for Kilkenny going forward.

Disastrous for many 17 year olds. There of course will be many that will transition easily but for many they won't and unfortunately will be forgotten in a few years when they can't cope with the demands of adult hurling and stray away from the game. Not good enough really.

  • Registered Users Posts: 479 ✭✭Neewollah

If that's true sounds like they may be trying to sort out 2 people with a job instead of actually employing 1 person capable of covering all angles as originally planned. Be interesting to see who get these roles

did anyone get the Kilkenny league hurling fixtures for 2023 by any chance?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,733 ✭✭✭Grats

All the fixtures, league and championship, are on the Kilkenny GAA website.

I bumped into Kieran in town one day before Christmas. I don't know him all that well. My young lad is on the squads so I've only met him a few times. We were chatting for a few minutes. I asked him how he was getting on in the job and he told me he wasn't going forward for next year. I asked him why and he threw his eyes up to heaven and said "How long have you?" He said he really liked the role. 2021 was a disaster with Covid but he felt they were making some decent progress with the U14s and the new U13 Academy. He had what sounded like some really good plans in place for this year especially for helping the club coach and for football but he felt he was always treated like an outsider by the head lads. He was disappointed that the new committee took away the election of the Coaching Officer from the clubs and it is now an appointment. Reading between the line I think this was done to make sure that the head boys always had "their man" in place and could control and direct him. When you look at the make up of that committee (Pat Tynan friends and colleagues plus Brian Cody/Ned Quinn disciples), it's no surprise. They were obviously feeling threatened by an "outsider" and wanted to get control back. I could sense the disappointment in his voice. He actually got a bit emotional that he couldn't continue in the role. It's a pity as he seemed like a decent fellow who was working hard.

Hopefully, the new structure will work. We badly need it.
