    3. 2:3x:xx for marathon (2:44:27)
    4. Do a couple of trail races. I'd like to run the WW Relay again.
    5. Try some shorter stuff, maybe even some track.

  • Registered Users Posts: 62 ✭✭kd82

    Sure why not -

    1. Still enjoy running by end of year, Juggling with other sports
    2. Sub 30min 5 mile (31:37)
    3. Sub 64min 10 mile (64:19)
    4. Sub 1:24 HM (1:24:57)
    5. Break 5k PB (17:55)
    6. Sub 38 10k (38:01)

2-4 are targets for the next couple of months then hopefully 5,6 over the summer at some point. Not sure if i'll manage another crack at first three distances later in the year.

Want to PB at 5k, 5 mile, 10k, 10 mile, Half marathon, and Marathon. (Who doesn't?)

    Ambitious but achievable I feel.

    Current:

    5k - 19:37 - 2022

    5m - 33:44 - 2020

    10k - 43:01 - 2020 (TT)

    10m - 1:16:15 - 2018

    Half - 1:33:44 - 2022

    Marathon - 3:26:23 - 2022

The 10 mile is low hanging fruit, I ran around 1:09 ish for it during that half pb.

Raheny 5 is up next but am only back at it after an 8 day break with sickness. Should pull things together in time to shave off that. Fingers crossed.

The 5k is the only one where I feel I left nothing out there, but *should* be beatable, didn't specifically target it for that pb and plan to this time.

Did leave things out there for the half and the full, was too strong at the end of the half, and made pace mistakes in the full. Learned from them I hope.

The 10k should be doable. Have gained quite a bit since my last attempt.

Nothing motivates better than putting this stuff in ink 😁

    Sub 150 half ( pb 151:25)

    Sub 23:30 5k ( pb 23:45)

Sub 4 marathon ( although not sure if will actually do one yet )

    Race more

A copy and paste from 2022. To add to this i just hope to be consistent with running . I want to try and change my mind set and break through self inflicted barriers .( I have had 5:00 mink so long in my head as 10k pace etc )

Been a few years since I set my goals/targets on here.

I don't plan or envisage getting a new pb in 5km (25:40) or 10k (53:21). Got both of those pb's in 2022 and really wasn't expecting them. And not feeling like I will get near them this year but we shall see as the racing season progresses.

5 mile - not sure what my pb is, ran last year's longer course in 48 mins so aiming for sub 45mins at the end of the month.

    10 mile - get nearer to 1:30 (pb 1:36)

Half marathon - a close as possible to 2:05 (pb 2:08)

Marathon - my first marathon - not sure what time to aim for yet, sub 5, around 4:45, sub 4:45, complete it!

Run 1,000 miles the year. I track in kms so 1,610kms. Did 1,228kms last year but thinking the marathon training will bring my mileage up this year.

    Arbitrary distance goal: 3,220Km/2,000 miles

These are the distances I will be racing in 2023. Consistency in training and discipline in races will hopefully see me achieve these. Fingers crossed for an injury/illness free year.

Distance - Current PB (year ran) - 2023 Goal

    5Km - 22:31 (2022) - <22mins - Likely to have a few cracks at this at parkruns/5Km races.

10Km - 51:14 (2019) - <47mins - race coming up in early February which will hopefully get the year off to a good start

10 mile - 1:24:39 (2019) - <1:17 - Mid April for this. If I can hit this target then the following races should go to plan.

1/2 marathon - 1:44:54 (2022) - <1:42 - I think I'm closer to this than my recent PB. Smarter race execution should see me get there. Not doing it until June so hopefully have some good training behind me by then.

Marathon - 4:24:08 (2022) - 3:40-3:59 - My 1/2 PB suggests the sub 4 is possible. We will see how the marathon training block and race execution goes. Chicago bound for this so I am hoping travel won't be an issue with getting a PB.

  • Registered Users Posts: 122 ✭✭Dublinlad1989

    Putting this up for accountability!

Have a number of PB's I set in 2020 before I stopped running and the goal is to beat them or get as close to them as possible.

    5k - Under 22 mins (PB 23 mins )

10k - Under 50 Mins (PB 52 mins but this was the first ever race i did)

    5 Mile - 38 Mins (PB 39 mins)

    10 Mile - 1:23 mins (PB 1:24)

    HM - Sub 1:50 (PB 1:50.06)

Marathon - Sub 4 Hours (PB 4:34 2022, training went to hell due to sickness 3 weeks our from DM)

Also want to run 1000 miles for the year, I only started running again last July and hit 700km so with a solid plan (and injury/sickness free) this can easily be achieved

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89 ✭✭longrunn

Just focused on a sub-3hr marathon. I did my first marathon last year and I think that I peaked in training too early. If I had raced at my peak I think I could have done sub 3:10 but I had a few injuries as the race approached and the last 6 weeks of my training were very disrupted. Still hit 3:24, though I was glad to just have made it to the starting line.

If I manage to stay relatively injury free I think I could hit sub-3 by the end of the year. If I don't, I'll still be satisfied to get sub-3:10.

Not too concerned with other distance PBs but along the way this year I'll be doing some races and if I get some PBs I'll be quite happy. I think something along these lines:

    distance | current | goal

    1m | 5:57 | 5:30

    5k | 19:56 | sub-18

    10k | 42:16 | sub-40

    10m | 70:58 | sub-65

    HM | 89:48 | sub-85

    M | 3:24 | sub-3

Of course, all that depends on if I can keep up the appropriate level of training without getting injured...

  • Registered Users Posts: 493 ✭✭Butterbeans

Not done one of these in a while. The last 18 months were a bit of a write-off running wise, with health issues, injury, and family life all contributing. I ran 1,200km less in 2022 than 2021. Green shoots towards the end of last year with my fastest 5k in 2 years.

Hope to break some pbs this year with main aim being 5k and 10k, maybe 10mile, but main aim for first six months is to get a solid base and build up the mileage again.

    5k - 19.55 (2018)

    10k - 42.41 (2018)

    10mile - 1.14.31 (2019)

    HM - 1.37.47 (2019)

    Marathon - 3.57.14 (2020)

Before I get down to my thoughts I would like to wish everyone the best with their goals this year, may the running gods live in your shoes(or toenails if your a mad barefoot runner). The more happy people the better

So- an enforced layoff has set me back a few weeks but also given me time to consider 2023. Lets start with the fvck it why not wish list

    • Marathon - sub 3.10 first half of the year(Boston) - Then a crack at sub 3.00 second half (most likely Valencia 3 days after my 50th birthday)

    Realistically

    • Marathon PB -currently 3.17 (3.10 is my target)
    • 5k (PB) - Current - Parkrun 19.17 and watch 19.42 both 2022 - no race (sub 19 is my target)
    • 10k (PB) 41.05 Fingal 10k 2022 (sub 40 is my target)
    • 10 Mile (PB) - Watch during halt TT 1.09 (sub 1.06 is my target)
    • Half (PB) - TT 1.31 (sub 1.28 is my target)

I reckon any three the above would be a phenomenal year

    🏃🤞

    • 2 more cross country races (2 done already)
    • 10 mile PB (current 70:44)
    • Marathon PB in Berlin (3:19:28)
    • 3,500 kms
    • Beat @Lazare in any race. 😉

    @Lazare is the new @ThebitterLemon 😂

haha, fancy some friendly best of three type thing? 3x races (chip time), loser gives €50 to charity of winner's choice.

Sure why not, we can compare calendars for rounds 2 and 3 (if necessary) after Raheny. 😁

Will this be a simple head to head or based on cumulative times to make sure you run to the line even if you're beaten?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,443 ✭✭✭Lazare

Ah a simple head to head. It got me thinking that it could be a fun thing for others to do. Just stuck a thread up to gauge interest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,721 ✭✭✭MisterDrak

A bit of cut and paste but still stands... I do this most years and then forget about it until mid-year. I find it nice to come back as see when the running mindset was back in Jan and what can be crossed off... Most of my goals are Time related but that's what keeps me ticking :)

    1. A few sub 19:45 min 5K's, which is getting harder and harder the older I get.
    2. Run in the National Road Relays. This is not about time, but in a team and the F***ing nerves on the days and hours before...
    3. Sub 12 2 mile.
    4. A sub 33:30 5 mile. Raheny 5, and if I miss it then Dunboyne (if its still on ?)
    5. Sub 67 10 mile. Kilbeggan ? Race series ? Trim is to early for that pace ?
    6. Top 3 M50 in Sligo Point to Point 10 miler.
    7. Sub 1:30 Half. Fairyhouse, Race series ?
    8. Run Dublin Marathon. Still going to put down sub 3:20, as last year as a shambles for last 3 miles, where the 3:20 was still on before mile 23.

Generally, keep running strongly (give my age), and have the banter with the lads after the sessions / logs runs that have been a stalwart during the year.

Post a bit more on here...

  • Registered Users Posts: 361 ✭✭babacool

    Goals. Hmmm. 🤔

    1. Stay injury free. Second half of 2022 been an experience i don’t need to have again!
    2. win at least 1 Race (parkrun does not count) over any distance
    3. don’t care much for PBs. If it happens it happens. The only that I need though (to have a Good Base for Next year) is the half. Would like to go sub 72 this year (current 75min).
    4. finish the year without running a marathon.
    5. complete 5000km this year
    6. biggest goal of them all (even more than staying injury free): still enjoy running by the end of the year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,757 ✭✭✭masterK

    Overall Mileage: Break 2000km

    5k - PB 21:17 - Aim < 21

    10k - PB 46:15 - Aim < 45

    5 Mile - Never Ran - Aim < 36

    10 Mile - Never Ran - Aim < 1:18

    HM - PB - 1:43:01 - Aim < 1:42

Marathon - PB 4:16:59 - Aim < 4:00 - Only one was Dublin last year which didn't quite go to plan.

I'd be running on and off for years but generally just 5k's once a twice a week, in 2022 I got a lot more serious and did my first HM and Marathon, therefore I'd be confident I can beat all my PBs this year.

Raheny 5, 33:11 so that one is off the list and its only Jan. Time was a bit soft anyway...

  • Registered Users Posts: 50 ✭✭Los Cafeteros

Mix of time and non-time related goals for me:

    PB hunting:

    • Sub-6 min mile
    • Sub-20 min parkrun/ ?sub 19:30 5k in a race(PB- 19:46 from docklands 5k last year)
    • Sub 1’35 min HM

Finish DCM- struck down with illness prior to this in 22 and was DNF on day. Aiming to enjoy the training more this year, focus on recovery and make the startline healthy.

Do a trail race- have signed up for the Ecotrail 30k. Hopefully the ankles hold up prior to DCM

Do a Progression parkrun(Oct 23) and do Bushy Parkrun when in London over the summer

Do a race with friends who've been getting into running last few months- convincneced them to sign up for the Limerick HM

I've been running on and off for years. Decided this year to take it a bit more seriously and do a half marathon or two. I'll be doing the Wicklow half marathon next month and I'm aiming to do it in under 2 hours. Does any one know what it is like. Seems like quite a bit of it is uphill.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

To race again. Just one race, any race. 😫

  • Registered Users Posts: 361 ✭✭babacool

It’s a lovely race. Did it twice. Main thing is to keep it easy first half. Especially first few k. Dont think “this isnt too bad” and run too fast/hard.

As you can see, first 2-3k are basically flat and misleading. 10k in the toughest part is done. Now you can start enjoying it. That last climb has the most beautiful scenery you can imagine (if I remember correctly).

and the finish hill is a little climb of honour with usually a massive crowd.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 35,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭AlmightyCushion

Thanks for that. Yeah that first 10k looks rough alright. I'm trying to get some hill runs in to help build my legs up but I live in the city centre which is pretty flat. I've started doing the Khyber pass in phoenix park which helps but could do with something steeper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,250 ✭✭✭witnessmenow

Run the half marathon I've signed up for (Kilkee)

Seeing as the longest I've run is 8k, 9 years ago, I've a bit of work to do!

  • Registered Users Posts: 493 ✭✭Butterbeans

Great stuff. What kind of distances are you running at present?

Plenty of time til July. It'd be good for you to get a good base now, build up the mileage slowly over the next couple of months and look at a plan then in April/May to take you up to the race.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,250 ✭✭✭witnessmenow

I ran 6k on Saturday, this is my longest run in about 8 or 9 years (i basically didn't run in the mean time til last June), so I have plenty of ground to make up, but I'm determined to get it done. I'm currently runnings 3 days a week, so I have two 5ks done already this week, will do at least 6k again on Saturday. Pace is very slow (~7 per Km) but I'm not too worried about that side of things for now!

  • Registered Users Posts: 493 ✭✭Butterbeans

Very good. And you're dead on, I wouldn't worry at all about pace for now, running easy is what you should be doing and if it feels hard, dont be afraid to slow down further.

Stick at the 3 days for now with your two 5ks and a longer run...you could increase the longer run by 1km per week (and some weeks repeat the previous weeks distances-with no increase).

Once you're feeling more comfortable you can increase one of your midweek runs and/or add another run in, all gradual.

Once you start a plan for the HM you can look at what pace you might be able for, most plans will have some paced runs and speed work built in.

  • Registered Users Posts: 361 ✭✭babacool

Jog out to howth. That 10k loop will be the perfect training for Wicklow.

only found this page recently, new to running since September of last year and i could barely manage running 3km, very unfit and extremely overweight, 5km target 20-21mins, 10km target under 50mins by years end. 5km best achieved end of Jan this year @ 23:30 10km 54:50.

Dont have a running background but have played numerous sports up to my 40s, age mid 40s now and still carrying 10kg from where ideally i would like to be.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 35,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭AlmightyCushion

What I found is doing longer runs helped me be faster in my shorter runs. Try working your way up to 15km and your 5k and 10k times should improve quite a bit. Also, losing that 10kg will definitely help your speed massively. I've been an on and off runner for years. Whenever I would start back again I would also start off more or less the same speed and distance and followed a similar trajectory of increasing those over time for the first few months (obviously volume of mileage affected it too). Then I lost about 10kg. Once I started back running after that it was a different story. I started off being able to run a bit longer and a bit faster and I felt better doing it. Not only that but I improved much, much quicker. I expected an improvement but not that much. It was very suprising.

Best of luck with the progress and losing the weight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,518 ✭✭✭basillarkin

thanks, on average run 4 times a week, an easy, an interval, a recovery and i do between 12km and 15km long run once a week at abot 6:20 per km pace now, i have started doing strides/sprints aswell of 200/250m on my easy day now aswell. Hopefully on the right track.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,664 ✭✭✭dirkmeister

Have made huge strides with consistency since late December.

Averaging about 50km per week at the moment.

I signed up to a marathon last November but we have a baby due next month so I’m not sure if that target will be met.

So far this year I’ve knocked my 5k PB down to 21:49 so I’m hoping to keep chipping away at that before the year’s end.

I have a 10k race coming up next week and at the moment my PB for that distance is 49:10. I hope to crack into the low 48s.

Another goal is to avoid injury.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,721 ✭✭✭MisterDrak

Brief (and delayed Update). Ran 33:10 in the Raheny 5. That target was probably a bit (lot ) soft anyway, so strike one that off.

A couple of 20:10's in StAnnes parkrun, so that one is still out there, but pretty confident that maybe a trip out to Popintree in May with a few of the fast lads will see a 19:30-40.

Bohermeen coming up Sunday, but I cant see any way of getting sub 1:30 there, to early in the year, and a tough course anyway, maybe 1:34 ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 699 ✭✭✭DangerMouse27

Great 👍 idea. Motivational posting. Will really enjoy watching all of these goals coming in and the determination to reach them.

Quarter-Miler 42 year old who should know better at this stage 😜

Working full time and with a little baby but I'm determined.

    1. 100m, sub 12.

    2. 200m, sub 25.

    3. 400m, sub 54**

    4. 600m. Sub 1.30

** If I run sub 54, I'm going to enter Euro Masters Athletics Championships in Italy in September.

Able to train about 4 times a week, and do home weights with a nice little squat rack set up.

    Going well so far.

Ran 32:54 at Raheny for a 50 sec pb.

Ran Bohermeen this morning in 1:29:37 for a 4min 7 sec improvement.

Had a crack at the sub 90 and it worked out.

Broke that 10k time today too which was nice.

    • Sub 15:30 5k (currently 16:05)
    • Sub 75 Half (77:30)
    • Sub 3h marathon (3:03)
    • Attempt 2:4X marathon(only once the previous goal has been safely achieved...)
    • Below my age (34) for 10k(got this one in February)
    • And a more abstract goal is to try and put a bit of structure to my training. I've only been meeting the overall mileage targets for the last few months and not doing anything specific, bar one night a week on the track with my club.

I had a 10k race this morning and managed to finish in a time of 45:51.

Very happy with that considering it was a tough course with an absolute b*stard of a hill that seemed to go on forever.

Seeing the progress really does give great confidence.

Ran my first ever offical race today, a tough 8km with a hard hill halfway through, delighted to have broken the 40mins, came in at 39:50.

So after not running since Wednesday I had my long run early this morning and decided to go a bit faster than normal, ended up running the longest i have ever ran while also getting to half marathon distance in a time of 1hr 59mins, training is going well overall and delighted with the distance achieved this morning.

Managed to cross of 2. in Dunboyne earlier with a 34:17. Will hopefully have a good crack at 1. over the next couple of months although the sub 16 is a much more daunting target.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,443 ✭✭✭Lazare

Incredible, well done. I was checking out a friend's result earlier and it looks like you and him had a duke out to the line. He ran 34:16

@Lazare Yeah, he passed me on the final lap of the track. I was dying a horrible death at thay stage, felt like I was running in sand. We'd been in a group most of the way around that splintered in the last couple of kms. Red and yellow vest I think? Strong runner.
